Multistage Output-lifting Eigenstructure Assignment: A Multirate Ball and Plate Example
By exploiting both the left and the right allowable subspaces in consecutive stages, this paper extends a recently-developed output-lifting eigenstructure assignment approach into a multistage eigenstructure assignment scheme. In this scheme, design degrees of freedom, enlarged via output-lifting, are further exploited to improve eigenvector assignment. To mitigate the inherent conflicts between the theoretical development of eigenstructure assignment and inherent physical system characteristics, the paper also clearly demonstrates how to derive an ideal eigenstructure, particularly the desired eigenvectors, to distribute and decouple the natural modes among appropriate states or outputs, based upon an example: a novel multirate Ball and Plate system. The design and simulation results show the efficacy of the scheme
A study of error diversity in robotic swarms for task partitioning in foraging tasks
Often in swarm robotics, an assumption is made that all robots in the swarm behave the same and will have a similar (if not the same) error model. However, in reality this is not the case and this lack of uniformity in the error model, and other operations, can lead to various emergent behaviours. This paper considers the impact of the error model and compares robots in a swarm that operate using the same error model (uniform error) against each robot in the swarm having a different error model (thus introducing error diversity). Experiments are presented in the context of a foraging task. Simulation and physical experimental results show the importance of the error model and diversity in achieving expected swarm behaviour

Immunophenotyping and Efficacy of Low Dose ATG in Non-Sensitized Kidney Recipients Undergoing Early Steroid Withdrawal: A Randomized Pilot Study
Rabbit antithymocyte globulin (ATG) is commonly used as an induction therapy in renal transplant recipients, but the ideal dosage in tacrolimus-based early steroid withdrawal protocols has not been established. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the immunophenotyping and efficacy of lower dose ATG in low immunological-risk kidney transplant recipients. In this prospective study, 45 patients were randomized (1∶1) to our standard dose ATG (total dose 3.75 mg/kg)(sATG) vs. lower dose 2.25 mg/kg (lowATG). All patients underwent early steroid withdrawal within 7 days. The primary end point was biopsy-proven acute rejection at 12 months. Prospective immunophenotyping of freshly isolated PBMCs was performed at baseline, 3, 6, 12 months post-transplant. The rate of acute rejection was 17% and 10% in the sATG and lowATG, respectively. Effector memory T cells, Tregs and recent thymic emigrants T cells had similar kinetics post-transplant in both groups. No statistically significant differences were found in graft survival, patient survival or infections between the two groups, though there was a non-significant increase in leukopenia (43%v s. 30%), CMV (8% vs. 0) and BK (4% vs. 0) infections in sATG group vs. lowATG. In sum, in low immunological risk kidney recipients undergoing steroid withdrawal, low dose ATG seems to be efficacious in preventing acute rejection and depleting T cells with potentially lower infectious complications. A larger study is warranted to confirm these findings. Trial Registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT0054840

The Post-2007 Crises and Europe's Place in the Global Economy
What is often abbreviated to GFC included three distinct crises: the 2007-8 North Atlantic financial crisis, a 2008-9 global economic crisis and public finance crises which became increasingly focussed on the eurozone in 2010-12. The relative weight of emerging market economies in the global economy, which had been increasing for several decades, grew even more rapidly in 2008-11 as the economies of the USA and Europe faltered, and other open economies recovered rapidly from the global economic crisis. This poses challenges for global economic governance, although there are constraints on Asia being a more assertive force. For the EU the greater dangers are, first, that if EU leaders see their economies as victims of a GFC then they will fail to address their economies' own shortcomings, and, second, that preoccupation with internal crises will distract EU leaders from rising to the challenges and opportunities associated with the evolving multipolar global economy
