We prove several explicit formulae for the nn-th Bernoulli polynomial Bn(x)B_{n}(x), in which Bn(x)B_{n}(x) is equal to an affine combination of the polynomials (x1)n(x-1)^{n}, (x2)n(x-2)^{n}, ldotsldots, (xk1)n(x-k-1)^{n}, where kk is any fixed positive integer greater or equal than nn

Carbon and nitrogen mineralization of organic wastes from sugarcane distilleries: vinasse and yeast waste

    Get PDF
RAMIRAN International ConferenceIn Madeira Island (Portugal) significant amounts of wastes are generated in sugarcane distilleries, namely vinasse (the remaining fermented must after distillation) and yeast waste (the yeast surplus produced during the alcoholic fermentation). These wastes have high organic loads and low pH, leading to serious environmental problems when released directly into natural watercourses or when poorly managed (Hati et al., 2007). As a solution to avoid expensive treatments, both wastes have been used as soil amendment, since they contain important amounts of plant nutrients and organic matter (Resende et al., 2006; Parnaudeau et al., 2008). Indeed, application to soils of vinasse is a common practice in sugarcane cultivated areas and can fully substitute K and partially P on crops fertilization. Nevertheless, additional mineral nitrogen fertilization is needed when vinasse is spread in the soils (Junior et al., 2007; Oliveira et al., 2009). On the other hand, yeast waste has been considered as an excellent potential source of nitrogen for plant nutrition when applied to soils (Rezende et al., 2004). Thus, combined application of both wastes should ensure a more balanced supply of nutrients to plants. However, scarce information is available on the combine use of both wastes as fertilizer. The main objective of this study is to assess the effect of the combined application to soil of both organic materials (vinasse and yeast waste), and to evaluate its subsequent effects on nitrogen mineralization/immobilization process to supply nitrogen to crops and to preserve/restore soil carbon

Current pear pruning making use of pneumatic shears still is a very labour intensive operation. The Proder project “Avaliação da poda mecânica em pomares de pera” was designed to contribute to solutions that would reduce the present dependence in labour and therefore to promote a reduction in pruning costs. This paper shows the results of a trial made to evaluate the influence of mechanical topping in manual pruning complement field work and pear yield. Topping was performed using a Reynolds 6DT 3.0m cutting bar with six hydraulic-driven circular disc-saws mounted in the three point tractor linkage system. The field trial was performed in a commercial orchard with 20 years, planted in an array of 4m x 2m with tree lines oriented in North-South direction. Trees were trained as the central leader system. In this trial, in a randomised complete block design with four replications, two treatments are being compared leading to 8 plots with one line of 14 trees per plot. The treatments tests were: T1 - manual pruning performed by workers using pneumatic shears, in each year; T2 - Topping the canopy parallel to the ground, using a discs-saw pruning machine mounted in a front loader of an agricultural tractor, followed by manual pruning complement performed by workers with pneumatic shears. Tree height and width was measured, before and after pruning. Work was timed and pear yields evaluated. Mechanical topping seems to be effective in the control of tree height, which can contribute to increase 14% of work rates on manual pruning complement. No significant differences in pear yield were found between treatments

On Hirschman and log-Sobolev inequalities in mu-deformed Segal-Bargmann analysis

We consider a deformation of Segal-Bargmann space and its transform. We study L^p properties of this transform and obtain entropy-entropy inequalities (Hirschman) and entropy-energy inequalities (log-Sobolev) that generalize the corresponding known results in the undeformed theory.Comment: 42 pages, 3 figure

Neurolymphomatosis as primary presentation of extra-nodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type

    Get PDF
Neurolymphomatosis (NL) describes an infiltration of cranial and peripheral nerves by lymphoma cells, most frequently in non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma. This clinical entity is rare and poses a challenging diagnosis. We describe a case of a 64-year-old female patient with NL associated with extra-nodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL), nasal type, presenting as a painful progressive mononeuropathy multiplex with an oral cavity lesion. ENKTL is usually associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and rarely affects the central and peripheral nervous system. Lumbar puncture, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nerve biopsy, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) help to establish the diagnosis. Thereby, NL should be considered in the differential diagnosis of painful progressive multiple neuropathies, even in patients without previous history of cancer.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Shift-Symmetric Configurations in Two-Dimensional Cellular Automata: Irreversibility, Insolvability, and Enumeration

The search for symmetry as an unusual yet profoundly appealing phenomenon, and the origin of regular, repeating configuration patterns have long been a central focus of complexity science and physics. To better grasp and understand symmetry of configurations in decentralized toroidal architectures, we employ group-theoretic methods, which allow us to identify and enumerate these inputs, and argue about irreversible system behaviors with undesired effects on many computational problems. The concept of so-called configuration shift-symmetry is applied to two-dimensional cellular automata as an ideal model of computation. Regardless of the transition function, the results show the universal insolvability of crucial distributed tasks, such as leader election, pattern recognition, hashing, and encryption. By using compact enumeration formulas and bounding the number of shift-symmetric configurations for a given lattice size, we efficiently calculate the probability of a configuration being shift-symmetric for a uniform or density-uniform distribution. Further, we devise an algorithm detecting the presence of shift-symmetry in a configuration. Given the resource constraints, the enumeration and probability formulas can directly help to lower the minimal expected error and provide recommendations for system's size and initialization. Besides cellular automata, the shift-symmetry analysis can be used to study the non-linear behavior in various synchronous rule-based systems that include inference engines, Boolean networks, neural networks, and systolic arrays.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 2 appendice

Small-scale fisheries access to fishing opportunities in the European Union: is the common fisheries policy the right step to SDG14b?

    Get PDF
The profile of small-scale fisheries has been raised through a dedicated target within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG14b) that calls for the provision of ‘access of small-scale artisanal fishers to marine resources and markets’. By focusing on access to fisheries resources in the context of European Union, in this article we demonstrate that the potential for small-scale fishing sectors to benefit from fishing opportunities remains low due to different mechanisms at play including legislative gaps in the Common Fisheries Policy, and long-existing local structures somewhat favouring the status quo of distributive injustice. Consequently, those without access to capital and authority are faced by marginalizing allocation systems, impacting the overall resilience of fishing communities. Achieving SDG14b requires an overhaul in the promulgation of policies emanating from the present nested governance systems.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
