Direct observation of twist mode in electroconvection in I52
I report on the direct observation of a uniform twist mode of the director
field in electroconvection in I52. Recent theoretical work suggests that such a
uniform twist mode of the director field is responsible for a number of
secondary bifurcations in both electroconvection and thermal convection in
nematics. I show here evidence that the proposed mechanisms are consistent with
being the source of the previously reported SO2 state of electroconvection in
I52. The same mechanisms also contribute to a tertiary Hopf bifurcation that I
observe in electroconvection in I52. There are quantitative differences between
the experiment and calculations that only include the twist mode. These
differences suggest that a complete description must include effects described
by the weak-electrolyte model of electroconvection
The QUEST RR Lyrae Survey II: The Halo Overdensities in the First Catalog
The first catalog of the RR Lyrae stars (RRLS) in the Galactic halo by the
QUEST Survey has been searched for significant overdensities that may be debris
from disrupted dwarf galaxies or globular clusters. Away from the major
overdensities, the distribution of these stars is adequately fit by a smooth
halo model, in which the flattening of the halo decreases with increasing
galactocentric distance (Preston et al 1991). This model was used to estimate
the ``background'' of RRLS on which the halo overdensities are overlaid. A
procedure was developed for recognizing groups of stars that constitute
significant overdensities with respect to this background. To test this
procedure, a Monte Carlo routine was used to make artificial RRLS surveys that
follow the smooth halo model, but with Poisson distributed noise in the numbers
of RRLS and, within limits, random variations in the positions and magnitudes
of the artificial stars. The artificial surveys created by this routine were
examined for significant groups in exactly the same way as the QUEST survey.
These calculations provided estimates of the frequencies with which random
fluctuations produce significant groups. In the QUEST survey, there are six
significant overdensities that contain six or more stars and several smaller
ones. The small ones and possibly one or two of the larger ones may be
artifacts of statistical fluctuations, and they need to be confirmed by
measurements of radial velocity and/or proper motion. The most prominent groups
are the northern stream from the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy and a
large group in Virgo. Two other groups lie in the direction of the Monoceros
stream and at approximately the right distance for membership. Another group is

Does STAT5a Have an Effect on BMAL1 Levels in Mammary Epithelial Cells?
The mammary gland is a very important organ for reproduction in mammals because it produces milk which serves as the primary source of nutrients for newly-born offspring. Previous studies suggest that its development is regulated by circadian clocks, biochemical oscillators that generate circadian rhythms (the bodyâs internal clock). The circadian system plays a major role in homeostasis, coordinating the bodyâs internal physiology and synchronizing it with the external environment. Our lab showed that levels of the BMAL1 protein, a core clock component, increased in the mammary gland at the onset of lactation. Treatment of mammary epithelial cells (HC11) with the hormone prolactin significantly increased BMAL1 levels. We hypothesize that the secretion of prolactin during lactogenesis induces expression of BMAL1 in the mouse mammary gland through the STAT5a signaling pathway. The objective of the project was to determine the effect of different amounts of STAT5a protein on BMAL1 levels with and without prolactin treatment. For this experiment, western blot analysis was used to measure STAT5a and BMAL1 levels in wild type HC11 cells and in HC11 cell lines that were genetically modified to: 1) express very high levels of STAT5a (STAT5a-OE), 2) express a mutant form of STAT5a that is inactive (STAT5a-dnl), and 3) delete the BMAL1 gene (BMAL1 KO). Our first round of analysis showed that overexpressing STAT5a increased BMAL1 protein levels, especially in cells differentiated by prolactin. Results from this experiment would allow us to better understand the relationship between mammary gland development and the circadian system
Detection of anomalous Hall voltages in ultrahigh-mobility two-dimensional hole gases generated by optical spin orientation
By combining optical spin orientation and an externally applied longitudinal electric field, transverse charge accumulation has been detected in very high-mobility two-dimensional hole gases by measuring the transverse voltage drop across simple Hall devices. Our results indicate intrinsic band-structure (rather than extrinsic skew scattering) derived spin-orbit coupling as the underlying mechanism of this spin-polarized transport effect.This work was supported by the EPSRC.This is the author accepted manuscript. Proper Motions in the Galactic Bulge: Plaut's Window
A proper motion study of a field of 20' x 20' inside Plaut's low extinction
window (l,b)=(0 deg,-8 deg), has been completed. Relative proper motions and
photographic BV photometry have been derived for ~21,000 stars reaching to
V~20.5 mag, based on the astrometric reduction of 43 photographic plates,
spanning over 21 years of epoch difference. Proper motion errors are typically
1 mas/yr and field dependent systematics are below 0.2 mas/yr.
Cross-referencing with the 2MASS catalog yielded a sample of ~8,700 stars, from
which predominantly disk and bulge subsamples were selected photometrically
from the JH color-magnitude diagram. The two samples exhibited different
proper-motion distributions, with the disk displaying the expected reflex solar
motion as a function of magnitude. Galactic rotation was also detected for
stars between ~2 and ~3 kpc from us. The bulge sample, represented by red
giants, has an intrinsic proper motion dispersion of (sigma_l,sigma_b)=(3.39,
2.91)+/-(0.11,0.09) mas/yr, which is in good agreement with previous results,
and indicates a velocity anisotropy consistent with either rotational
broadening or tri-axiality. A mean distance of 6.37^{+0.87}_{-0.77} kpc has
been estimated for the bulge sample, based on the observed K magnitude of the
horizontal branch red clump. The metallicity [M/H] distribution was also
obtained for a subsample of 60 bulge giants stars, based on calibrated
photometric indices. The observed [M/H] shows a peak value at [M/H]~-0.1 with
an extended metal poor tail and around 30% of the stars with supersolar
metallicity. No change in proper motion dispersion was observed as a function
of [M/H]. We are currently in the process of obtaining CCD UBVRI photometry for

Electron-phonon scattering at the intersection of two Landau levels
We predict a double-resonant feature in the magnetic field dependence of the
phonon-mediated longitudinal conductivity of a two-subband
quasi-two-dimensional electron system in a quantizing magnetic field. The two
sharp peaks in appear when the energy separation between two
Landau levels belonging to different size-quantization subbands is favorable
for acoustic-phonon transitions. One-phonon and two-phonon mechanisms of
electron conductivity are calculated and mutually compared. The phonon-mediated
interaction between the intersecting Landau levels is considered and no avoided
crossing is found at thermal equilibrium.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
Three-dimensional pattern formation, multiple homogeneous soft modes, and nonlinear dielectric electroconvection
Patterns forming spontaneously in extended, three-dimensional, dissipative
systems are likely to excite several homogeneous soft modes (
hydrodynamic modes) of the underlying physical system, much more than quasi
one- and two-dimensional patterns are. The reason is the lack of damping
boundaries. This paper compares two analytic techniques to derive the patten
dynamics from hydrodynamics, which are usually equivalent but lead to different
results when applied to multiple homogeneous soft modes. Dielectric
electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals is introduced as a model for
three-dimensional pattern formation. The 3D pattern dynamics including soft
modes are derived. For slabs of large but finite thickness the description is
reduced further to a two-dimensional one. It is argued that the range of
validity of 2D descriptions is limited to a very small region above threshold.
The transition from 2D to 3D pattern dynamics is discussed. Experimentally
testable predictions for the stable range of ideal patterns and the electric
Nusselt numbers are made. For most results analytic approximations in terms of

Left hepatic lobe herniation through an incisional anterior abdominal wall hernia and right adrenal myelolipoma: a case report and review of the literature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Herniation of the liver through an anterior abdominal wall hernia defect is rare. To the best of our knowledge, only three cases have been described in the literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 70-year-old Mexican woman presented with a one-week history of right upper quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice to our Department of General Surgery. Her medical history included an open cholecystectomy from 20 years earlier and excessive weight. She presented with jaundice, abdominal distension with a midline surgical scar, right upper quadrant tenderness, and a large midline abdominal wall defect with dullness upon percussion and protrusion of a large, tender, and firm mass. The results of laboratory tests were suggestive of cholestasis. Ultrasound revealed choledocholithiasis. A computed tomography scan showed a protrusion of the left hepatic lobe through the anterior abdominal wall defect and a well-defined, soft tissue density lesion in the right adrenal topography. An endoscopic common bile duct stone extraction was unsuccessful. During surgery, the right adrenal tumor was resected first. The hernia was approached through a median supraumbilical incision; the totality of the left lobe was protruding through the abdominal wall defect, and once the lobe was reduced to its normal position, a common bile duct surgical exploration with multiple stone extraction was performed. Finally, the abdominal wall was reconstructed. Histopathology revealed an adrenal myelolipoma. Six months after the operation, our patient remains in good health.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The case of liver herniation through an incisional anterior abdominal wall hernia in this report represents, to the best of our knowledge, the fourth such case reported in the literature. The rarity of this medical entity makes it almost impossible to specifically describe predisposing risk factors for liver herniation. Obesity, the right adrenal myelolipoma mass effect, and the previous abdominal surgery are likely to have contributed to incisional hernia formation.</p
Spelling-to-sound correspondences affect acronym recognition processes
A large body of research has examined the factors which affect the speed with which words are recognised in lexical decision tasks. Nothing has yet been reported concerning the important factors in differentiating acronyms (e.g. BBC, HIV, NASA) from non-words. It appears that this task poses little problem for skilled readers, in spite of the fact that acronyms have uncommon, even illegal, spellings in English. We used regression techniques to examine the role of a number of lexical and non-lexical variables known to be important in word processing in relation to lexical decision for acronym targets. Findings indicated that acronym recognition is affected by age of acquisition and imageability. In a departure from findings in word recognition,acronym recognition was not affected by frequency. Lexical decision responses for acronyms were also affected by the relationship between spelling and sound - a pattern not usually observed in word recognition. We argue that the complexity of acronym recognition means that the process draws phonological information in addition to
semantics
