A COMPARATIVE MULTI-TECHNIQUE INVESTIGATION ON MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION OF GILDING LAYERS AND THE CONSERVATION STATE OF 7 PORTUGUESE MANNERIST ALTARPIECES
This paper deals with the multi-analytical comparative characterization of 59 samples of
gilded and polychrome layers from 7 altarpieces studied during the Gilt-Teller project
(www.gilt-teller.pt). The altarpieces studied here belong to seven churches in the areas of
Lisbon, Santarém, Portalegre and Guarda and display stylistic and constructive features
characteristic to the Mannerism carved wood decoration in Portugal. The applied protocol of
investigation characterized the structure and manufacture technique of gilding; identified the
chemical composition of the layers constituting the gilded polychrome decoration; compared
the materials and gilding techniques encountered in the 7 altarpieces and assessed the
conservation state of each altarpiece. The analytical techniques applied to these purposes
were: stereomicroscopy (SM), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy
coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD),
MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, μRaman and μFTIR/imaging μFTIR spectroscopies. This
interdisciplinary multi-scale approach was used to elucidate the aspects related to the material
and technical aspects of “talha dourada” decoration, answering to these questions: which are
the original materials and layers in the making of the polychromy and which are the ones
added with posterior interventions; which are the relationships between gilding materials and
techniques, regarding the degree of erudition of each case study; which were the main causes
of degradation and influence to their conservation condition
Soil carbon fractions in response to mineral and organic fertilizer types and rates.
Abstract: The use of organic fertilizers from pig slurry and poultry litter can increase soil organic carbon and crop productivity. This study aimed to evaluate soil organic carbon fractions and corn yield after applying organic and mineral fertilizers. The experiment was conducted in the western region of Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil on a Nitossolo Vermelho Eutroférrico típico (Rhodic Kandiudox). The production system was an integrated crop-livestock using corn and soybean in the summer and black oat and rye with grazing by sheep in the winter. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with treatments in factorial 5 × 3 + 1, with four replications, five sources of fertilizers, three rates and the control with no fertilization. The treatments were three organic fertilizers: poultry litter, pig slurry and compost from pig slurry and two minerals fertilizer (M1 and M2). Mineral fertilizers were formulated from pig slurry (M1) and poultry litter (M2), with the application of three rates, which represent 75, 100 and 150 % of the recommendation for the crop, based on the element that is most demanding by the plant (K for soybeans and N for corn). Soil samples were collected at the layers of 0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m in which fractions of total soil organic carbon (TOC), namely particulate (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAC) were determined. Corn yield was evaluated in the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons. The results were analyzed through analysis of variance to compare sources and polynomial regression analysis for fertilizer rates. The MAC fraction has a higher proportion of TOC and its contents were higher with increasing rates of organic and mineral fertilizers, mainly in the surface layer. Poultry litter and compost fertilizers increased TOC’s particulate fraction (POC), showing the highest levels at the highest fertilization recommendation rate. Organic and mineral fertilizers positively increase corn yield, and animal-derived fertilizers show that they can be an alternative for high crop yields
Incidence of anterior segment neovascularization during intravitreal treatment for macular edema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion
Purpose: To analyze the effects of injections of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) and intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) on the incidence rates of anterior segment neovascularization (ASN) and neovascular glaucoma (NVG) in patients with macular edema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Methods: In this prospective, randomized, double-masked, sham-controlled study, 35 patients with macular edema following CRVO were randomized to intravitreal bevacizumab, intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide, or sham injections during the first 6 months of the study. The primary outcome was the incidence rate of ASN at month 6. The secondary outcomes were the mean changes from baseline in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central foveal thickness (CFT) on optical coherence tomography over time to month 12. Results: ASN developed in 8 (22.86%) eyes, including 5 (62.50%) eyes in the sham group and 3 (37.50%) eyes in the IVTA group, during 12 months of follow-up (p=0.009). BCVA differed significantly (p<0.05) among the groups only at month 1. CFT did not differ significantly (p<0.05) among the groups over 12 months. NVG required surgery and developed in one eye despite laser treatment. Conclusion: Early treatment with intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor therapy decreases the rates of ASN and NVG after CRVO.Univ Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Ophthalmol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Ophthalmol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc
Vav proteins are key regulators of Card9 signaling for innate antifungal immunity
Fungal infections are major causes of morbidity and mortality, especially in immunocompromised individuals. The innate immune system senses fungal pathogens through Syk-coupled C-type lectin receptors (CLRs), which signal through the conserved immune adaptor Card9. Although Card9 is essential for antifungal defense, the mechanisms that couple CLR-proximal events to Card9 control are not well defined. Here, we identify Vav proteins as key activators of the Card9 pathway. Vav1, Vav2, and Vav3 cooperate downstream of Dectin-1, Dectin-2, and Mincle to engage Card9 for NF-κB control and proinflammatory gene transcription. Although Vav family members show functional redundancy, Vav1/2/3(-/-) mice phenocopy Card9(-/-) animals with extreme susceptibility to fungi. In this context, Vav3 is the single most important Vav in mice, and a polymorphism in human VAV3 is associated with susceptibility to candidemia in patients. Our results reveal a molecular mechanism for CLR-mediated Card9 regulation that controls innate immunity to fungal infections
An Airport Experience Framework from a Tourism Perspective
This study, by integrating the perspectives of sociological, psychological, and service marketing and management, all of which affect the passenger experience, proposes a theoretical framework for the creation of the airport experience in relation to tourism. This research responds to the current phenomenon in which airports are offering other types of experiences within the airport terminal, expanding the role of an airport from being a utility for transportation into a place where various and different values can be offered. This research explores the current airport experience and adds to research on airport experience by clarifying ten key components necessary for airport passenger experience propositions based on existing research, the current industry phenomena, and the empirical study. The paper also underlines those components that can enhance passenger experience in relation to tourism and highlights the role that airports contribute to a destination
Isolation of Salmonella enterica in opossum (Didelphis aurita and Didelphis albiventris) of the São Paulo State, Brazil
In Brazil there is not report of Salmonella in opossum, so then, the objective of this study is to determine the isolation frequency of Salmonella enterica in opossum in São Paulo State, Brazil.
