    Confidentiality and public protection: ethical dilemmas in qualitative research with adult male sex offenders

    This paper considers the ethical tensions present when engaging in in-depth interviews with convicted sex offenders. Many of the issues described below are similar to those found in other sensitive areas of research. However, confidentiality and public protection are matters that require detailed consideration when the desire to know more about men who have committed serious and harmful offences is set against the possibility of a researcher not disclosing previously unknown sensitive information that relates to the risk of someone being harmed.</p

    Sensor based corrosion condition monitoring of coating substrate system informed by fracture mechanics, electrochemistry and heat transfer concepts

    This research investigates delamination and blistering as coating failure mechanisms due to corrosive diffusing species, residual and thermal stresses. Several mathematical models to include environmental variables as temperature, humidity ratio and atmospheric constituents have been developed and reported. During this study various coating failures have been analysed through a combination of electrochemistry, fracture mechanics and heat transfer concepts. This approach enabled the development of comprehensive mathematical models for the prediction and prognoses of coating failures applied to high value assets. The formation of blister and its propagation due to diffusion of corrosive species was investigated. Fracture mechanics concepts were utilised to study the initiation and propagation of a circular blister as an interfacial crack under the coupling affects of compressive and diffusion induced stresses along with heat transfer due to pressure gradient at the interface of coating substrate system. The direction of blister propagation was defined through a mathematical model with blister radius r and radial angle Ξ as initial defining parameters. Experimental work was conducted to assess the influence of varying temperatures, humidity ratios and environmental pollutants as SO2 and salt particles to investigate corrosion failures. Live condition monitoring techniques were developed to assess corrosion rate with respect to large vehicles operation frequencies to study the effects of changing environments. Three years of real time data consisted of 150K data points was acquired for investigating corrosion failures with or without coatings. Both experimental and simulation data was compared to predictive and prognostics models. There is excellent agreement between experimental and simulation results to be applied for live corrosion condition monitoring of large high value assets.     Dissociation spectrum of H2+_2^+ from a short, intense infrared laser pulse: vibration structure and focal volume effects

    The dissociation spectrum of the hydrogen molecular ion by short intense pulses of infrared light is calculated. The time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation is discretized and integrated in position and momentum space. For few-cycle pulses one can resolve vibrational structure that commonly arises in the experimental preparation of the molecular ion from the neutral molecule. We calculate the corresponding energy spectrum and analyze the dependence on the pulse time-delay, pulse length, and intensity of the laser for λ∌790\lambda \sim 790nm. We conclude that the proton spectrum is a both a sensitive probe of the vibrational dynamics and the laser pulse. Finally we compare our results with recent measurements of the proton spectrum for 55 fs pulses using a Ti:Sapphire laser (λ∌790\lambda \sim 790 nm). Integrating over the laser focal volume, for the intensity I∌3×1015I \sim 3 \times 10^{15}W cm−2^{-2}, we find our results are in excellent agreement with these experiments.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, preprin

    Psychosocial outcomes of an inclusive adapted sport and adventurous training course for military personnel.

    PURPOSE: To explore the psychosocial outcomes of an inclusive adapted sport and adventurous training course that aims to support the rehabilitation and personal development of military personnel who have sustained physical and/or psychological disability. METHOD: Narrative life story interviews were conducted with 11 men aged 20-43 taking part in one of the 5-day courses. A thematic narrative analysis was conducted, focusing on accounts that provided insights into personally meaningful psychosocial outcomes of the course. FINDINGS: We identified six themes, falling into two distinct clusters. "Bringing me back to myself" was achieved through the themes of (1) returning to activity, (2) rediscovering a sense of purpose, and (3) reconnecting to others. "New rooms to explore" was realised through (4) experiencing new activities, (5) being valued/respected/cared for and (6) being inspired by other people. CONCLUSION: Involvement in the course stimulated a balance of present- and future-oriented psychosocial outcomes through which participants both recreated aspects of themselves that had been lost through injury/trauma and moved forward with their lives as a result of new horizons of possibility. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: This 5-day inclusive adapted sport and adventurous training course offered meaningful psychosocial outcomes among military personnel who had experienced physical and/or psychological disability. The course helped participants recover aspects of their previous life and self through becoming physically active again, rediscovering a sense of purpose and reconnecting to others. Participants describe a broadening of life horizons as a result of the course, through new activities, being valued/respected/cared for, and being inspired by other people

    Stories of success: Cultural narratives and personal stories of elite and professional athletes

    Using a narrative methodology to explore the stories Olympic and elite athletes tell about success, we identified three alternatives to the dominant conception of success as the achievement of performance outcomes. In these alternatives, success is storied as: (1) ‘I did the best that I could’ – a controllable and sustainable story of effort and application; (2) ‘It’s the closest thing you can get to flying’ – a story where success relates to embodied experience and discovery; (3) ‘People I made the journey with’ – which prioritises relationships and connection between people. We reflect on three key insights: (1) success is a multidimensional concept, broader than the singular conception encapsulated within the dominant performance narrative; (2) through various narrative strategies, experienced athletes resist cultural pressures towards a singular conception of success; (3) for long-term performance and well-being, it is necessary to work towards multiple forms of success over time and across contexts

    Data from the Einstein Observatory imaging proportional counter (IPC) and high resolution imager (HRI) were released on several CD-ROM sets. The sets released so far include pointed IPC and HRI observations in both simple image and detailed photon event list format, as well as the IPC slew survey. With the data on these CD-ROMS's the user can perform spatial analysis (e.g., surface brightness distributions), spectral analysis (with the IPC event lists), and timing analysis (with the IPC and HRI event lists). The next CD-ROM set will contain IPC unscreened data, allowing the user to perform custom screening to recover, for instance, data during times of lost aspect data or high particle background rates

    Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) seeds darken rapidly and phenolic content falls when stored at higher temperature, moisture and light intensity

    Faba beans cv. Fiesta with seed moisture content (SMC) modified to 8, 10, 12 and 14% were packed in polyethylene lined aluminium foil bags and stored at 5, 15, 20, 25, 30, 37, 45, 50 or 60 C ( 2 C) for one year. Samples were analysed for moisture content and seed coat (testa) colour over the storage period using a chroma meter. A continuous increase in L* and b* values was found in all samples with the passage of time whereas a *values first increased and then decreased in samples stored at relatively high temperatures (= 37 C). The initial beige testa colour changed to light brown, dark reddish brown or almost black depending on storage conditions. The higher the temperature and SMC the faster the rate of change in colour (E ab* values). Seeds with 8% SMC had more stable testa colour compared to seeds with higher SMC. Exposure to artificial light (350 mol m -2 s -1) substantially accelerated the colour darkening. Cotyledon stored at 37+2 C also darkened with the storage time. A loss in total free phenolics, total tannins and proanthocyanidins was found with increased darkness of testa and cotyledons during storage
