On the importance of testing gravity at distances less than 1cm
If the mechanism responsible for the smallness of the vacuum energy is
consistent with local quantum field theory, general arguments suggest the
existence of at least one unobserved scalar particle with Compton wavelength
bounded from below by one tenth of a millimeter. We show that this bound is
saturated if vacuum energy is a substantial component of the energy density of
the universe. Therefore, the success of cosmological models with a significant
vacuum energy component suggests the existence of new macroscopic forces with
range in the sub-millimeter region. There are virtually no experimental
constraints on the existence of quanta with this range of interaction.Comment: 9 pages TeX, 2 eps figures, uses mtexsis.tex and epsf.tex. Entry in

Gravitational Radiation from Preheating with Many Fields
Parametric resonances provide a mechanism by which particles can be created
just after inflation. Thus far, attention has focused on a single or many
inflaton fields coupled to a single scalar field. However, generically we
expect the inflaton to couple to many other relativistic degrees of freedom
present in the early universe. Using simulations in an expanding
Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker spacetime, in this paper we show how
preheating is affected by the addition of multiple fields coupled to the
inflaton. We focus our attention on gravitational wave production--an important
potential observational signature of the preheating stage. We find that
preheating and its gravitational wave signature is robust to the coupling of
the inflaton to more matter fields.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, v2 submission version, thank you for comments

Clinically significant chronic liver disease in people with type 2 diabetes: the Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study
Background: Type 2 diabetes is an independent risk factor for chronic liver disease, however disease burden estimates and knowledge of prognostic indicators are lacking in community populations.
Aims: To describe the prevalence and incidence of clinically significant chronic liver disease amongst community-based older people with Type 2 diabetes and to determine risk factors which might assist in discriminating patients with unknown prevalent or incident disease.
Design: Prospective cohort study.
Methods: Nine hundred and thirty-nine participants in the Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study underwent investigation including liver ultrasound and non-invasive measures of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), hepatic fibrosis and systemic inflammation. Over 6-years, cases of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma were collated from multiple sources.
Results: Eight patients had known prevalent disease with 13 further unknown cases identified (prevalence 2.2%) and 15 incident cases (IR 2.9/1000 person-years). Higher levels of systemic inflammation, NASH and hepatic fibrosis markers were associated with both unknown prevalent and incident clinically significant chronic liver disease (all Pâ<â0.001).
Conclusions: Our study investigations increased the known prevalence of clinically significant chronic liver disease by over 150%, confirming the suspicion of a large burden of undiagnosed disease. The disease incidence rate was lower than anticipated but still much higher than the general population rate. The ability to identify patients both with and at risk of developing clinically significant chronic liver disease allows for early intervention and clinical monitoring strategies. Ongoing work, with longer follow-up, including analysis of rates of liver function decline, will be used to define optimal risk prediction tools
Pathways into services for offenders with intellectual disabilities : childhood experience, diagnostic information and offence variables
The patterns and pathways into intellectual disability (ID) offender services were studied through case file review for 477 participants referred in one calendar year to community generic, community forensic, and low, medium, and maximum secure services. Data were gathered on referral source, demographic information, index behavior, prior problem behaviors, diagnostic information, and abuse or deprivation. Community referrers tended to refer to community services and secure service referrers to secure services. Physical and verbal violence were the most frequent index behaviors, whereas contact sexual offenses were more prominent in maximum security. Age at first incident varied with security, with the youngest in maximum secure services. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or conduct disorder was the most frequently recorded diagnosis, and severe deprivation was the most frequent adverse developmental experience. Fire starting, theft, and road traffic offenses did not feature prominently. Generic community services accepted a number of referrals with forensic-type behavior and had higher proportions of both women and people with moderate or severe ID
The use of synchrotron edge topography to study polytype nearest neighbour relationships in SiC
A brief review of the phenomenon of polytypism is presented and its prolific abundance in Silicon Carbide discussed. An attempt has been made to emphasise modern developments in understanding this unique behaviour. The properties of Synchrotron Radiation are shown to be ideally suited to studies of polytypes in various materials and in particular the coalescence of polytypes in SiC. It is shown that with complex multipolytypic crystals the technique of edge topography allows the spatial extent of disorder to be determined and, from the superposition of Laue type reflections, neighbourhood relationships between polytypes can be deduced. Finer features have now been observed with the advent of second generation synchrotrons, the resolution available enabling the regions between adjoining polytypes to be examined more closely. It is shown that Long Period Polytypes and One Dimensionally Disordered layers often found in association with regions of high defect density are common features at polytype boundaries. An idealised configuration termed a "polytype sandwich" is presented as a model for the structure of SiC grown by the modified Lely technique. The frequency of common sandwich edge profiles are classified and some general trends of polytype neighbourism are summarised
A closer look at the uncertainty relation of position and momentum
We consider particles prepared by the von Neumann-L\"uders projection. For
those particles the standard deviation of the momentum is discussed. We show
that infinite standard deviations are not exceptions but rather typical. A
necessary and sufficient condition for finite standard deviations is given.
Finally, a new uncertainty relation is derived and it is shown that the latter
cannot be improved.Comment: 3 pages, introduction shortened, content unchange
An Experimental Investigation of Colonel Blotto Games
"This article examines behavior in the two-player, constant-sum Colonel Blotto game with asymmetric resources in which players maximize the expected number of battlefields won. The experimental results support all major theoretical predictions. In the auction treatment, where winning a battlefield is deterministic, disadvantaged players use a 'guerilla warfare' strategy which stochastically allocates zero resources to a subset of battlefields. Advantaged players employ a 'stochastic complete coverage' strategy, allocating random, but positive, resource levels across the battlefields. In the lottery treatment, where winning a battlefield is probabilistic, both players divide their resources equally across all battlefields." Electron-electron interactions and two-dimensional - two-dimensional tunneling
We derive and evaluate expressions for the dc tunneling conductance between
interacting two-dimensional electron systems at non-zero temperature. The
possibility of using the dependence of the tunneling conductance on voltage and
temperature to determine the temperature-dependent electron-electron scattering
rate at the Fermi energy is discussed. The finite electronic lifetime produced
by electron-electron interactions is calculated as a function of temperature
for quasiparticles near the Fermi circle. Vertex corrections to the random
phase approximation substantially increase the electronic scattering rate. Our
results are in an excellent quantitative agreement with experiment.Comment: Revtex style, 21 pages and 8 postscript figures in a separate file;

Coherent Radio Pulses From GEANT Generated Electromagnetic Showers In Ice
Radio Cherenkov radiation is arguably the most efficient mechanism for
detecting showers from ultra-high energy particles of 1 PeV and above. Showers
occuring in Antarctic ice should be detectable at distances up to 1 km. We
report on electromagnetic shower development in ice using a GEANT Monte Carlo
simulation. We have studied energy deposition by shower particles and
determined shower parameters for several different media, finding agreement
with published results where available. We also report on radio pulse emission
from the charged particles in the shower, focusing on coherent emission at the
Cherenkov angle. Previous work has focused on frequencies in the 100 MHz to 1
GHz range. Surprisingly, we find that the coherence regime extends up to tens
of Ghz. This may have substantial impact on future radio-based neutrino
detection experiments as well as any test beam experiment which seeks to
measure coherent Cherenkov radiation from an electromagnetic shower. Our study
is particularly important for the RICE experiment at the South Pole.Comment: 44 pages, 29 figures. Minor changes made, reference added, accepted
