A High-altitude Balloon Platform for Exploring the Terrestrial Carbon Cycle
Carbon dioxide uptake by plants is a major component of the global carbon cycle that can be affected by climate change. This experiment quantifies the rate of landscape exchange of CO2 in the time between a high altitude balloon’s ascent and descent. It was hypothesized that measured seasonal trends would match a predicted trend of spring and fall release and summer uptake showing that the high altitude balloon method was a valid method. This was supported by the collected data where three flights showed landscape uptake, seven flights showed release and four showed no net exchange
Contribution to the bryoflora of Australia, V. Radula tonitrua sp. nov. from Queensland
Further study of the two geographic lineages within Radula novae-hollandiae sens. lat. have resulted in the detection of morphological differences among individuals from the Queensland Wet Tropics, and those from New South Wales. Individuals from the Wet Tropics have perianths that are shorter at maturity (1.6-2.0 v. 3.8-4.4 mm), leaf lobes that usually bear numerous marginal gemmae, and leaf-lobules that are smaller and more quadrate. The morphological differences, particularly in perianth length, were not fully appreciated previously and provide evidence supporting the recognition of the Queensland Wet Tropics lineage as a distinct and new species, Radula tonitrua, which is here described. The degree of phylogenetic divergence and fixed molecular difference between R. tonitrua and R. novae-hollandiae, are comparable with the separation observed between R. ocellata and R. pulchella, another species pair exhibiting the same geographic disjunction
Cost that is Directly Incurred as a Result of Operating the Train Service on the 1520 mm Rail with Primarily Freight Transportation
AbstractUnder the Directive 2012/34/EU (21 November 2012) “the charges for … [rail] infrastructure … shall be set at the cost that is directly incurred as a result of operating the train service”. This charging rule is new for Baltic States’ railways, where due to the favorable geographic position a full cost application without detalization was possible. Although, a big number of relevant studies on the issue was made in EU, all of them covered only 1435mm railways with primarily passenger transportation. This study has been made in order to understand the impact of train operating on 1520mm rail infrastructure with primarily freight transportation.A gradual model of infrastructure charging process in the Baltic States rail networks has been introduced as a result of this study

Anisotropy, Transport, and Spin-Phonon Interplay in Insulating Magnets
Insulating magnets are a diverse platform for uniquely quantum behavior and the realization of novel cooperative spin states with exotic magnetic and topological excitations. In addition to fundamental interest, such materials have many potential technological applications, from spintronic sensing devices to the next generation of solid-state memory storage and even crucial roles in quantum information processing. The bulk magnetic and thermal properties of these materials are a product of the complex interplay of many interacting spin, orbit, and lattice degrees of freedom on an atomic scale, thus experimental probes that can dissect these microscopic details and recognize new phenomena are highly desirable. This thesis provides an overview of magnetism, thermal transport theory and experimentation, and high-field resonant torsion magnetometry techniques for a wide range of unconventional quantum magnets. We focus on two particular insulating magnets, CrCl3 and CsYbSe2, each of which exemplifies distinct mechanisms of spin-phonon interaction that are manifest in the anisotropic, field-dependent behavior of their respective thermal conductivity tensors. Our work develops new tools to advance the understanding of spin-phonon interactions, and the identification of truly exotic spin states of matter in these, and many other insulating systems.</p

They remained relatively unchanged with relatively low evolution rates (and are thus often called a „conservative“ plant group), but could successfully establish themselves in an always varying environment from Devonian swamps to Permian forests, Mesozoic deserts and as epiphytes in Tertiary rainforests. They are not eaten by snails or insects, and are resistant against fungi and bacteria
Nuevos registros de Hepáticas y Anthocerotófitas para Panamá
Twenty eight hepatics and eight hornwort species are reported as new to Panama. Data on their habitat, local and general distribution and are included. One species, Cololejeunea panamensis G. Dauphin & Pócs is described as new to science. A new combination, Megaceros canaliculatus (Pagán) Shaw & Renzaglia, corr. et emend. J. C. Vill. & Salazar Allen, is proposed. Eight further hepatic records from the literature have been added. This raises the total number of hepatics reported from Panama to 325 species in 100 genera and 28 families
Use of Concept Lattices for Data Tables with Different Types of Attributes
In this paper we describe the application of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) for analysis of data tables with different types of attributes. FCA represents one of the conceptual data mining methods. The main limitation of FCA in classical case is the exclusive usage of binary attributes. More complex attributes then should be converted into binary tables. In our approach, called Generalized One-Sided Concept Lattices, we provide a method which deal with different types of attributes (e.g., ordinal, nominal, etc.) within one data table. Therefore, this method allows to create same FCA-based output in form of concept lattice with the precise many-valued attributes and the same interpretation of concept hierarchy as in the classical FCA, without the need for specific unified preprocessing of attribute values
