Quantum Hall Systems: Braid groups, composite fermions, and fractional charge
The book presents the wide range of topics in two-dimensional physics of
quantum Hall systems, especially fractional quantum Hall states. It starts with
the fundamental problems of quantum statistics in two dimensions and the
corresponding braid group formalism. The braid group formalism of anyons
(previously known) is developed for composite fermions. The main formalism used
in many-body quantum Hall theories -- the Chern-Simons theory is also
presented. The Chern-Simons theory of anyons (particles obeying fractional
statistics) and composite fermions (related to Hall systems) is given, in
detail. Numerical studies, which play the important role in quantum Hall
theories, are presented for spherical systems (Haldane sphere). The composite
fermion theory is tested in numerical studies. The concept of the hierarchy of
condensed states of composite fermion excitations is introduced (in analogy to
the Haldane hierarchy)1). The hierarchies of odd-denominator states and
even-denominator states are presented. The BCS paired Hall state is also
discussed. The introduction into multi-component quantum Hall systems and spin
quantum Hall systems is sketched.

Exclusion Statistics of Quasiparticles in Condensed States of Composite Fermion Excitations
The exclusion statistics of quasiparticles is found at any level of the
hierarchy of condensed states of composite fermion excitations (for which
experimental indications have recently been found). The hierarchy of condensed
states of excitations in boson Jain states is introduced and the statistics of
quasiparticles is found. The quantum Hall states of charged -anyons
( -- the exclusion statistics parameter) can be described as
incompressible states of -anyons ( -- an even number).Comment: 4 page
Electrolytic copper as cheap and effective catalyst for one-pot triazole synthesis
Electrolytic copper is a well-known form of pure, oxygen free copper that is used for industrial
applications. In this work, the catalytic potential of this relatively cheap material was studied. The
addition of less than 0.015 mol equivalent of copper powder effectively catalysed the one-pot synthesis
of triazoles from a diverse range of organic halides and alkynes. Quantitative conversions in aqueous
solvents can be achieved within minutes. The heterogenous nature of the catalyst afforded a low level
of copper contamination in the products, thus meeting the rigorous criteria of the pharmaceutical
industry
Influence of uniaxial pressure on dielectric properties of (1-x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–xSrTiO3 for x = 0.01, 0.04, and 0.1 ceramics
The publication costs of this article were covered by the Estonian Academy of Sciences and the University of Tartu. The conventional solid-state sintering was applied to synthesized (1-x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-xSrTiO3 (x = 0.01, 0.04, and 0.1) ceramics. Dielectric measurements of these ceramics were taken in the temperature range from 20 to 600 °C, in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 2 MHz and under uniaxial pressure ranging from 10 to 1100 bar. The study of the dielectric behaviour showed that the influence of uniaxial pressure on the investigated properties was considerable. The peaks εm gradually decreased and shifted towards lower temperatures with an increase of uniaxial pressure for all samples. The first effect developed with an increase of the strontium ion concentration. Experimental results revealed most interesting properties of the material in the context of its potential applications.Center of Excellence has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme H2020-WIDESPREAD-01-2016-2017-TeamingPhase2 under grant agreement No. 739508, project CAMART
A Study of Catalytic Oxidation of a Library of C2 to C4 Alcohols in the Presence of Nanogold
The classical stoichiometric oxidation of alcohols is an important tool in contemporary
organic chemistry. However, it still requires huge modifications in order to comply with the principles
of green chemistry. The use of toxic chemicals, hazardous organic solvents, and the large amounts
of toxic wastes that result from the reactions are a few examples of the problems that must be
solved. Nanogold alone or conjugated with palladium were supported on different carriers (SiO2, C)
and investigated in order to evaluate their catalytic potential for environmentally friendly alcohol
oxidation under solvent-free and base-free conditions in the presence H2O2 as a clean oxidant.
We tested different levels of Au loading (0.1–1.2% wt.) and different active catalytic site forms
(monometallic Au or bimetallic Au–Pd sites). This provided new insights on how the structure of the
Au-dispersions affected their catalytic performance. Importantly, the examination of the catalytic
performance of the resulting catalysts was oriented toward a broad scope of alcohols, including those
that are the most resistant to oxidation—the primary aliphatic alcohols. Surprisingly, the studies
proved that Au/SiO2 at a level of Au loading as low as 0.1% wt. appeared to be efficient and
prospective catalytic system for the green oxidation of alcohol. Most importantly, the results revealed
that 0.1% Au/SiO2 might be the catalyst of choice with a wide scope of utility in the green oxidation
of various structurally different alcohols as well as the non-activated aliphatic ones

Effect of Drought and Heavy Metal Contamination on Growth and Photosynthesis of Silver Birch Trees Growing on Post-Industrial Heaps
Silver birch trees (Betula pendula Roth) are a pioneering species in post-industrial habitats,
and have been associated with an expansive breeding strategy and low habitat requirements. We
conducted ecophysiological and dendroclimatological studies to check whether there are any features
of which the modification enables birch trees to colonise extreme habitats successfully. We characterised
the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus, the gas exchange, the content of pigments in
leaves, and the growth (leaf thickness and tree-ring width) of birch trees on a post-coal mine heap,
a post-smelter heap, and a reference site. Birch growth was limited mainly by temperature and water
availability during summer, and the leaves of the birch growing on post-industrial heaps were significantly
thicker than the reference leaves. Moreover, birch trees growing on heaps were characterised by
a significantly higher content of flavonols and anthocyanins in leaves and higher non-photochemical
quenching. In addition, birches growing on the post-coal mine heap accumulated a concentration of
Mn in their leaves, which is highly toxic for most plant species. Increasing the thickness of leaves,
and the content of flavonols and anthocyanins, as well as efficient non-photochemical quenching
seem to be important features that improve the colonization of extreme habitats by birches
Temperature and E-Poling Evolution of Structural, Vibrational, Dielectric, and Ferroelectric Properties of Ba1−xSrxTiO3 Ceramics (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.45)
Poland’s high-performance computing infrastructure PLGrid (HPC Centers: ACK Cyfronet AGH) for providing computer facilities and support within computational grant no. PLG/2022/015969. Innovative research and scientific platform for a new class of nanocomposites, financed by the Ministry of Education and Science, contract number 7216/IA/SP/2021.Lead-free Ba1−xSrxTiO3 (BST) (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.45) ceramics were successfully prepared via the solid-state reaction route. A pure perovskite crystalline structure was identified for all compositions by X-ray diffraction analysis. The basic phase transition temperatures in these ceramics were studied over a wide temperature range. A change in symmetry from a tetragonal to cubic phase was detected, which was further proven by phonon anomalies in composition/temperature-dependent Raman spectra. The incorporation of Sr2+ into BaTiO3 (BT) lead to a shift in the phase transitions to lower temperatures, suppressing the ferroelectric properties and inducing relaxor-like behavior. Therefore, it was reasonable to suppose that the materials progressively lack long-range ordering. The initial second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements demonstrated that the cubic phase of BST ceramics is not purely centrosymmetric over a wide temperature interval. We discussed the possible origin of the observed effects, and showed that electric field poling seems to reconstruct the structural ordering destroyed by the introduction of Sr2+ to BT. In the first approximation, substitution of Sr for larger Ba simply reduced the space for the off-central shift in Ti in the lattice and hence the domain polarization. A-site cation ordering in BST and its influence on the density of electronic states were also explored. The effect of doping with strontium ions in the BST compound on the density of electronic states was investigated using ab initio methods. As the calculations showed, doping BT with Sr2+ atoms led to an increase in the bandgap. The proposed calculations will also be used in the subsequent search for materials optimal for applications in photovoltaics. --//-- This is an open access article Suchanicz, J.; Sitko, D.; Stanuch, K.; Świerczek, K.; Jagło, G.; Kruk, A.; Kluczewska-Chmielarz, K.; Konieczny, K.; Czaja, P.; Aleksandrowicz, J.; et al.
