    A greenhouse gas inventory in the municipal landfill of the city of Limeira, Brazil

    Landfill main gases are methane and carbon dioxide, and result mainly from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste. The exact distribution of gases in the landfill varies with the landfill age among other factors such as waste composition, moisture, particle size, temperature, pH, age of waste, landfill design and operation. The current Brazilian environmental legislation has encouraged the municipalities to adopt measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from landfills. The implementation of projects to reduce GHG requires the estimation of the gases produced in the landfill. This research presents a GHG inventory performed in the landfill of the city of Limeira, located in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The inventory was conducted by using the Brazilian GHG Protocol that follows the methodology of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and also IPCC guidelines. The inventory comprised data from 1985 to 2013; however, data prior to 2000 were estimated, because until that year the landfill was in fact a dump, with no monitoring of the amounts of wastes disposed of. Three categories of emissions were considered: a) direct emissions of CO2 and CH4 from the decomposition of municipal solid waste (MSW) and non-hazardous industrial waste and the emissions produced from waste transportation within the landfill and landfill operation; b) emissions resulting from electricity consumption within the operating limits of the landfill; and, c) indirect emissions from waste transportation throughout the city to the landfill and also from industries to the landfill. The results showed that in the year 2013 were emitted 35,996.91 t of CO2 e into the atmosphere. From the total, 98.91 % of emissions were produced by MSW decomposition; 0.002 % by industrial waste decomposition; 0.332 % by burning fossil fuels during landfill operation; 0.003 % by electricity consumption of electricity in the landfill and 0.75 % by waste transportation.Landfill main gases are methane and carbon dioxide, and result mainly from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste.     Nitrogen and potassium fertilization on the yield and intensity of the maize white spot.

    ABSTRACT - A plant’s nutritional balance can influence its resistance to diseases. In order to evaluate the effect of increasing doses of N and K on the yield and severity of the maize white spot, two experiments were installed in the field, one in the city of Ijaci, Minas Gerais, and the other in the city of Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais. The experimental delimitation was in randomized blocks with 5 x 5 factorial analysis of variance, and four repetitions. The treatments consisted of five doses of N (20; 40; 80; 150; 190 Kg ha-1 of N in the experiments 1 and 2) and five doses of K (15; 30; 60; 120; 180 Kg ha-1 of K in experiment 1 and 8.75; 17.5; 35; 50; 100 Kg ha-1 of K in experiment 2). The susceptible cultivar 30P70 was planted in both experiments. The plot consisted of four rows 5 meters long, with a useful area consisting of two central rows 3 meters each. Evaluations began 43 days after emergence (DAE) in the first experiment and 56 DAE in the second one. There was no significant interaction between doses of N and K and the disease progress. The effect was only observed for N. The K did not influence the yield and the severity of the disease in these experiments. Bigger areas below the severity progress curve of the white spot and better yield were observed with increasing doses of N. Thus, with increasing doses of N, the white spot increased and also did the yield. RESUMO - O equilíbrio nutricional de plantas pode influenciar a resistência a doenças. Com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de doses crescentes de N e de K na produtividade e na severidade da mancha branca do milho, foram instalados em campo, dois experimentos, um em Ijaci, MG e o outro em Sete Lagoas, MG. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com esquema de análise de variância fatorial 5 x 5 e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de 5 doses de N (20; 40; 80; 150; 190 Kg ha-1 de N nos experimentos 1 e 2) e de 5 doses de K (15; 30; 60; 120; 180 Kg ha-1 de K no experimento 1 e 8,75; 17,5; 35; 50; 100 Kg ha-1 de K no experimento 2). Foi plantado nos dois experimentos o cultivar suscetível 30P70. As parcelas foram constituídas de quatro fileiras de 5 m de comprimento, sendo a área útil composta por duas linhas centrais com 3 m cada. As avaliações iniciaram-se aos 43 dias após emergência (DAE) no primeiro e aos 56 DAE, no segundo experimento. Não houve interação significativa entre as doses de N e de K e o progresso da doença. O efeito foi observado apenas para o N. O K não influenciou a produtividade e a severidade da doença nesses experimentos. Observaram-se maiores áreas abaixo da curva de progresso da severidade da mancha branca e maior produtividade com o aumento das doses de N. Sendo assim, com o aumento das doses de N houve aumento da mancha branca do milho e também da produtividade

    Contribution of socioeconomic status, stature and birth weight to obesity in Sub-Saharan Africa: cross-sectional data from primary school-age children in Cameroon

    Background: The pattern of obesity in relation to socioeconomic status is of public health concern. This study investigates whether the association between height and obesity in children is affected by their socioeconomic background. It also explores the relationship between high birth weight and obesity. Methods: School children, (N = 557; 5 to 12 years old) were recruited from randomly selected primary schools in a cross-sectional study including 173 rural and 384 urban children in the North West Region of Cameroon. Socioeconomic status (SES) and birth weight were obtained using a self administered questionnaire. Anthropometric measures included height, weight, BMI, waist circumference and percentage body fat. These measures were transformed into age and sex-standardized variables. Then participants were divided according to quartiles of height SDS. Results: The highest frequencies of overweight/obesity (18.8%), abdominal overweight/obesity (10.9%) and high body fat/obesity (12.3%) were observed among the tallest children from a high socioeconomic background. Univariate analyses indicate that children of high SES (39.9%), fourth height quartile (33.1%) and of high birth weight (54.8%) were significantly (p<0.001) more likely to be overweight/obese. Multivariate analyses showed high SES (OR 8.3, 95% CI 3.9 - 15.4), fourth height quartile (OR 9.1, 95% CI 3.4 - 16.7) and high birth weight (OR 0.1, 95% CI 0.06 - 0.2) as independent predictors of overweight/obesity.     LiNbO3 integrated system for opto-microfluidic sensing

    International audience; In this work, we realized and tested an integrated opto-microfluidics platform entirely made on lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystals, able to detect the single droplet passage and estimate its size without the need of any imaging processing. It is based on the coupling of a self-aligned integrated optical stage, made of an array of optical waveguides, to a microfluidic circuit such as a T-junction or Cross-junction engraved in the same substrate. The platform presented high quality performances in terms of optical triggering, reproducibility and stability in time, allowing in real-time data analysis. The comparison with standard approaches using microscopes and fast camera imagining acquisition and relative post-processing, showed an increased capability better than 50%. The demonstrated feasibility of integration of these two stages will allow the realization of a Lab-On-a-Chip on a monolithic substrate of lithium niobate, exploiting its multiple applications for manipulation of droplets

    Non-intimate Relationships and Psychopathic Interpersonal and Affective Deficits as Risk Factors for Criminal Career: A Comparison Between Sex Offenders and Other Offenders

    Sex-offenders are at risk of criminal recidivism. For the treatment to be truly effective, it must be individualized. For this purpose, an accurate assessment should focus on criminological, psychological, and psychopathological features. The present study compared sex offenders with other offenders on historical experiences (i.e., problems with violence, anti-social behaviors, problems with personal relationships, problems with substance use, traumatic experiences, and parenting style). In addition, given the association between life events and psychopathy, we explored whether the relation between life events and crime type (sexual crime vs. other types of crime) might be moderated by psychopathy traits (interpersonal and affective deficits and antisocial behavior). Eighty-eight sex offenders (76% of whom child molesters) and 102 other offenders were included. The Historical, Clinical and Risk Management - 20 item Version 3 (HCR-20V3) and Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) were administered. The scores of the HCR-20V3 Historical scale items were computed to assess life events. The scores of the PCL-R factors, F1 Interpersonal affective deficits and F2 Antisocial behavior, were recorded. The presence of a history of problems with non-intimate relationships was the only significant risk factor for sexual crime compared with other crimes. Interpersonal and affective deficits provided an increased likelihood of being sex offenders as compared with other offenders when problems with non-intimate relationships were possibly/partially or certainly present

    Value of epidermal growth factor receptor status compared with growth fraction and other factors for prognosis in early breast cancer.

    The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a transmembrane glycoprotein whose expression is important in the regulation of breast cancer cell growth. The relationship between EGFR status (determined by an immunocytochemical assay) and various prognostic factors was investigated in 164 primary breast cancers. Overall 56% of tumours were EGFR-positive and the expression of EGFR was unrelated to axillary node status, tumour size and histological grade; and it was poorly associated with the tumour proliferative activity measured by Ki-67 immuno-cytochemistry. The relapse-free survival (RFS) probability at 3-years was significantly worse for patients with EGFR positive tumours (P = 0.003) and for those whose Ki-67 score was > 7.5% (P = 0.0027), as well as in patients with axillary node involvement (P = 0.01) and with poorly differentiated tumours (P = 0.04). Immunocytochemical determination of EGFR and cell kinetics gave superimposable prognostic information for predicting RFS with odds ratios of 3.51, when evaluated singly. In our series of patients EGFR, Ki-67 and node status retain their prognostic value concerning RFS in multivariate analysis. The 3-year probability of overall survival (OS) was significantly better in node-negative patients (P = 0.04) and was similar in EGFR-positive and negative patients. In conclusion, EGFR status appears to be a significant and independent indicator of recurrence in human breast cancer and the concomitant measurement of the tumour proliferative activity seems to improve the selection of patients with different risks of recurrence
