Congruences and ideals on Boolean modules: a heterogeneous point of view

Definitions for heterogeneous congruences and heterogeneous ideals on a Boolean module M are given and the respective lattices CongM and IdeM are presented. A characterization of the simple Boolean modules is achieved differing from that given by Brink in a homogeneous approach. We construct the smallest and the greatest modular congruence having the same Boolean part. The same is established for modular ideals. The notions of kernel of a modular congruence and the congruence induced by a modular ideal are introduced to describe an isomorphism between CongM and IdeM. This isomorphism leads us to conclude that the class of the Boolean module is ideal determined

Callose synthase and xyloglucan endotransglucosylase gene expression over time in Citrus × clementina and Citrus × sinensis infected with citrus tristeza virus

Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is a virus that already caused great losses in citrus producing regions. The cell wall of plant cells plays an important role in the defence response to viruses. Following several studies indicating that cell wall enzyme transcripts of callose synthase 7 (calS7) and xyloglucan endotransglucosylase 9 (xth9) are modified during a viral infection, transcript expression of calS7 isoform x5 (calS7x5) and xth9 was evaluated over time in Citrus x sinensis 'Valencia Late' (VL) and Citrus x clementina 'Fina' (CL), infected with the severe CTV isolate T318A, by quantitative (q) PCR. qPCR analysis of healthy and CTV infected citrus was performed at 15 days, 10 months and at 31 months post-inoculation (dpi/mpi), respectively. The CTV titer, evaluated at the three time-points by qPCR, increased over time in bark tissues, with VL plants exhibiting a titer about 5 times higher than CL 31 mpi. CTV infection did not cause significant changes in calS7x5 gene expression over time in both citrus cultivars. However, CTV infection was associated with significant up-regulation of xth9 in VL compared to controls 31 mpi. This study highlights that CTV infection can affect the expression of specific cell wall-associated genes over time and that this influence was distinct for VL and CL. Career exploration in inmates: the importance of individual characteristics

Este estudo visa analisar as competências de exploração de carreira em adultos reclusos, em função de variáveis sociodemográficas. Nesse sentido, apresenta-se uma investigação com 58 reclusos, de um estabelecimento prisional de Portugal. Os resultados indicam que os reclusos se encontram numa situação, em geral, favorável à exploração vocacional. Verificam-se ainda diferenças estatisticamente significativas no Stresse em função do estado civil, e na Certeza de Resultados e na Exploração do Meio profissional, em função do nível de escolaridade. Conclui-se que o grande desafio para profissionais de aconselhamento vocacional é facilitar o bem-estar psicológico dos reclusos, ajudando-os a compreender a realidade e a enfrentar os desafios de viver e trabalhar em sociedade, após a reclusão.This study aims to analyze the vocational exploration competences in adult inmates according to sociodemographic variables. The participants of this study were 58 inmates of prison in Portugal. The results indicated that the inmates were in a situation favorable to the vocational exploration. Statistical significant differences were found in Stress according to the civil status and in Results Certainty and Professional Environment Exploration according to the academic degree. It is concluded that the major challenge for counseling professionals is to facilitate the well-being of inmates, helping them to understand the reality and face the challenges of living and working in society after the incarceration.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Gestores de Recursos Electrónicos: Que formação na era digital?

Neste artigo são apresentados os resultados e conclusões de um estudo efectuado na área da gestão de colecções digitais realizado no âmbito do trabalho de investigação da Tese de Mestrado em Estudos de Informação e Bibliotecas Digitais do primeiro autor. Este estudo teve como objectivo o conhecimento da opinião dos bibliotecários sobre a formação recebida relativamente ao manuseamento e disponibilização de recursos electrónicos, face à necessidade de novas competências, devido às mudanças dos procedimentos dos profissionais de informação com a incorporação de documentos em formato electrónico ou digital nas bibliotecas. As publicações digitais ou electrónicas vieram afectar todas as áreas da biblioteconomia, incluindo a gestão de colecções. As mudanças não se deram ao nível das tarefas efectuadas, mas sim ao nível dos procedimentos. As actividades dos bibliotecários estão a desenvolver-se, não em oposição às que já eram realizadas, mas adicionando-lhes novos componentes. Com a introdução de recursos electrónicos nas bibliotecas, as funções dos bibliotecários expandiram-se a domínios como o direito, a negociação e a informática. Por esse motivo a gestão dos recursos digitais implica novas competências, desde a negociação das licenças de utilização até à forma como os documentos digitais são disponibilizados. Com a rápida evolução das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), e constante introdução de novos suportes para disponibilização de conteúdos, a formação tem um papel crucial para a gestão de recursos electrónicos ou digitais. Prenylated chalcone 2 ccts as an antimitotic agent and enhances the chemosensitivity of tumor cells to paclitaxel

We previously reported that prenylated chalcone 2 (PC2), the O-prenyl derivative (2) of 2'-hydroxy-3,4,4',5,6'-pentamethoxychalcone (1), induced cytotoxicity of tumor cells via disruption of p53-MDM2 interaction. However, the cellular changes through which PC2 exerts its cytotoxic activity and its antitumor potential, remain to be addressed. In the present work, we aimed to (i) characterize the effect of PC2 on mitotic progression and the underlying mechanism; and to (ii) explore this information to evaluate its ability to sensitize tumor cells to paclitaxel in a combination regimen. PC2 was able to arrest breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 and non-small cell lung cancer NCI-H460 cells in mitosis. All mitosis-arrested cells showed collapsed mitotic spindles with randomly distributed chromosomes, and activated spindle assembly checkpoint. Live-cell imaging revealed that the compound induced a prolonged delay (up to 14 h) in mitosis, culminating in massive cell death by blebbing. Importantly, PC2 in combination with paclitaxel enhanced the effect on cell growth inhibition as determined by cell viability and proliferation assays. Our findings demonstrate that the cytotoxicity induced by PC2 is mediated through antimitotic activity as a result of mitotic spindle damage. The enhancement effects of PC2 on chemosensitivity of cancer cells to paclitaxel encourage further validation of the clinical potential of this combination

Contribution to the flora of the Selvagens archipelago (Portugal) (I)

Plant specimens obtained by the authors from several expeditions to the Selvagens Islands (2004-2021), complemented by the study of herbarium specimens, led to the identification of several new species records for the Selvagens archipelago, namely the taxa currently considered as Canary Islands endemics Trisetaria lapalmae and Polycarpaea divaricata. Other new taxa records for the Selvagens Islands include Convolvulus siculus subsp. elongatus and the grasses Bromus rigidus and Phalaris minor. Notes on Misopates salvagense, Asplenium marinum, Spergularia diandra and Rostraria pumila are also included. Comments on taxa include distribution, ecology, taxonomy, nomenclature, conservation, and historical data. Results are discussed in the light of habitat restoration, following Nicotiana glauca near eradication and rodent eradication. These aspects are also discussed considering the historical evolution of knowledge on the Selvagens vascular flora.Los ejemplares de plantas obtenidos por los autores en varias expediciones a las Islas Salvajes (2004-2021), complementados con el estudio de ejemplares de herbario, permitieron identificar varios registros de nuevas especies para el archipiélago de las Salvajes, concretamente los taxones considerados actualmente como endémicos del archipiélago Canario Trisetaria lapalmae y Polycarpaea divaricata. Otros nuevos registros son Convolvulus siculus subsp. elongatus y las gramíneas Bromus rigidus y Phalaris minor. También se incluyen notas sobre Misopates salvagense, Asplenium marinum, Spergularia diandra y Rostraria pumila. Los comentarios sobre los taxones incluyen distribución, ecología, taxonomía, nomenclatura, conservación y datos históricos. Los resultados se discuten a la luz de la restauración del hábitat, consecuencia de la casi erradicación de Nicotiana glauca y de la erradicación de roedores. Scaffolding strategies for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications

During the past two decades, tissue engineering and the regenerative medicine field have invested in the regeneration and reconstruction of pathologically altered tissues, such as cartilage, bone, skin, heart valves, nerves and tendons, and many others. The 3D structured scaffolds and hydrogels alone or combined with bioactive molecules or genes and cells are able to guide the development of functional engineered tissues, and provide mechanical support during in vivo implantation. Naturally derived and synthetic polymers, bioresorbable inorganic materials, and respective hybrids, and decellularized tissue have been considered as scaffolding biomaterials, owing to their boosted structural, mechanical, and biological properties. A diversity of biomaterials, current treatment strategies, and emergent technologies used for 3D scaffolds and hydrogel processing, and the tissue-specific considerations for scaffolding for Tissue engineering (TE) purposes are herein highlighted and discussed in depth. The newest procedures focusing on the 3D behavior and multi-cellular interactions of native tissues for further use for in vitro model processing are also outlined. Relatório de atividades

A União Europeia (UE) tem atualmente um importante e significativo impacto em diversos aspetos da vida dos cidadãos, a nível local, regional e nacional. No atual contexto europeu marcado por acontecimentos como o Brexit, a tentativa de integração de novos países ou o próprio questionamento civil da pertinência atual da UE, torna-se crucial a existência de espaços privilegiados de discussão e difusão de informação. A nível europeu, este ano de 2019 assumiu uma importância acrescida: não só se celebraram 20 anos de uma moeda comum, como também foi ano de eleições para o Parlamento Europeu. Não esqueçamos ainda que a 9 de maio se comemora o Dia da Europa. Para a Biblioteca da Universidade da Beira Interior tornou-se evidente a necessidade de elaborar um leque de atividades de forma a promover o debate com a comunidade académica e o público em geral sobre o futuro da UE. Usou-se ainda esta oportunidade para fortalecer os contactos com as diferentes Faculdades, Centros, Serviços, docentes, investigadores e Núcleos de alunos da UBI de forma a constituir uma equipa multidisciplinar que pudesse dar resposta a diferentes necessidades da comunidade académica e da comunidade em geral em assuntos relacionados com a UE. Foram ainda estabelecidos contactos com diferentes organismos e entidades oficiais nacionais e europeias de forma a analisar e alargar formas de cooperação interinstitucional. O presente relatório visa dar conta, de forma resumida, das iniciativas levadas a cabo pela Biblioteca da UBI.N/
