This study applies the “psychometric paradigm” of risk perception to the heavy mineral spill in the Sonora River (Mexico). A total of 241 inhabitants of the polluted area with a mean age of 46.3 years participated in the study, completing an interview questionnaire at the onset of the disaster. The results allow us to establish a profile of the 18 characteristics comprising the model and a multiple regression analysis shows that some characteristics of the dimensions of dread risk and unknown risk explain a percentage of the magnitude of the perceived risk. In addition, the behaviors recommended by the authorities were classified by the participants according to their estimated usefulness. Significant differences were observed. Avoiding contact with the water was considered the most effective, followed by recommendations on the use of the water, with actions related to the environment and how to avoid pollution being considered the least effective. In sum, the strategy deployed allows us to observe how the victims perceive the disaster and organize the behaviors proposed by the authorities

La personalización de los espacios primarios a través de los objetos: personalization of primary spaces through objects

The objective of this work is to study and understand how the personalization of spaces allows observers to make inferences about their owners. A space is considered to be personalized when the owner performs a repertoire of behaviours, depositing a series of signals or codes related to their values, beliefs (Altman and Chemers, 1984), statuses and preferences (Becker, 1977), in order to thereby see himself or herself reflected in it and to feel he or she is the owner of that space (Aragonés and Pérez-López, 2009), at the same time as communicating his or her sense of identity (McAndrew, 1993). Looking beyond the definition of this term, there is evidence that this personalization allows observers to form an idea of the person who inhabits the place (Gosling, 2008; Pérez-López, 2011). The place where one can see this personalization most clearly is probably in a person’s dwelling. More than a simple construction, this is a place linked to family history and the values and beliefs of the owner. It reflects both a personal and private identity that is not accessible to everyone and a social and public identity (Cooper, 1974). The distinction that Cooper makes between personal and social identity is evident in the different rooms inside a dwelling. Social identity is reflected in the rooms that are normally accessible when people visit—principally the living room and sometimes the kitchen—whereas personal identity is expressed in rooms such as the bedroom, which is considered to be a more private and intimate space (Cooper, 1995). Building on this distinction, this work studies inferences about owners of bedrooms. More specifically, the sample of bedroom owners used comprises university students who live with their parents and who have exclusive, nonshared use of their bedroom. This definition of the sample has not been come about randomly. First, it was necessary for the owners to reside with their parents because, if they lived alone, the traces of personalization would be found throughout the dwelling, and not brought together in a single space. Secondly, it was necessary for these owners to have an exclusive use of the bedroom so as to be able to make sure that the traces within it belonged to one person.

Biased perception of the environmental impact of everyday behaviors

Despite our concern about climate change, certain psychological barriers hinder the adoption of a pro-environmental lifestyle. In the present study (n = 186), we analyzed the participants’ estimates of the environmental impact of their lifestyles, compared to their moral standards and the perceived normative impact. Results show that individuals recognize their lifestyle is more unsustainable than what is generally acceptable, yet they consider the lifestyle of others to be even more harmful. Furthermore, we studied the role of compensatory green beliefs on the biases in the estimated environmental impacts. The results showed that individuals tend to consider that pro-environmental behaviors have a neutral environmental impact. Thus, our research suggests the existence of a bias in individuals’ perception of environmental impacts.Depto. de Psicología Social, del Trabajo y DiferencialFac. de PsicologíaTRUEpu

Personalization of space is constructed through the cues that the owner leaves in the space. These cues, mostly objects, are also a basic part of the extended self. To check if there is a differentiate discourse consistent with the categories in which the objects belong, three studies are carried out. After obtaining a list of the most representative, in the subsequent study the participants short these objects using their own criteria. A Cluster analysis showed two categories, Functional and Symbolic. Finally, a content analysis about the reasons of participants to choose each object showed differentiated discourses for each category. These results confirm the objects are organized into Functional and Symbolic, producing differentiated discourses. depending on the category they belong.La personalización del espacio se construye con las claves que el propietario distribuye en el espacio. Nature connectedness is determined by the representation individuals have about themselves within nature. This concept is often studied in relation to the direct contact individuals have with natural environment, which according to some studies have demonstrated to generate positive effects by fostering a feeling of connecting and bonding with nature, as well as improving their wellbeing. The main focus of this study was to calculate and assess the relation between Nature Connectedness and wellbeing of participants. The methodological approach of this research reaches quantitative data comparing results obtained from both samples, as well as correlations between the variables. The sample for this study was composed by two groups of university students (M = 25 years old). Both contrast group (n = 32) and experience group (n = 29) filled the questionnaire in two separate moments and in different environments. First data collection moment for both groups was held inside a university classroom. A second moment of data collection was carried out after a month from the first application, having the contrast group answer the questionnaire on a classroom again whilst the experience group responded it during an excursion to Isla Del Tiburon in Northwestern Mexico after performing some recreational activities being totally immersed in a local desertic environment. Questionnaire was composed by a 6 point Likert type scale measuring Nature Connectedness through concepts such as Nature relatedness and Love and care for the natural, as well as Subjective and Psychological Wellbeing of participants. Results show that both wellbeing and Nature Connectedness are positively influenced by performing activities out in the natural environment. This work was also conducted in response to the need to understand the full extent of Contact and Connectedness to nature, carrying out an exploratory study in desertic settings when much of the early work centers around the study of these variables in green nature environments.Depto. de Psicología Social, del Trabajo y DiferencialFac. de PsicologíaTRUEpu

    Some notes about Environmental Psychology

The personalization of space is constructed through the items that the resident distributes around the space they inhabit, and they can be considered part of the resident’s self. Three studies were conducted with the goal of establishing the categories into which the objects contained in bedrooms can be organized and to evaluate to what extent these categories are related to the extended self and attachment. In the first study, with 77 students, we obtained a list of the most representative objects in their bedrooms. In the next study, a group of 56 students classified these objects freely using their own criteria; a subsequent cluster analysis showed four categories: Functional, Personal Grooming, Symbolic and Free Time. In the last study, 144 students evaluated the relationship between the categories of the objects and the extended self and attachment. The results showed that the residents’ representative objects were part of their extended self more than the level of attachment attributed to these objects.
