Far right: the significance of an umbrella concept
This contribution makes the case for a shift in boundaries between the (populist) radical right and the extreme right, arguing for the systematic use of the term âfar rightâ. The significance of a deliberately generic but fundamentally meaningful concept such as âfar rightâ is motivated by the growing links between illiberal-democratic (âradical rightâ) and anti-democratic (âextreme rightâ) collective actors. This begs considering the conceptual grounds for differentiation among far-right collective actors, their underlying dynamics, and why it is important to look at what they do to tackle this phenomenon in practiceâthat is, to extrapolate their ideological essence and their varying allegiances to democracy. The complexity of far-right politics questions the long-standing conceptual distinctions internally defining it. The use of an umbrella concept may thus enhance precision in the discussion of this phenomenon, at the same time highlighting the unfolding of a new phase in nativist politics
LDL-C: Lower is Better for Longer - Even at Low Risk
Background: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) causes atherosclerotic disease, as demonstrated in experimental and epidemiological cohorts, randomised controlled trials, and Mendelian randomisation studies.
Main text: There is considerable inconsistency between existing guidelines as to how to effectively manage patients at low overall risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) who have persistently elevated levels of LDL-C.
We propose a step-by-step practical approach for the management of cardiovascular risks in individuals with low (â140âmg/dL, 3.6âmmol/L) LDL-C. The strategy proposed is based on the level of adherence to lifestyle interventions (LSI), and in case of non-adherence, stepwise practical management, including lipid-lowering therapy, is recommended to achieve a target LDL-C levels (<â115âmg/dL, 3.0âmmol/L).
Conclusions: Further studies are necessary to answer the questions on the long-term efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the suggested approach. This is critical, considering the ever-increasing numbers of such low-risk patients seen in clinical practice
Complete elimination of 1K Pot vibrations in dilution refrigerators
Cryogenic vibrations generated by continuously filled 1K Pots are a well known source of noise in all cryogenic experiments using dilution refrigerators. Starting from recent developments we realized a non invasive modification to the cryostat that completely eliminated vibrations, thermalizing the helium coming from the main bath at the pot temperature. Forging, bending, and breaking: Enacting the âilliberal playbookâ in Hungary and Poland
In recent years, Central and Eastern Europe have furnished several examples of illiberalism in power. The most prominent and consequential cases are Fidesz, which has ruled in Hungary since 2010, and Law and Justice (PiS), which has ruled in Poland since 2015. In both cases, illiberal governments have embarked upon an extensive project of political reform aimed at dismantling the liberal-democratic order. We examine the nature, scope, and consequences of these processes of autocratisation. We first argue that illiberal changes are ideologically founded and identify how both populism and nativism figure in the policymaking of illiberals in power. We then show how these practices emerge from a common âilliberal playbookââa paradigm of policy change comprising forms of forging, bending, and breakingâand elaborate on the notion that illiberal governments are using legalism to kill liberalism. The fine-grained approach that we employ allows us to distinguish between different rationales and gradations of illiberal policymaking, and assess their implications for the rule of law, executive power, and civil rights and freedoms.In recent years, Central and Eastern Europe have furnished several examples of illiberalism in power. Spin-wave propagation in a microstructured magnonic crystal
Transmission of microwave spin waves through a microstructured magnonic
crystal in the form of a permalloy waveguide of a periodically varying width
was studied experimentally and theoretically. The spin wave characteristics
were measured by spatially-resolved Brillouin light scattering microscopy. A
rejection frequency band was clearly observed. The band gap frequency was
controlled by the applied magnetic field. The measured spin-wave intensity as a
function of frequency and propagation distance is in good agreement with a

Scintillating double beta decay bolometers
We present the results obtained in the development of scintillating Double
Beta Decay bolometers. Several Mo and Cd based crystals were tested with the
bolometric technique. The scintillation light was measured through a second
independent bolometer. A 140 g CdWO_4 crystal was run in a 417 h live time
measurement. Thanks to the scintillation light, the alpha background is easily
discriminated resulting in zero counts above the 2615 keV gamma line of
Thallium 208. These results, combined with an extremely easy light detector
operation, represent the first tangible proof demonstrating the feasibility of
