What is a categorical model of arrows?
We investigate what the correct categorical formulation of Hughes’ Arrows should be. It has long been folklore that Arrows, a functional programming construct, and Freyd categories, a categorical notion due to Power, Robinson and Thielecke, are somehow equivalent. In this paper, we show that the situation is more subtle. By considering Arrows wholly within the base category we derive two alternative formulations of Freyd category that are equivalent to Arrows—enriched Freyd categories and indexed Freyd categories. By imposing a further condition, we characterise those indexed Freyd categories that are isomorphic to Freyd categories. The key differentiating point is the number of inputs available to a computation and the structure available on them, where structured input is modelled using comonads
Towards a generation-based semantic web authoring tool
Widespread use of Semantic Web technologies requires interfaces through which knowledge can be viewed and edited without deep understanding of Description Logic and formalisms like OWL and RDF. Several groups are pursuing approaches based on Controlled Natural Languages (CNLs), so that editing can be performed by typing in sentences which are automatically interpreted as statements in OWL. We suggest here a variant of this approach which relies entirely on Natural Language Generation (NLG), and propose requirements for a system that can reliably generate transparent realisations of statements in Description Logic
The 24 hour challenge: creating a multidiscipline environment for design and entrepreneurship in engineering and design. Enhancing Employability through Enterprise Education
This Innovation and Creative Exchange (ICE) is an inter-school enterprise opportunity exclusively for second year Engineering and Design students at the University of Huddersfield. Its primary objective is to bring the best of innovative design and industry thinking into the undergraduate curriculum and to embed the latest innovation and design methodologies into the curriculum for engineering and design students – the next generation of employees for UK knowledge-based industries
The Advent of Zoning
This essay looks at some of the lawyers and judges who were instrumental in the enactment and judicial approval of American zoning laws
Classifying Higher Rank Toeplitz Operators.
To a higher rank directed graph (Λ, d), in the sense of Kumjian and Pask, 2000, one can associate natural noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebras, both weakly closed and norm closed. We introduce methods for the classification of these algebras in the case of single vertex graphs
Where to From Here for the Catholic Church- Recommendations 94 and 95 of the Redress and Civil Litigation Report
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse handed down its Final Report in December 2017. In 2015 it presented its interim Redress and Civil Litigation Report which contained final recommendations in relation to reform in civil litigation. Recommendations 94 and 95 of the Redress and Civil Litigation Report both directly and indirectly address the lack of legal entity for the Catholic Church in Australia and the problems this causes litigants seeking legal recompense. This paper considers the current legal status of the Catholic Church in Australia in light of the Recommendations
Cognitive psychopathology: The role of emotion
This paper examines the role of emotion in the
understanding of psychopathology. The influential
Cognitive Therapy model of Beck is briefly reviewed
and a number of limitations are considered. Two
particular weaknesses are highlighted in the
understanding of cognitive psychopathology; namely,
the importance of multi-level processing systems and
the importance of emotion. The Power and Dalgleish
(1997, 2008) SPAARS model is presented to show the
advantages that arise from the inclusion of multilevel
processes combined with a theoretical account of
emotion. In order to illustrate the application of the
SPAARS model to cognitive psychopathology,
findings from a recent emotion profile analysis of
clinical depression and anxiety are summarised. The
analyses also illustrate the importance of shamerelated
emotions in depression in contrast to the guiltrelated
emotions that are highlighted in classification
systems such as DSM-IV.
na compreensão da psicopatologia cognitiva;
Pyrrhic Victory: Daniel Goldman\u27s Defeat of Zoning in the Maryland Court of Appeals
Nowadays government regulation of the use of urban land is taken for granted. Such was not always the case. Some sixty years ago, the Maryland Court of Appeals held it unconstitutional for Zoning Commissioner J. Frank Crowther to deny a request for a permit to operate a tailor shop in the basement of a Eutaw Place home. This paper examines the case of Goldman v. Crowther. Goldman\u27s story reads like a comic melodrama with a tragic ending. But the saga also illuminates the social condition - it sheds light and casts shadows on the practice of xenophobia, the nature of law and the excess of regulation
