Girls in IT: How to develop talent and leverage support
The objectives of this panel are to inform the audience about national and regional initiatives developed by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) to reach out to middle and high school girls; learn from promising experiences in which the panelists have been directly involved; and discuss venues to scale and sustain efforts to increase women\u27s participation in technology careers. Panelists will describe their particular experiences, and discuss ways to utilize the Aspirations in Computing program to increase enrollment and retention of females in computing. A minimum of 30 minutes will be set aside for question and answer
Socio-economic imperatives as well as the necessity to return a clientele in the past institutionalized for long periods of time in their own milieu have contributed to the emergence of new practices. Received dose variability after administration of I-131 for treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats
Abstract Background Injectable radioactive iodine (Iâ131) frequently is used to treat hyperthyroidism in cats. In human medicine, residual activity after injection of radionuclides has been reported, and the actual quantity administered is recorded after administration. Objective Our aim was to evaluate actual administered dose variability after administration of preprepared Iâ131 single unit doses for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats. Animals Twentyâseven cats with hyperthyroidism treated with Iâ131 between April 2017 and March 2019. Methods Retrospective observational study of cats treated with preprepared single unit Iâ131 doses. For each dose, the measured activity before administration and residual activity were recorded. The measured dose and the actual dose administered were compared to the prescribed dose. Results Measured activity before administration ranged from 88.4% to 103.3% of the prescribed dose. Mean residual activity was 5.2â±â3.0 MBq (ranging from 1.5% to 15% of the prescribed dose). The actual dose administered (measured activityâââresidual activity) ranged from 79.1% to 100.2% of the prescribed dose. Seventeen of 28 (60.7%) of the actual administered doses differed between 10% and 20% of the prescribed dose. One administered dose had a >20% difference compared to the prescribed dose (79.10% of the prescribed dose). Conclusion and Clinical Importance Our study identified variability in the residual and actual administered activity of Iâ131 as compared to the prescribed dose, which should be taken into consideration when treating cats with (predrawn) Iâ131

Slow information in theory and practice: a qualitative exploration into the implications of a Slow perspective of human information behaviour
This research project was motivated by the question of how a Slow perspective may relate to and impact upon theories of information behaviour and upon everyday information practices. Two related qualitative studies were undertaken to explore the relevance of Slow principles to the notion of the information society. The task-based, fixed end-points of existing theories of information behaviour and information literacy are shown to inadequately reflect the complexity of life in a social landscape characterised by the acceleration, and subsequent proliferation, of information channels.
The project progressed through three distinct but related phases which are reported here. First, the conceptual foundations of a Slow perspective were hypothesised during reviews of the literature and existing conceptions of the information society. A Delphi study was then executed to facilitate discussion of the issues between experts in information behaviour. Thirdly, a focus group session was held to engage Slow experts in similar discussion of the issues from a practice perspective. Each phase was guided by a social constructivist methodology which encouraged participants and moderator to engage in conscious consideration of their perspective by connecting and discussing with others, echoing the Slow principles that the project sought to explore.
A Slow perspective is shown to challenge received notions of information behaviour in three ways. The first two relate to fixed causal processes wherein the temporal progression of information behaviour and, relatedly, information literacy, is disrupted by a focus on tempo. The third challenge disrupts what âinformationâ is when society itself is perceived as information-based, shifting from an instrumental to an experiential view.
Elements of a Slow approach were reported in practice as a means of attaining âinformational balanceâ, which in turn can be seen to encourage everyday information literacy. Specifically Slow attitudes were reported in some withdrawal and avoidance behaviours, and were also rejected when the pressure of informational speed and scale proved too beneficial, or indeed, too addictive.
The project concludes with an illustration of the implications of a Slow perspective of information behaviour, and recommendations for further research with this illustration in mind
