Influence of the Surface Viscosity on the Breakup of a Surfactant-Laden Drop
We examine both theoretically and experimentally the breakup of a pendant drop loaded with an
insoluble surfactant. The experiments show that a significant amount of surfactant is trapped in the resulting
satellite droplet. This result contradicts previous theoretical predictions, where the effects of surface tension
variation were limited to solutocapillarity and Marangoni stresses. We solve numerically the hydrodynamic
equations, including not only those effects but also those of surface shear and dilatational viscosities. We
show that surface viscosities play a critical role to explain the accumulation of surfactant in the satellite
droplet.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad DPI2013-46485-C3-1-R, TRA2013- 45808-RJunta de Extremadura GR1004
A financial analysis of born-global firms: evidence from Spain
From the beginning of the 1970s to the present day, significant changes have taken place in the competitive and organizational
behavior of small and medium-sized companies (SMEs). Recently, some of these factors have applied more
intensively, and this has given rise to growth in the number of new companies that undertake overseas operations almost
immediately (known as born globals).
The phenomenon of early internationalization is relatively recent, so there are still many aspects that need to be studied.
The objective of this study is to contribute to the scarce empirical literature existing in Spain on this topic, by providing
evidence on the possible differences in character of the born-global firms compared with the rest of exporting
companies. To this end, the focus of the study is on the analysis of variables such as the size and sector of activity of
these companies, and their principal economic and financial magnitudes.
A sample of 1,324 Spanish SMEs that were exporting in 2007 was surveyed; of this total approximately 12% identified
themselves as having adopted early internationalization.
The results obtained indicate that the born-global firms are, on average, smaller; they are classified mostly to the services
sector; and they are much more leveraged than the rest of Spanish SMEs that export
Credit risk mitigation and SMEs bank financing in Basel II : the case of the Loan Guarantee Associations
The objective of this paper is to analyse the impact of the techniques foreseen in the Basel Agreement II
(BII) for mitigating the risk of default on bank loans to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). In particular, we
will conduct an analysis of the effect of the guarantees that the Loan Guarantee Association (LGA) offer to the
SMEs on the assignment of capital requirements of the financial entities under BII. At the same time, the study
will examine the effect of this guarantee on the credit risk premium that the financial entities should charge
their clients, and whether this foreseeable decrease in the interest rates applicable to the SMEs is compensated
by the cost of the guarantee.
The results show that, considering that the cost of the LGA guarantee in Spain is around 0.68%, it will
be advantageous for an SME with the annual sales of less than or equal to €5 million to request this guarantee
whenever the probability of default (PD) of the LGA is <1.1%, if the approach utilised by the financial entity is
the Internal Ratings-Based (IRB) and the SME is considered as corporate; however, if the SME is included in a
regulatory retail portfolio, then the limit for the PD of the LGA decreases to 0.71%. On the other hand, when
the approach utilised is the Standardised one, then will be profitable for an SME treated as retail to request this
guarantee whenever the PD of the LGA is <3.35% (3.95% for corporate exposures)
Evaluation of the European Policies in Support of Ultraperipheric Regions, Azores, Madeira, Canarias, Guadalupe, Martinique, Guyane and Reunion
The paper looks at the development of the EU's outermost regions. We develop a model not only to explain the effects caused by peripherality but also to evaluate the European policies towards ultra peripheral regions. Ultra-peripherality is an economic and social phenomenon associated to a geographical structure characterised by two attributes: size and access. The structure of the model to analyse size, or supply performance, can be represented in three interrelated blocks: i) the first block explains the effect on the population of driving activities in island economies: exports, external aid for employment and external subsidies; ii) the second block establishes the relationships between population and activities associated to the provision of goods and services not receiving external aid; iii) the third block estimates the product and the income of the region by multiplying the quantity of each type of activity, measured in terms of the number of jobs involved. The structure of the model for access, or demand performance, is in a way implicit in the model of size through the population indicator; however, the population indicator does not clearly translate variations of accessibility to the region being. The present study uses the demographic potential to arrive at an accessibility indicator that uses easily accessible statistical data: the population and the traffic of passengers. We conclude that the impact of ultra-peripheral policies are weaker in the regions more dependent on external public transferences, the connection with neighbour countries can produce important effects in the economy, the elimination of the "sea rights" in most of the regions could generate important impacts in the respective development process, the effective liberalisation of air transportation will lead to a strong increase in the accessibility and the development process based on import substitution and external public transferences can led to a big increase in the population and created a great dependence on the "sea rights".
UniTV, TV channel in University of Huelva
Spanish universities have chosen to incorporate the video into the teaching and learning through the integration of content on television enterprise portals by using information technologies and Internet use, with this aim to boost teaching and research through the dissemination of content through the network media. Central regions for bivariate distributions
For a one-dimensional probability distribution, the classical concept
of central region as a real interquantile interval arises in all applied sciences.
We can find applications, for instance, with dispersion, skewness and
detection of outliers. All authors agree with the main problem in a multivariate generalization: there does not exist a natural ordering in n-dimensions, n > 1. Because of this reason, the great majority of these generalizations depend on their use. We can say that is common to generalize the concept of central region under the definition of the well known concept of spatial median. In our work, we develop an intuitive concept which can be interpreted as level curves for distribution functions and this one provides a trimmed region. Properties referred to dispersion and probability are also studied and some considerations on more than two dimensions are also considered. Furthermore, several estimations for bivariate data based on conditional quantiles are discussed
