Puhe seuran 30-vuotisjuhlakokouksessa

Sense of coherence predicts post-myocardial infarction trajectory of leisure time physical activity: a prospective cohort study

Abstract

Background

Physical activity confers a survival advantage after myocardial infarction (MI), yet the majority of post-MI patients are not regularly active. Since sense of coherence (SOC) has been associated with health outcomes and some health behaviours, we investigated whether it plays a role in post-MI physical activity.

We examined the predictive role of SOC in the long-term trajectory of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) after MI using a prospective cohort design.

Methods

A cohort of 643 patients aged †65 years admitted to hospital in central Israel with incident MI between February 1992 and February 1993 were followed up for 13 years. Socioeconomic, clinical and psychological factors, including SOC, were assessed at baseline, and LTPA was self-reported on 5 separate occasions during follow-up. The predictive role of SOC in long-term trajectory of LTPA was assessed using generalized estimating equations.

Results

SOC was consistently associated with engagement in LTPA throughout follow-up. Patients in the lowest SOC tertile had almost twice the odds (odds ratio,1.99; 95% confidence interval,1.52-2.60) of decreasing their engagement in LTPA as those in the highest tertile. A strong association remained after controlling for disease severity, depression, sociodemographic and clinical factors.

Conclusion

Our evidence suggests that SOC predicts LTPA trajectory post-MI. Assessment of SOC can help identify high-risk MI survivors, who may require additional help in following secondary prevention recommendations which can dramatically improve prognosis.</p
Sense of coherence and diabetes: A prospective occupational cohort study

Abstract

Background

Sense of coherence (SOC) is an individual characteristic related to a positive life orientation leading to effective coping. A weak SOC has been associated with indicators of general morbidity and mortality. However, the relationship between SOC and diabetes has not been studied in prospective design. The present study prospectively examined the relationship between a weak SOC and the incidence of diabetes.

Methods

The relationship between a weak SOC and the incidence of diabetes was investigated among 5827 Finnish male employees aged 18â65 at baseline (1986). SOC was measured by questionnaire survey at baseline. Data on prescription diabetes drugs from 1987 to 2004 were obtained from the Drug Imbursement Register held by the Social Insurance Institution.

Results

During the follow-up, 313 cases of diabetes were recorded. A weak SOC was associated with a 46% higher risk of diabetes in participants who had been =<50 years of age on entry into the study. This association was independent of age, education, marital status, psychological distress, self-rated health, smoking status, binge drinking and physical activity. No similar association was observed in older employees.

Conclusion

The results suggest that besides focusing on well-known risk factors for diabetes, strengthening SOC in employees of =<50 years of age can also play a role in attempts to tackle increasing rates of diabetes.</p
Personal factors associated with health-related quality of life in persons with morbid obesity on treatment waiting lists in Norway
Purpose To explore relationships of socio-demographic
variables, health behaviours, environmental characteristics
and personal factors, with physical and mental health
variables in persons with morbid obesity, and to compare
their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores with
scores from the general population.
Methods A cross-sectional correlation study design was
used. Data were collected by self-reported questionnaire
from adult patients within the first 2 days of commencement
of a mandatory educational course. Of 185 course
attendees, 142 (76.8%) volunteered to participate in the
study. Valid responses on all items were recorded for 128
participants. HRQoL was measured with the Short Form
12v2 from which physical (PCS) and mental component
summary (MCS) scores were computed. Other standardized
instruments measured regular physical activity, social
support, self-esteem, sense of coherence, self-efficacy and
coping style.
Results Respondents scored lower on all the HRQoL subdomains
compared with norms. Linear regression analyses
showed that personal factors that included self-esteem,
self-efficacy, sense of coherence and coping style
explained 3.6% of the variance in PCS scores and 41.6% in
MCS scores.
Conclusion Personal factors such as self-esteem, sense of
coherence and a high approaching coping style are strongly
related to mental health in obese persons
Paleontology of leaf beetles
`The rate of evolution in any large group is not uniform; there are periods of relatise stability, and periods of comparatively rapid change.' Cockerell and LeVeque, 1931 To Yenli Ych, my beloved wife, a most wonderful person! The fossil record of the Chrysomelidae can be tentatively traced back to the late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic Triassic. Mesozoic records at least 9 subfamilies, 19 genera, and 35 species, are represented by the Sagrinae, the exclusively Mesozoic Proto scelinae, Clytrinae, Cryptocephalinae, Eumolpinae, Chrysomelinae. Galerucinac, Alticinae, and Cassidinae. Cenozoic records at least 12 subfamilies- 63 % of the extant- 12! genera, and 325 species, include the same extant subfamilies as well as the Donaciinae, Zeugophorinae, Criocerinae, and Hispinae and can be frequently identified to genus, especially if preserved in amber. Quaternary records are often identified to extant species. tn total, at least t3! genera about 4 % of total extant, and 357 species < 1 % have been reported. At least, 24 genera <1 % of the extant seem to be extinct. Although reliable biological information associated with the fossil chrysomelids is very scarce, it seems that most of the modern host-plant associations were established, at least, in the late Mesozoic to early Cenozoic. As a whole, stasis seems to be the general rule of the chrysomelid fossil record. Together with other faunal elements, chrysomelids, especially donaciines, have been used as biogeographic and paleoclimatological indicators in the Holocene. I
