From Who and What to How and Why – The Future of Online Encyclopaedias

This paper discusses changes in the structure of knowledge, the increasing demand for abilities of search and retrieval, assessment and evaluation, organization and creative use of relevant information. It is a review of the topic intended to serve as a basis for further research aimed at answering the many questions that arise from this paper. Today, users are finding content through search engines. This requires a different approach to the organization of encyclopaedias and other lexicographical issues. All can be found, but it is also important to know where and how to look for it. The conducted research centered around the quality of "coverage" of some, in Croatia well known, lexical units, in different Wikipedias: four regional languages and editions (Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian, Serbo-Croatian), and four world languages (English, French, German and Spanish). We observed the presence of writers and athletes in those languages. None of the selected writers had an article in every language/edition. For instance our writers are almost non-existent in Spanish and French editions, and the situation is only slightly better when it comes to German. The representation of athletes was much better, almost all of them occurring in the selected world languages. At the end we come to a few questions, such as whether it is more important to write "for yourself", i.e. to work on creating the best possible encyclopaedia intended for audiences in Croatia, and all those who use the Croatian language, or should we systematically work on the presentation of "our" issues in the publications in other languages; whether it be persons or texts from the sphere of politics, history, or (most widely understood) culture and art. If we agree that we will get relatively successful answers to questions starting with who, what, where, when, and much less successful to those beginning with how or why, then this answers the question on the role of the online encyclopaedia in the transfer of knowledge. The value of the knowledge contained in the answer to the question posed with how or why is "value added" to the encyclopaedia; it is what distinguishes it from a dictionary or a search engine

    Leichtlösliche, lichtechte Perylen-Fluoreszenzfarbstoffe

    Get PDF

Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the important indicators that define mental health functioning during the first pregnancy: the level of depression, anxiety and fear of childbirth in the context of null intimate pa Subjects and methods: A group of 325 nulliparas in the third trimester of pregnancy were enrolled at the Childbirth preparation Division of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. The following instruments were applied: Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised, The Edinburgh Depression Scale, two aspects of anxiety - Zung Anxiety Scale and a questionnaire regarding fear of childbirth. Attachment anxiety and avoidance scales were recoded into four categories of a prototypical attachment style: secure, fearful, preoccupied and dismissive. Two-way ANOVA and the chi-square test were used for the statistical analysis. Results: All indicators of mental health functioning of our sample of nulliparas differed significantly regarding their partner attachment style. Nulliparas with a fearful, but also with a preoccupied type of attachment, showed less optimal mental health indicators compared to those with a secure/dismissive type of attachment. A significant interactive effect of partner attachment and emotional support from the older generation was found on the level of depression. Partner attachment styles and emotional support from the older generation were found to be statistically dependent. Conclusions:In our sample a secure attachment seems to represent a protective buffer for the level of depression, even when a lower emotional support of the older generation was included. Screening and intervening on intimate attachment style as a protective factor for antenatal depression and different forms of anxiety is proposed

The role of the thymus in immunosenescence: lessons from the study of thymectomized individuals

The thymus is the major site of T cell production and a key organ of the immune system. Its natural involution during the course of life has cast doubts as to its importance for the integrity of our immunity in adulthood. We provide here an overview of the recent works focusing on the immunological evaluation of subjects thymectomized during early childhood due to cardiac surgery of congenital heart defects. These studies represent new advances in our appreciation of the role of the thymus in humans and more generally in our understanding of the development of immunosenescence

Perceptions of Disaster Risk and Vulnerability in Rural Texas

    Get PDF
Rural areas are uniquely vulnerable to a variety of hazards given their social and economic composition. Economic reliance on agriculture and natural resource extraction increases vulnerability to certain types of natural hazards such as drought, wildfires, and floods. Moreover, rural communities often lack adequate resources to prepare for and respond to disasters. Using data from the Texas Rural Survey, the U.S. Census, and the Spatial Hazards Events and Losses Database for the United States; this research explores questions related to risk perception, vulnerability to disaster, and perceptions of community efficacy in a rural context. Results indicate that rural Texans show greatest concern for drought, wildfires, tornadoes, and severe winter weather. However, perceptions of risk were not necessarily a reflection of historical or future risk or perceptions of community efficacy. This article concludes with comments on the relevance of these findings for community emergency preparedness planning and resilience in rural settings

Received 22 August 2018. Accepted 3 December 2018. Published online 1 April 2019.The problem of age diversity in the workplace is becoming increasingly important, especially because of the ageing workforce. Knowledgesharing should therefore be encouraged among employees of different ages. The topic of this research is the role of age-based differentiation or intergenerational differentiation in motivation to share knowledge. Participating in this study were 202 employees of six Slovenian companies. The participants filled out the Knowledgesharing Motivation Measure, translated into Slovenian for the purposes of this study, and The Intergenerational Differentiation in the Workplace Measure. Our objective was to find out how three different age groups differ in the subjective perceptions of knowledgesharing motivation and how the perception of intergenerational differentiation is correlated with knowledge sharing motivation. The results show that the youngest age group of employees feels the most discriminated against due to their age, but is also the most motivated to share knowledge when compared to the other two age groups. The correlation between the two measured constructs is not significant. The main findings are that it is important to acknowledge the younger age group of employees, since it seems to be the most vulnerable to intergenerational differentiation. Also, it is important to encourage older workers to share their valuable knowledge

A man in an urban environment (origination, interpretations, open questions)

The author in the first article tries to answer the key questions of contemporary urbanism, which, according to him, opposes the »chaos«. Using jdiorter historical retrospective observations, he comes to the conclusion that the contemporary criticism is still stronTy Influenced by »the ideological burden of pre-industrial society.« Using an analytical approach, the author evaluates the mam features of a modern urbanization which is characterized by »a megalopolis in a state of permanent origination.« Therefore, observes the author, a social organization of an urban settlement in a state of expansion is very complex. More or less the general orientation tends to the creation of smaller or larger organic megalopolis wholes. In fact, this means »the reconstruction« of previous small urban centers. There are even tendencies to a creation of town-gardens, i. e. amalgamation with agriculture as a natural mode of existence. Of course, there are tendencies orientated to »the urbanism of scientific fiction.« A man, according to the author\u27s opinion, becomes »captured« in an urbanized complex too, as well as by the progress of technology
