    Evaluation of role of piezo-surgical in mandibular impacted third molar removal: An original research

    Aim: The purpose of the present research was to assess the role of piezo-surgical and its effectiveness against conventional techniques for removal of impacted mandibular third molar. Methodology: Study included 16 patients (8 male and 8 female) age 17 to 32 years treated in the period from 2019 to 2021. All patients had both mandibular molars impacted. One third molar was extracted using classical technique while the other one using a piezo device. Preoperative preparation was the same for all patients and included radiological analysis and verification of teeth by ortopan tomography (OPG) and CT. Patients were assessed one, seven and 14 days after the procedure. Results: After the extraction, all patients were followed for postoperative symptoms: pain, swelling and paraesthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve. The results confirmed advantages of piezosurgery in the removal of impacted mandibular third molars. Average duration of the intervention was 18 minutes with standard technique while the duration with piezo technique was 23 minutes.     A study comparing trial registry entries of randomized controlled trials with publications of their results in a high impact factor journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association

    Purpose: The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors mandates trial registration as a precondition for publication. Growing evidence indicates that information in registry may not correlate with eventual publication. The present study was carried out with the objective of comparing content of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) published in one year in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), with the information contained in trial registries. Methods: All RCTs published in JAMA in 2013 were included. 11 data set items were matched for content between registry entry and published RCT: Title, Primary and Secondary Objectives, Study type, Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria, Treatment Age Group, Follow up, Sample Size, Primary and Secondary Outcomes. A fully correct match was scored 2, partially correct 1 and incorrect 0. Thus, maximum possible score for each paper was number of items multiplied by 2, i.e., 22. Results: The median [range] total score achieved by RCTs was 15. No RCT achieved a perfect score of 22. The largest proportion of RCTs reported secondary objectives, study type, treatment age group, follow up, sample size and primary outcomes fully correctly. However, only 13.5 %, 12 % and 13.5 % of RCTs were a perfect match with registry entries in terms of title, primary objective and secondary outcomes respectively. Almost three quarters did not match perfectly in selection criteria. Conclusion: There exist discrepancies between trial registration and published paper even in a high impact factor journal. Both authors and editors should adhere to CONSORT guidelines to ensure transparency of published research

    Enrichment efficiency of noble alloying elements on magnesium and effect on hydrogen evolution

    The role of noble element enrichment as cathodic sites for hydrogen evolution during the anodic polarisation of magnesium was evaluated by direct quantification of indium and gold enrichment using Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE). Magnesium alloyed with gold was shown to have a higher enrichment efficiency than magnesium alloyed with indium. However, the anodically induced ‘cathodic activation’ efficiency of magnesium alloyed with indium was higher. The estimated hydrogen evolution occurring at sites of enriched indium or gold was seen to be very small compared to the measured overall increased hydrogen evolution upon the respective alloys during anodic polarisation.NB is supported by Woodside Energy.
