Determining Season of Occupation at Tranquility Farm, Maine Using Oxygen Isotopes from Mya arenaria

    Get PDF
Coastal shell midden archaeological sites uniquely preserve information regarding past human habitation there as well as the about the paleoenvironment. In this study, oxygen isotopes (δ18O) from archaeological Mya arenaria shells collected from the Tranquility Farm site in Gouldsboro, Maine were used to determine the site’s season of occupation. Modern Mya arenaria were collected throughout a calendar year from a nearby clam flat in Jones Cove, Gouldsboro to establish a modern isotopic baseline to which the archaeological shell δ18O values were compared. The results indicate that the archaeological samples occurred most frequently within the modern monthly winter values ranges. Additionally, this study highlights the challenges of comparing archaeological and modern samples. Determining the season of occupation at Tranquility Farm will contribute to archaeologists’ understanding of coastal subsistence and settlement patterns in Maine, and the observations made throughout the isotopic analysis can be used to inform further studies

Exploring optionality : the case of null objects in the medieval Romance languages

    Get PDF
Altres ajuts: This research would not have been possible without the funding of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) through the RTG 2636: Form-Meaning Mismatches. The following paper considers the potential for optionality of anaphoric null objects in two early Romance languages: Old French and Old Tuscan. In both languages, anaphoric objects can be omitted in different syntactic contexts (e.g., in coordination with prepositional infinitives or in adjunct non-finite clauses). However, overt objects can be found in almost all contexts which also allow null objects. The current paper argues that null objects in both Old French and Old Tuscan were optional, in the sense that they were never the only option for objects, and that having a null or an overt object did not have bearing in the interpretation of the sentence

The Sustaining Factors of Service-Learning at a National Leader School: A Case Study

    Get PDF
This case study examines the sustaining factors of a fully implemented and nationally recognized high school service-learning program. More specifically, it investigates why Community Service Learning has sustained itself for nine years at a New England high school recognized as a National Service-Learning Leader School by the Corporation for National Service. The study describes the process of adoption, design, implementation, and paths to institutionalization. It also considers the organizational conditions that promoted institutionalization at this site. The research approach was primarily qualitative. The study exposes the broad narrative of the case from the perspective off Our data sources: observations, documents and artifacts, interviews and a faculty survey. Key actors and supports as well as obstacles and coping processes are noted in the findings. Recommendations gleaned from the study are directed at sustaining comprehensive service-learning programs that provide a framework of meaning and higher purpose to academic work

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth 119 (2014): 822–839, doi:10.1002/2013JB010110.We detected 32,078 very small, local microearthquakes (average ML = −1) during a 9 month deployment of five ocean bottom seismometers on the periphery of the Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse active mound. Seismicity rates were constant without any main shock-aftershock behavior at ~243 events per day at the beginning of the experiment, 128 events per day after an instrument failed, and 97 events per day at the end of the experiment when whale calls increased background noise levels. The microearthquake seismograms are characterized by durations of <1 s and most have single-phase P wave arrivals (i.e., no S arrivals). We accurately located 6207 of the earthquakes, with hypocenters clustered within a narrow depth interval from ~50 to 125 m below seafloor on the south and west flanks of the deposit. We model the microearthquakes as reaction-driven fracturing events caused by anhydrite deposition in the secondary circulation system of the hydrothermal mound and show that under reasonable modeling assumptions an average event represents a volume increase of 31–58 cm3, yielding an annual (seismogenic) anhydrite deposition rate of 27–51 m3.This work was supported in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation, National Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Deep Ocean Exploration Institute.2014-09-1

Former l'individu, profiter du territoire, élever la nation : la pensée libérale de Lomer Gouin, 1897-1920

    Get PDF
