    Objective. To determine the levels of the allergen DerPl, attnbutable to the house-dust mite (HDM) Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus.Design. A four-season study conducted during 1994/95, sampling mattresses and carpets in the main bedrooms of suburban homes.Setting. Thirty randomly selected homes in the Edenvale area, occupied by both black and white families living under similar socio-economic conditions in comparable environments.Results, All homes tested positive for the allergen, and in 20% HDM levels exceeded levels recognised as 'safe' in terms of respiratory allergy, i.e. 2 ug/g of dust. Once mites were established in a home, they remained for months thereafter. The considerable seasonal variation recorded in HDM levels could not readily be explained.Conclusion. The HDM is extremely sensitive to minimal variations in microclimate. Its year-round presence is of concern on the Highveld. Infestation levels below 2 JIg/g of dust, until recently considered the critical point for sensitisation, may be significant triggers of symptoms

    The role of orienting in vibrissal touch sensing

    Rodents, such as rats and mice, are strongly tactile animals who explore the environment with their long mobile facial whiskers, or macrovibrissae, and orient to explore objects further with their shorter, more densely packed, microvibrissae. Although whisker motion (whisking) has been extensively studied, less is known about how rodents orient their vibrissal system to investigate unexpected stimuli. We describe two studies that address this question. In the first we seek to characterize how adult rats orient toward unexpected macrovibrissal contacts with objects and examine the microvibrissal exploration behavior following such contacts. We show that rats orient to the nearest macrovibrissal contact on an unexpected object, progressively homing in on the nearest contact point on the object in each subsequent whisk. Following contact, rats “dab” against the object with their microvibrissae at an average rate of approximately 8 Hz, which suggests synchronization of microvibrissal dabbing with macrovibrissal motion, and an amplitude of 5 mm. In study two, we examine the role of orienting to tactile contacts in developing rat pups for maintaining aggregations (huddles). We show that young pups are able to orient to contacts with nearby conspecifics before their eyes open implying an important role for the macrovibrissae, which are present from birth, in maintaining contact with conspecifics. Overall, these data suggest that orienting to tactile cues, detected by the vibrissal system, plays a crucial role throughout the life of a rat

    Atomic Hydrogen Cleaning of Polarized GaAs Photocathodes

    Atomic hydrogen cleaning followed by heat cleaning at 450^\circC was used to prepare negative-electron-affinity GaAs photocathodes. When hydrogen ions were eliminated, quantum efficiencies of 15% were obtained for bulk GaAs cathodes, higher than the results obtained using conventional 600^\circC heat cleaning. The low-temperature cleaning technique was successfully applied to thin, strained GaAs cathodes used for producing highly polarized electrons. No depolarization was observed even when the optimum cleaning time of about 30 seconds was extended by a factor of 100

    Three-Dimensional Thermoluminescence Spectra and Their Application in the Study of Some Sedimentary Quartz

    The intensity of thermoluminescence emission is a function of both temperature and photon energy (or wavelength) and therefore lends itself to a three-dimensional (3-D) display, either in the form of an isometric plot or a contour diagram. The technique of 3-D thermoluminescence spectrometry is briefly reviewed and the advantages and applications are illustrated by reference to the spectral properties of samples of Australian sedimentary quartz drawn from the context of thermoluminescence dating. In this context, the temperature of emission, the photon energy and the ease with which the emission is bleachable by sunlight are of significance. It is suggested that, in one of the samples, the energy of the photon emitted from one of the luminescence centres depends on the temperature of emission

    TLR ligand-induced podosome disassembly in dendritic cells is ADAM17 dependent

    Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling induces a rapid reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton in cultured mouse dendritic cells (DC), leading to enhanced antigen endocytosis and a concomitant loss of filamentous actin–rich podosomes. We show that as podosomes are lost, TLR signaling induces prominent focal contacts and a transient reduction in DC migratory capacity in vitro. We further show that podosomes in mouse DC are foci of pronounced gelatinase activity, dependent on the enzyme membrane type I matrix metalloprotease (MT1-MMP), and that DC transiently lose the ability to degrade the extracellular matrix after TLR signaling. Surprisingly, MMP inhibitors block TLR signaling–induced podosome disassembly, although stimulated endocytosis is unaffected, which demonstrates that the two phenomena are not obligatorily coupled. Podosome disassembly caused by TLR signaling occurs normally in DC lacking MT1-MMP, and instead requires the tumor necrosis factor α–converting enzyme ADAM17 (a disintegrin and metalloprotease 17), which demonstrates a novel role for this “sheddase” in regulating an actin-based structure
