The impact of competition on elephant musth strategies: a gameâtheoretic model
Mature male African Savannah elephants are known to periodically enter a temporary state of heightened aggression called âmusth,â often linked with increased androgens, particularly testosterone. Sexually mature males are capable of entering musth at any time of year, and will often travel long distances to find estrous females. When two musth bulls or two non-musth bulls encounter one another, the agonistic interaction is usually won by the larger male. However, When a smaller musth bull encounters a larger non-musth bull, the smaller musth male can win. The relative mating success of musth males is due partly to this fighting advantage, and partly to estrous femalesâ general preference for musth males.
Though musth behavior has long been observed and documented, the evolutionary advantages of musth remain poorly understood. Here we develop a gameâtheoretic model of male musth behavior which assumes musth duration as a parameter, and distributions of small, medium and large musth males are predicted in both time and space. The predicted results are similar to the musth timing behavior observed in the Amboseli National Park elephant population, and further results are generated with relevance to Samburu National Park. We discuss small male musth behavior, the effects of estrous female spatial heterogeneity on musth timing, conservation applications, and the assumptions underpinning the model

Facts, Interactivity and Videotape : Exploring the Design Space of Data in Interactive Video Storytelling
We live in a society that is increasingly data rich, with an unprecedented amount of information being captured, stored and analysed about our lives and the people we share them with. We explore the relationship between this new data and emergent forms of interactive video storytelling. In particular we ask: i) how can interactive video storytelling techniques be employed to provide accessible, informative and pleasurable ways for people to engage with data; and ii) how can data be used by the creators of interactive video stories to meet expressive goals and support new forms of experience? We present an analysis of 43 interactive videos that use data in a noteworthy fashion. This analysis reveals a design space comprising key techniques for telling engaging interactive video stories with and about data. To conclude, we discuss challenges relating to the production and consumption of such content and make recommendations for future research

The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey: Star-formation in UV-luminous galaxies from their luminosity functions
We present the ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function of galaxies from the
GALEX Medium Imaging Survey with measured spectroscopic redshifts from the
first data release of the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. This sample selects
galaxies with high star formation rates: at 0.6 < z < 0.9 the median star
formation rate is at the upper 95th percentile of optically-selected (r<22.5)
galaxies and the sample contains about 50 per cent of all NUV < 22.8, 0.6 < z <
0.9 starburst galaxies within the volume sampled.
The most luminous galaxies in our sample (-21.0>M_NUV>-22.5) evolve very
rapidly with a number density declining as (1+z)^{5\pm 1} from redshift z = 0.9
to z = 0.6. These starburst galaxies (M_NUV<-21 is approximately a star
formation rate of 30 \msuny) contribute about 1 per cent of cosmic star
formation over the redshift range z=0.6 to z=0.9. The star formation rate
density of these very luminous galaxies evolves rapidly, as (1+z)^{4\pm 1}.
Such a rapid evolution implies the majority of star formation in these large
galaxies must have occurred before z = 0.9.
We measure the UV luminosity function in 0.05 redshift intervals spanning
0.1<z<0.9, and provide analytic fits to the results. At all redshifts greater
than z=0.55 we find that the bright end of the luminosity function is not well
described by a pure Schechter function due to an excess of very luminous
(M_NUV<-22) galaxies. These luminosity functions can be used to create a radial
selection function for the WiggleZ survey or test models of galaxy formation
and evolution. Here we test the AGN feedback model in Scannapieco et al.
(2005), and find that this AGN feedback model requires AGN feedback efficiency
to vary with one or more of the following: stellar mass, star formation rate

Fatal Canine Intoxications Linked to the Presence of Saxitoxins in Stranded Marine Organisms Following Winter Storm Activity.
At the start of 2018, multiple incidents of dog illnesses were reported following consumption of marine species washed up onto the beaches of eastern England after winter storms. Over a two-week period, nine confirmed illnesses including two canine deaths were recorded. Symptoms in the affected dogs included sickness, loss of motor control, and muscle paralysis. Samples of flatfish, starfish, and crab from the beaches in the affected areas were analysed for a suite of naturally occurring marine neurotoxins of dinoflagellate origin. Toxins causing paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) were detected and quantified using two independent chemical testing methods in samples of all three marine types, with concentrations over 14,000 ”g saxitoxin (STX) eq/kg found in one starfish sample. Further evidence for PSP intoxication of the dogs was obtained with the positive identification of PSP toxins in a vomited crab sample from one deceased dog and in gastrointestinal samples collected post mortem from a second affected dog. Together, this is the first report providing evidence of starfish being implicated in a PSP intoxication case and the first report of PSP in canines
The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey: improved distance measurements to z = 1 with reconstruction of the baryonic acoustic feature
We present significant improvements in cosmic distance measurements from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, achieved by applying the reconstruction of the baryonic acoustic feature technique. We show using both data and simulations that the reconstruction technique can often be effective despite patchiness of the survey, significant edge effects and shot-noise. We investigate three redshift bins in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 1, and in all three find improvement after reconstruction in the detection of the baryonic acoustic feature and its usage as a standard ruler. We measure model-independent distance measures DV(rsfid/rs) of 1716 ± 83, 2221 ± 101, 2516 ± 86 Mpc (68 perâcent CL) at effective redshifts z = 0.44, 0.6, 0.73, respectively, where DV is the volume-averaged distance, and rs is the sound horizon at the end of the baryon drag epoch. These significantly improved 4.8, 4.5 and 3.4 per cent accuracy measurements are equivalent to those expected from surveys with up to 2.5 times the volume of WiggleZ without reconstruction applied. These measurements are fully consistent with cosmologies allowed by the analyses of the Planck Collaboration and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We provide the DV(rsfid/rs) posterior probability distributions and their covariances. When combining these measurements with temperature fluctuations measurements of Planck, the polarization of Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 9, and the 6dF Galaxy Survey baryonic acoustic feature, we do not detect deviations from a flat Î cold dark matter (ÎCDM) model. Assuming this model, we constrain the current expansion rate to Hâ = 67.15 ± 0.98 km sâ»ÂčMpcâ»Âč. Allowing the equation of state of dark energy to vary, we obtain wDE = â1.080 ± 0.135. When assuming a curved ÎCDM model we obtain a curvature value of ΩK = â0.0043 ± 0.0047
Calibration Belt for Quality-of-Care Assessment Based on Dichotomous Outcomes
Prognostic models applied in medicine must be validated on independent samples,
before their use can be recommended. The assessment of calibration,
i.e., the model's ability to provide reliable
predictions, is crucial in external validation studies. Besides having several
shortcomings, statistical techniques such as the computation of the standardized
mortality ratio (SMR) and its confidence intervals, the HosmerâLemeshow
statistics, and the Cox calibration test, are all non-informative with respect
to calibration across risk classes. Accordingly, calibration plots reporting
expected versus observed outcomes across risk subsets have been used for many
years. Erroneously, the points in the plot (frequently representing deciles of
risk) have been connected with lines, generating false calibration curves. Here
we propose a methodology to create a confidence band for the calibration curve
based on a function that relates expected to observed probabilities across
classes of risk. The calibration belt allows the ranges of risk to be spotted
where there is a significant deviation from the ideal calibration, and the
direction of the deviation to be indicated. This method thus offers a more
analytical view in the assessment of quality of care, compared to other
approaches
Standards for Graph Algorithm Primitives
It is our view that the state of the art in constructing a large collection
of graph algorithms in terms of linear algebraic operations is mature enough to
support the emergence of a standard set of primitive building blocks. This
paper is a position paper defining the problem and announcing our intention to
