Chlamydial infection affects young, sexually active persons. As the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the world, Chlamydia can lead to severe consequences in reproductive system, including chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and tubal factor infertility. On the other hand, although in large number of women the immune response is capable of removing the pathogen, infection can ascendently spread to the upper reproductive tract where can develop into persistent infection. Diagnostic procedures for detecting chlamydial infection include direct and indirect methods. Localized acute infections are detected by direct pathogen detection using cell culture, tests for qualitative detection of antigens, hybridization tests and nucleic acid amplification tests. When the infection has passed on the upper genital tract, especially in the case of a developed persistent infection, the diagnosis is usually made by indirect methods - the detection of antibodies to chlamydial antigens. Direct pathogen detection in patient material is necessary for the diagnosis of an acute chlamydial infection. Of all direct diagnostic tests, nucleic acid amplification tests are the only tests recommended by European and American Center for Disease Control and Prevention which can be used for the diagnosis of an acute chlamydial infection. These tests are recommended for their high sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic speed. Indirect serological tests which detect immune response or antibodies specific to chlamydial antigens are recommended for the detection of persistent chlamydial infection. Serum samples are relatively easy to collect, while tissue samples from the place of persistent infection are often hard to reach or unavailable.Publishe

Retinal detachment in the eye with the choroidal coloboma

Introduction. Choroidal coloboma is a congenital defect caused by an inadequate closure of embryonic fissure. About 40% of the eyes with the choroidal coloboma (CHC) develop the retinal detachment (RD). It is extremely difficult to manage these cases due to the lack of pigmentation at the site of choroidal coloboma. Outline of Cases. This is a case series of five patients with CHC and RD who were successfully operated using one of two different surgical techniques: pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) + silicone oil internal tamponade and/or scleral buckle with encircling band with laser photocoagulation (SB+EB+LPC) around the coloboma. The purpose of this paper is to present how to successfully handle patients with CHC, who have concurrent retinal detachment in the same eye and to compare two different techniques and indications for the predominant use of one of them in a specific case. Conclusion. Both surgical techniques can be applied with equal success in the operation of retinal detachment in eyes with the chorioidal coloboma. Which one will be used depends only of the posterior segment of eye findings. We use scleral buckling in cases with RD accompanied by CHC when the peripheral break is evident and there are no breaks in the coloboma itself. We also perform, 2-3 days after surgery, laser burns around the coloboma, which is our modification of this technique. In all other cases it is indicated to perform PPV+silicon oil internal tamponade

Alluvial Water Source Capacity under the Climate Change and Other Impacts—Case Study of the Pek River in Serbia

    No full text
River discharge changes, in addition to natural variability, depend on several factors. Three factors are the most important: climate change (CC), changes in human use of water (HU), and land use changes (LU). River discharge has hydraulic connection with its alluvial sources and both are sensitive to climate and other changes. Alluvial water sources (ALWSs) are often used for water supplying purposes. The question is what could we expect in the future? Are they more or less sensible on climate change and other two factors, compare to river discharge changes, or it differ from case to case

Hydrodynamic analysis application of contaminated groundwater remediation to oil hydrocarbons

    No full text
In this paper, the application of the hydrodynamic analysis in the selected ‘pumping and treatment’ remediation method of groundwater hydrocarbon pollution in the case of the Pancevo oil refinery is examined. The applied hydrodynamic analysis represents a regular and necessary approach in modern hydrogeology. Previous chemical analysis of soil and groundwater samples at observation objects revealed their pollution by oil products. New researches included the constraction of 12 piezometric boreholes of varying depths, geoelectric soil sounding, ‘in situ’ measurement of the present contaminant, detected as a hydrophobic phase of LNAPL, chemical analysis of soil and groundwater samples with emphasis on total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) content, total fats and mineral oils, mercury cations and other characteristic compounds, etc. These researches define the volume of contamination issued by the ‘light’ (LNAPL) contamination phase. The selected remediation method for this type of pollution is the ‘Pump and Treat’ method, which implies the pumping of contaminated groundwater from aquifer and their subsequent treatment. A hydrodynamic method was used to select the optimal hydrotechnical solution for LNAPL extraction. On the mathematical model, the prediction calculations for two variant solutions were carried out (‘hydraulic isolation’ and complex) for the application of groundwater contamination remediation characterized as front pollution substance (by extraction and injection wells or infiltration pool). By extraction wells performing, it would be possible to remove the LNAPL from the surface of the water with special pumps-skimmers. The importance of the hydrodynamic method application is, in addition to the hydrotechnical solution selection for the LNAPL drainage, the provision of quality basis for the dimensioning of these objects based on the results of the groundwater balance

Chlamydia trachomatis screening in resource-limited countries – Comparison of diagnostic accuracy of 3 different assays

© 2018 Tošić-Pajić et al. Introduction: Commercially available assays were evaluated in order to determine diagnostic accuracy of Chlamydia trachomatis specific tests for screening. Methods: The study included 225 sexually active men and women, who were tested for genital chlamydial infection in Institute of Public Health Kragujevac. Three screening tests were used: direct immunofluorescence (DIF) and rapid lateral immunochromatographic test (RT) for qualitative detection of chlamydial antigens and immunoenzyme (ELISA) test for detection of serum levels of anti-chlamydial IgA and IgG antibodies. Diagnostic efficiency of these tests were determined in relation to results obtained by RT-PCR method. Results: Statistical significance between the results obtained by RT-PCR as a gold standard and DIF, RT and ELISA were analyzed using chi-square (χ2) test. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between RT-PCR and analyzed screening tests: DIF (χ2 = 303; p < 0.001), RT (χ2 = 4.19; p = 0.041), serum IgA (χ2 = 4.19; p = 0.041) and serum IgG (χ2 = 67; p < 0.001) which indicates poor agreement between these tests. Large numbers of false positive (FP) and false negative (FN) results were observed for all tested assays. According to Youden’s index, serum IgG and DIF testing demonstrated the most-balanced sensitivity-specificity rate. RT assay exhibits the highest expanded Youden’s index, as well as the best overall diagnostic accuracy. Conclusions: None of evaluated screening tests can be recommended as individual method for the diagnosis of acute infection. We suppose that RT-PCR is unlikely to be a cost-effective screening strategy within the Serbian health system

Tuning of BiFeO3 multiferroic properties by light doping with Nb

    No full text
Bulk ceramic samples of BiFeO3 were light doped (up to 1%) with Nb5+ in the place of Fe3+ (B-site doping) and their multiferroic properties were investigated using XRD, SEM, polarization (PMTS) and magnetization (SQUID) techniques. It is shown that even the small percentages of doping can notably change electric and magnetic behavior. Electric conductivity differs by two orders of magnitude between samples doped with 0.2% and 1% Nb. The ferroelectric behavior strongly depended on conduction mechanism, and transition from space-charge-limited current (SCLC) conduction to trap-filled limited (TFL) conduction regime reflected on a change in hysteresis patterns, particularly for the samples with 0.2% and 0.5% Nb. Separation of ZFC-FC magnetization curves occurred for all Nb concentrations and increased with Nb doping. Weak ferromagnetic behavior and the increase of remnant magnetization with Nb concentration was observed from the hysteresis measurements. Coercive field changed drastically compared to the pure BiFeO3, namely, the sample with 1% Nb exhibited very high coercive magnetic field of 10 kOe

Correlation between structural, physical and chemical properties of three new tetranuclear NiII clusters

    No full text
Based on a new family of NiII cubane-like clusters, this work addresses current challenges in synthesis, analysis and dynamics of single-molecule-magnet (SMM) systems. Investigation of various synthetic routes and desorption-sorption processes yielded series of isomorphous compounds: [Ni4L4(CH3OH)4]·xsolv, [Ni4L4(CH3OH)4] and [Ni4L4]. In order to analyze these deceivingly simple materials, several analytical and quantum mechanical methods had to be used. This revealed materials with mixed lattice solvents, statistical disorder of the solvent, and disordered [Ni4L4] cores, what offered an insight into risks of the self-assembly process and interconversion dynamics of the investigated NiII family. These findings also allowed structural-magnetic relationships to be established, and the outcomes were exploited in two turns: in first, effect of the coordinated and lattice solvent on the magnetic properties was examined, and in second, magnetic properties were used to facilitate crystal structure determination
