    A finite temperature model of strongly correlated nucleons with underlying isospin symmetries is developed. The model can be used to study the role of bound states and Feshbach resonances on the thermal properties of a spin 1/2, isospin 1/2 system of protons and neutrons by varying the proton fraction. An analysis of features associated with a universal thermodynamic limit or unitary limit is given. In the limit of very large scattering length, the effective range to quantum thermal wavelength appears as a limiting scale in an interaction energy and equation of state.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Electron scattering in isotonic chains as a probe of the proton shell structure of unstable nuclei

    Electron scattering on unstable nuclei is planned in future facilities of the GSI and RIKEN upgrades. Motivated by this fact, we study theoretical predictions for elastic electron scattering in the N=82, N=50, and N=14 isotonic chains from very proton-deficient to very proton-rich isotones. We compute the scattering observables by performing Dirac partial-wave calculations. The charge density of the nucleus is obtained with a covariant nuclear mean-field model that accounts for the low-energy electromagnetic structure of the nucleon. For the discussion of the dependence of scattering observables at low-momentum transfer on the gross properties of the charge density, we fit Helm model distributions to the self-consistent mean-field densities. We find that the changes shown by the electric charge form factor along each isotonic chain are strongly correlated with the underlying proton shell structure of the isotones. We conclude that elastic electron scattering experiments in isotones can provide valuable information about the filling order and occupation of the single-particle levels of protons.Comment: 13 pages; 19 figure

    The clock paradox in a static homogeneous gravitational field

    The gedanken experiment of the clock paradox is solved exactly using the general relativistic equations for a static homogeneous gravitational field. We demonstrate that the general and special relativistic clock paradox solutions are identical and in particular that they are identical for finite acceleration. Practical expressions are obtained for proper time and coordinate time by using the destination distance as the key observable parameter. This solution provides a formal demonstration of the identity between the special and general relativistic clock paradox with finite acceleration and where proper time is assumed to be the same in both formalisms. By solving the equations of motion for a freely falling clock in a static homogeneous field elapsed times are calculated for realistic journeys to the stars.Comment: Revision: Posted with the caption included with the figure

    Analysis of Dislocation Mechanism for Melting of Elements: Pressure Dependence

    In the framework of melting as a dislocation-mediated phase transition we derive an equation for the pressure dependence of the melting temperatures of the elements valid up to pressures of order their ambient bulk moduli. Melting curves are calculated for Al, Mg, Ni, Pb, the iron group (Fe, Ru, Os), the chromium group (Cr, Mo, W), the copper group (Cu, Ag, Au), noble gases (Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn), and six actinides (Am, Cm, Np, Pa, Th, U). These calculated melting curves are in good agreement with existing data. We also discuss the apparent equivalence of our melting relation and the Lindemann criterion, and the lack of the rigorous proof of their equivalence. We show that the would-be mathematical equivalence of both formulas must manifest itself in a new relation between the Gr\"{u}neisen constant, bulk and shear moduli, and the pressure derivative of the shear modulus.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 9 eps figure

    Strain dependence of bonding and hybridization across the metal-insulator transition of VO2

    Soft x-ray spectroscopy is used to investigate the strain dependence of the metal-insulator transition of VO2. Changes in the strength of the V 3d - O 2p hybridization are observed across the transition, and are linked to the structural distortion. Furthermore, although the V-V dimerization is well-described by dynamical mean-field theory, the V-O hybridization is found to have an unexpectedly strong dependence on strain that is not predicted by band theory, emphasizing the relevance of the O ion to the physics of VO2

    Bremsstrahlung in Alpha-Decay

    We present the first fully quantum mechanical calculation of photon radiation accompanying charged particle decay from a barrier resonance. The soft-photon limit agrees with the classical results, but differences appear at next-to-leading-order. Under the conditions of alpha-decay of heavy nuclei, the main contribution to the photon emission stems from Coulomb acceleration and may be computed analytically. We find only a small contribution from the tunneling wave function under the barrier.Comment: 12 pages, 2 Postscript figure
