Exploring the Connection between Literature and Physical Education

    Get PDF
In many school settings, physical education and literature are thought to not be connected in any way. However, it can be argued that there is indeed a connection between these two seemingly unrelated subjects. Making a concerted effort to include physical movement and learning within core classroom subjects, including literacy, can help students understand that different areas of learning can be introduced and intertwined in other subjects to create a more wholesome and well-rounded learning experience for them

Cash Flow - The Oil That Keeps the Small and Family Business Organization Running Smoothly*

The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance of cashflow and the purposes of uses of the Statement of Cash Flows. Two different methods of calculating cash flows from operations are presented along with a discussion of ways to interpret cashflows and how to plan for future activity. The importance of cashflow should be clear to the financial manager whether the business entity be a small family business or a major corporation. A shortage of cashflow could result in the loss of valuable trade discounts or, in extreme circumstances, f 1NJ11Cial embarrassment and bankruptcy. While a cash surplus does not necessarily translate into greater returns to owners, it certainly provides opportunities/or prospective buyers who understand how to utilize positive cash flows. The caveat for interpreting cash flow is the same as that used for net income: quality counts. This means that firms that depend heavily on depreciation to generate cash flow are not looked on as favorably as firms that have a preponderance of cash flow from operations.  Furthermore, cash flow should be analyzed to make certain that the company is investing properly in order to maintain future operations. Managers who attempt to improve cash flow artificially by ignoring necessary investments in plant and equipment may not be familiar with the concepts of cashflow

Analysis of Flow Competence in an Alluvial Gravel Bed Stream, Dupuyer Creek, Montana

Critical shear stress and unit discharge flow competence models were tested against coarse bed load data from Dupuyer Creek, Montana, United States. Maximum particle sizes sampled (Dmax) and D-50 to D-90 percentiles in the bed load grain size distribution were well correlated with both shear stress and unit discharge. Bed load grain sizes became coarser with increasing flow strength. For the D-max curve, Shields dimensionless parameter for the surface D-50 was estimated at 0.044, and the exponent for relative particle size (D-i/ D-50) was - 0.59. In the unit discharge criterion the critical flow to entrain the surface D50 was poorly predicted. Flow competence relationships based on D-max are prone to the influence of outliers and sample mass variability. The mean of the three largest particles, D-max ( 3), is more sensitive to changes in flow strength than the D-50 to D-90 bed load grain sizes, and may represent a good compromise

Sialic Acid Mutarotation Is Catalyzed by the Escherichia coli β-Propeller Protein YjhT

The acquisition of host-derived sialic acid is an important virulence factor for some bacterial pathogens, but in vivo this sugar acid is sequestered in sialoconjugates as the {alpha}-anomer. In solution, however, sialic acid is present mainly as the β-anomer, formed by a slow spontaneous mutarotation. We studied the Escherichia coli protein YjhT as a member of a family of uncharacterized proteins present in many sialic acid-utilizing pathogens. This protein is able to accelerate the equilibration of the {alpha}- and β-anomers of the sialic acid N-acetylneuraminic acid, thus describing a novel sialic acid mutarotase activity. The structure of this periplasmic protein, solved to 1.5Å resolution, reveals a dimeric 6-bladed unclosed β-propeller, the first of a bacterial Kelch domain protein. Mutagenesis of conserved residues in YjhT demonstrated an important role for Glu-209 and Arg-215 in mutarotase activity. We also present data suggesting that the ability to utilize {alpha}-N-acetylneuraminic acid released from complex sialoconjugates in vivo provides a physiological advantage to bacteria containing YjhT

Younger adolescents’ perceptions of physical activity, exergaming, and virtual reality:qualitative intervention development study

Background. Novel strategies to promote physical activity (PA) in adolescence are required. The vEngage study aims to test whether a virtual reality (VR) exergaming intervention can engage younger adolescents (13-15 year old) with physical activity. Objective: This study aimed to gather adolescents’ views of using VR to encourage PA and identify the key features they would like to see in a VR exergaming intervention via interviews. Methods: Participants were recruited through two schools in London, UK. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with adolescents about their views on PA and what might work to increase PA, technology, knowledge and experience of VR, and desired features in a VR exergaming intervention. Data were analysed using Framework Analysis. Results: 31 13-15 year olds (58% female, 62% from non-white ethnicities) participated in this interview study. The vast majority had no awareness of government PA recommendations, but felt they should be more thoroughly informed. All participants were positive about the use of VR in PA promotion. Rewards, increasing challenges and a social/multiplayer aspect were identified by participants as crucial aspects to include in a VR exercise game. Barriers were related to cost of high-end systems. Being able to exercise at home was very appealing. VR exergaming was viewed as a way to overcome multiple perceived social and cultural barriers to PA, particularly for girls. Conclusions: Key elements that should be incorporated into a VR for health intervention were identified and described. These also included the use of rewards, novelty and enjoyment in immersive game play, multi-player options, real-world elements, as well as continual updates and new challenge levels. The use of VR to promote PA in adolescents is promising, but some barriers were raised
