    Artificial Intelligence in Classical and Quantum Photonics

    The last decades saw a huge rise of artificial intelligence (AI) as a powerful tool to boost industrial and scientific research in a broad range of fields. AI and photonics are developing a promising two-way synergy: on the one hand, AI approaches can be used to control a number of complex linear and nonlinear photonic processes, both in the classical and quantum regimes; on the other hand, photonics can pave the way for a new class of platforms to accelerate AI-tasks. This review provides the reader with the fundamental notions of machine learning (ML) and neural networks (NNs) and presents the main AI applications in the fields of spectroscopy and chemometrics, computational imaging (CI), wavefront shaping and quantum optics. The review concludes with an overview of future developments of the promising synergy between AI and photonics

    Exclusive Photoproduction of the Cascade (Xi) Hyperons

    We report on the first measurement of exclusive Xi-(1321) hyperon photoproduction in gamma p --> K+ K+ Xi- for 3.2 < E(gamma) < 3.9 GeV. The final state is identified by the missing mass in p(gamma,K+ K+)X measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. We have detected a significant number of the ground-state Xi-(1321)1/2+, and have estimated the total cross section for its production. We have also observed the first excited state Xi-(1530)3/2+. Photoproduction provides a copious source of Xi's. We discuss the possibilities of a search for the recently proposed Xi5-- and Xi5+ pentaquarks.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Influence of ovarian stimulation for IVF/ICSI on the antioxidant defence system and relationship to outcome

    Ovarian stimulation is used with IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles to obtain multiple oocytes and improve pregnancy rates; however, it also induces perturbation in the oxidant-antioxidant balance leading to oxidation stress. The present study monitored the plasma antioxidant status in women undergoing a long agonist protocol of ovarian stimulation at three different time points: at baseline (T0), after pituitary suppression (T1) and on the day of oocyte retrieval (T2). The antioxidant composition of follicular fluid samples collected on T2 was also evaluated. Significant decreases (P < 0.05) of plasma vitamin C, vitamin E and carotenoids were found between T1 and T2 but not between T0 and T1. At T2, high plasma vitamin E was associated with high numbers of total and mature oocytes retrieved per patient, which, in turn, were favourable for achieving pregnancy. Accordingly, women who became pregnant presented higher vitamin E concentrations both in plasma and FF than those who did not. In conclusion, this study confirmed the occurrence of significant modifications of the plasma antioxidant profile during ovarian stimulation with gonadotrophins; at the same time, it was found that both systemic and follicular antioxidant status may be related to IVF/ICSI outcome

    Multiphoton Fabrication of Proteinaceous Nanocomposite Microstructures with Photothermal Activity in the Infrared

    Two-photon laser writing is used here to fabricate 3D proteinaceous microstructures with photothermal functionality in the near-infrared spectral region and tunable elasticity. The photo-cross-linking is initiated in bovine serum albumin (BSA) by rose bengal or methylene blue and the photo-thermal effect arises from gold non-spherically symmetric nanoparticles dispersed in the ink. Massive energy transfer of the plasmonic resonances of the gold nanoparticles to methylene blue prevents effective photo-crosslinking of BSA. However, stable microstructures with photo-thermal functionality can be fabricated in the rose bengal proteinaceous inks. On these microstructures, with a gold atom concentration as low as 1% w/w, a highly localized temperature increase can be quickly (≅1 s) reached and maintained under continuous wave laser irradiation at 800 nm. The photothermal efficiency under continuous wave laser irradiation depends on the thickness of the microstructure and can reach 12.2 ± 0.4 °C W−1 These proteinaceous microstructures represent therefore a promising platform for future applications in the fields like physical stimulation of cells for regenerative nanomedicine

    Disease-specific and general health-related quality of life in newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients: The Pros-IT CNR study

    BACKGROUND: The National Research Council (CNR) prostate cancer monitoring project in Italy (Pros-IT CNR) is an observational, prospective, ongoing, multicentre study aiming to monitor a sample of Italian males diagnosed as new cases of prostate cancer. The present study aims to present data on the quality of life at time prostate cancer is diagnosed. METHODS: One thousand seven hundred five patients were enrolled. Quality of life is evaluated at the time cancer was diagnosed and at subsequent assessments via the Italian version of the University of California Los Angeles-Prostate Cancer Index (UCLA-PCI) and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). RESULTS: At diagnosis, lower scores on the physical component of the SF-12 were associated to older ages, obesity and the presence of 3+ moderate/severe comorbidities. Lower scores on the mental component were associated to younger ages, the presence of 3+ moderate/severe comorbidities and a T-score higher than one. Urinary and bowel functions according to UCLA-PCI were generally good. Almost 5% of the sample reported using at least one safety pad daily to control urinary loss; less than 3% reported moderate/severe problems attributable to bowel functions, and sexual function was a moderate/severe problem for 26.7%. Diabetes, 3+ moderate/severe comorbidities, T2 or T3-T4 categories and a Gleason score of eight or more were significantly associated with lower sexual function scores at diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Data collected by the Pros-IT CNR study have clarified the baseline status of newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients. A comprehensive assessment of quality of life will allow to objectively evaluate outcomes of different profile of care

    Time for a consensus conference on pain in neurorehabilitation

    Pain represents a common problem in the setting of neurorehabilitation, in that it is a common outcome measure but may also have a negative effect on motor and cognitive outcomes. Guidelines, expert opinions or consensus statements on pain in neurorehabilitation are largely lacking. The Italian Consensus Conference on Pain in Neurorehabilitation (ICCPN) was promoted to answer some questions on this topic, and its recommendations may offer practical and useful information and represent the basis for future studies on pain in neurorehabilitation
