    Large Deformation Effects in the N = Z 44Ti Compound Nucleus

    The N = Z 44Ti* nucleus has been populated in Fusion Evaporation process at very high excitation energies and angular momenta using two entrance channels with different mass-asymmetry. The deformation effects in the rapidly rotating nuclei have been investigated through the energy distribution of the alpha-particle combined to statistical-model calculations. In the case of low-multiplicity events, the ratio between first particle emitted has been measured and shows significant disagreement with the predictions of the statistical-model.     Costs and Outcomes of Increasing Access to Bariatric Surgery: Cohort Study and Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Using Electronic Health Records

    Objectives: To estimate costs and outcomes of increasing access to bariatric surgery in obese adults and in population subgroups of age, sex, deprivation, comorbidity, and obesity category. Methods: A cohort study was conducted using primary care electronic health records, with linked hospital utilization data, for 3,045 participants who underwent bariatric surgery and 247,537 participants who did not undergo bariatric surgery. Epidemiological analyses informed a probabilistic Markov model to compare bariatric surgery, including equal proportions with adjustable gastric banding, gastric bypass, and sleeve gastrectomy, with standard nonsurgical management of obesity. Outcomes were quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) and net monetary benefits at a threshold of £30,000 per QALY. Results: In a UK population of 250,000 adults, there may be 7,163 people with morbid obesity including 1,406 with diabetes. The immediate cost of 1,000 bariatric surgical procedures is £9.16 million, with incremental discounted lifetime health care costs of £15.26 million (95% confidence interval £15.18–£15.36 million). Patient-years with diabetes mellitus will decrease by 8,320 (range 8,123–8,502). Incremental QALYs will increase by 2,142 (range 2,032–2,256). The estimated cost per QALY gained is £7,129 (range £6,775–£7,506). Net monetary benefits will be £49.02 million (range £45.72–£52.41 million). Estimates are similar for subgroups of age, sex, and deprivation. Bariatric surgery remains cost-effective if the procedure is twice as costly, or if intervention effect declines over time. Conclusions: Diverse obese individuals may benefit from bariatric surgery at acceptable cost. Bariatric surgery is not cost-saving, but increased health care costs are exceeded by health benefits to obese individuals

    New results on the superdeformed 196^{196}Bi nucleus a re reported. We have observed with the EUROBALL IV γ\gamma-ray spectrometer array a superdeformed trans ition of 124 keV which is the lowest observed energy γ\gamma-ray in any superdeformed nucleus. We have de velopped microscopic cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the SLy4 effective force and a realistic surface p airing which strongly support the Kπ=2K^\pi=2^-(π\pi[651]1/2ν\otimes \nu[752]5/2) assignment of this su perdeformed band

    A SOFTWARE DEFINED NETWORKING ARCHITECTURE FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE CLOUDS 1

    ABSTRACT-Multi-tenant clouds with resource virtualization offer elasticity of resources and elimination of initial cluster setup cost and time for applications. However, poor network performance, performance variation and noisy neighbors are some of the challenges for execution of high performance applications on public clouds. Utilizing these virtualized resources for scientific applications, which have complex communication patterns, require low latency communication mechanisms and a rich set of communication constructs. To minimize the virtualization overhead, a novel approach for low latency networking for HPC Clouds is proposed and implemented over a multi-technology software defined network. The efficiency of the proposed low-latency SDN is analyzed and evaluated for high performance applications. The results of the experiments show that the latest Mellanox FDR InfiniBand interconnect and Mellanox OpenStack plugin gives the best performance for implementing virtual machine based high performance clouds with large message sizes

    2-loop Functional Renormalization Group Theory of the Depinning Transition

    We construct the field theory which describes the universal properties of the quasi-static isotropic depinning transition for interfaces and elastic periodic systems at zero temperature, taking properly into account the non-analytic form of the dynamical action. This cures the inability of the 1-loop flow-equations to distinguish between statics and quasi-static depinning, and thus to account for the irreversibility of the latter. We prove two-loop renormalizability, obtain the 2-loop beta-function and show the generation of "irreversible" anomalous terms, originating from the non-analytic nature of the theory, which cause the statics and driven dynamics to differ at 2-loop order. We obtain the roughness exponent zeta and dynamical exponent z to order epsilon^2. This allows to test several previous conjectures made on the basis of the 1-loop result. First it demonstrates that random-field disorder does indeed attract all disorder of shorter range. It also shows that the conjecture zeta=epsilon/3 is incorrect, and allows to compute the violations, as zeta=epsilon/3 (1 + 0.14331 epsilon), epsilon=4-d. This solves a longstanding discrepancy with simulations. For long-range elasticity it yields zeta=epsilon/3 (1 + 0.39735 epsilon), epsilon=2-d (vs. the standard prediction zeta=1/3 for d=1), in reasonable agreement with the most recent simulations. The high value of zeta approximately 0.5 found in experiments both on the contact line depinning of liquid Helium and on slow crack fronts is discussed.Comment: 32 pages, 17 figures, revtex

    Towards demonstration of photonic payload for telecom satellites

    To address the challenges of the Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE) and also to remain in line with the evolution of terrestrial communications in a globally connected world, a major increase in telecoms satellites capacity is required in the near future. With telecom satellites payloads based on traditional RF equipment, increase in capacity and flexibility has always translated into a more or less linear increase in equipment count, mass, power consumption and power dissipation. The main challenge of next generation of High Throughput Satellites (HTS) is therefore to provide a ten-fold-increased capacity with enhanced flexibility while maintaining the overall satellite within a "launchable" volume and mass envelope [1], [2], [3]. Photonic is a very promising technology to overcome the above challenges. The ability of Photonic to handle high data rates and high frequencies, as well as enabling reduced size, mass, immunity to EMI and ease of harness routing (by using fibre-optic cables) is critical in this scenario

    PHIL photoinjector test line

    LAL is now equiped with its own platform for photoinjectors tests and Research and Developement, named PHIL (PHotoInjectors at LAL). This facility has two main purposes: push the limits of the photoinjectors performances working on both the design and the associated technology and provide a low energy (MeV) short pulses (ps) electron beam for the interested users. Another very important goal of this machine will be to provide an opportunity to form accelerator physics students, working in a high technology environment. To achieve this goal a test line was realised equipped with an RF source, magnets and beam diagnostics. In this article we will desrcibe the PHIL beamline and its characteristics together with the description of the first two photoinjector realised in LAL and tested: the ALPHAX and the PHIN RF Guns
