This report discusses the history and profit motive behind Smith & Wesson's introduction into the civilian market of its M&P15 semiautomatic assault rifles in 2006. It then explains the history, distinguishing features, and lethal capabilities of assault rifles like the M&P15

The Effects of a Reduced Force Aerial Bucket Control on Upper Extremity Muscular Demands as Assessed with Surface Electromyography

A common control for operating aerial bucket trucks for utility companies in North America is called a pistol grip control. Based upon many anecdotal reports of forearm muscle fatigue from workers using this control, Prof. Richard Marklin began an EPRI-sponsored study in 2016 using EMG to determine muscle fatigue of workers while they used the pistol grip. Muscle activity recorded by EMG is a measure of the magnitude of muscle force under controlled conditions. This study confirmed the reports of muscle fatigue in extensor digitorum communis (EDC) muscle in the right forearm. The next phase of the study was to design and build a self-contained, battery-powered replacement for the pistol grip that could reduce the required input force and therefore muscle fatigue in the EDC. This new design is called the reduced-force pistol grip. The reduced-force pistol grip was then tested in a 20-participant laboratory study using EMG to quantify the reduction in muscle fatigue of the right arm. This laboratory study showed that there was a decrease in muscle activity of the right EDC while using the reduced force (50% reduced force) pistol grip as compared to a conventional force pistol grip currently used on utility trucks. The results of the truck to line full trials, which are the most representative of actual movements of the pistol grip in the field, showed that the reduction of 50% required input force produced a meaningful reduction in muscle activity of 5.6%. EMG results provide evidence that the reduced force pistol grip decreases the risk of muscle fatigue of line workers who operate the pistol grip. EMG results also corroborate reports of muscle fatigue from utility line workers who operate the pistol grip with conventional force levels. This study was the first to quantify muscular loading of an aerial bucket pistol grip control and results of the redesigned pistol grip show promise for improving the occupational health of electric utility line workers

    Zero torque gear head wrench

    Get PDF
A gear head wrench particularly suited for use in applying torque to bolts without transferring torsional stress to bolt-receiving structures is introduced. The wrench is characterized by a coupling including a socket, for connecting a bolt head with a torque multiplying gear train, provided within a housing having an annulus concentrically related to the socket and adapted to be coupled with a spacer interposed between the bolt head and the juxtaposed surface of the bolt-receiving structure for applying a balancing counter-torque to the spacer as torque is applied to the bolt head whereby the bolt-receiving structure is substantially isolated from torsional stress. As a result of the foregoing, the operator of the wrench is substantially isolated from any forces which may be imposed

The awesome power of a military convoy in Vietnam can also be a danger. Articles, stories, and other compositions in this archive were written by participants in the Mighty Pen Project. The program, developed by author David L. Robbins, and in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University and the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond, Virginia, offers veterans and their family members a customized twelve-week writing class, free of charge. The program encourages, supports, and assists participants in sharing their stories and experiences of military experience so both writer and audience may benefit

Postmortem glycolytic metabousm in the skeletal muscles of anaesthetised and stunned Boer goats, Capra hircus

    Get PDF
The rates of postmortem glycolysis in several muscles of halothane anaesthetised and captive-bolt stunned Boer goats were measured at 37°C. The muscles examined were the M. semitendinosus, the M. Psoas major and the M. longissimus dorsi at the thoracic and lumbu regions. It is shown that captive-bolt stunning does not produce a very rapid postmortem glycolysis in the skeletal musculature. Initial pH values in the M. semitendinosus. M. psoas major and M. longissimus dorsi of the stunned animals were in the region of 6,8 compared with an initial value of 7,1 in the anaesthetised animals. pH1 values in the muscles of the stunned goats were about 6,6 and the pH was still above 6,0 at four hours postmortem The M. longissimus dorsi was less affected by stunning than either the M. psoas major or the M. semitendinosus. Data on the levels of ATP. phosphocreatine and glucose-6-phosphate in the same muscles are also presented, and are related to the fibre type of the muscles as determined by succinic dehydrogenase histochemistry. The results are contrasted with previously published data which showed that captivebolt stunning has a detrimental effect on the meat quality of the muscles of the pig

The problem of this research is that short distance sprint (100 m) of male students of FIK UNP Padang is influenced by their speed reaction and explosive power either partially or simultaneously. The amount of the population was 415 students in academic year of 2004. to run it well, the researcher used proportional stratified Random Sampling to which the students of the same level was grouped by 25% of which. According to the exist data that there were 92 students could be analyzed. The instruments used were: (1) measuring the Speed Reaction. As the result, the rank of validity of the test in for the Reliability of the test was 0,84; (2) Standing Broad Jump Test of which the Explosive Power was measured. The result of this test showed the validity of 0,61 and the Reliability was 0,96; (3) Sprint 100 m test used stopwatch for measured the 100 m Run Achievement. From this research the correlations found were: (1) There was a significant correlation between the Speed Reaction with 100 m Run Achievement: (2) There was a significant correlation between the Explosive Power with the 100 m Run Achievement; (3) There was a signficant correlation among the Speed Reaction and the Explosive Power with the 100 m Run Achievement
