Path Clustering: Grouping in a Efficient Way Complex Data Distributions

    Get PDF
This work proposes an algorithm that uses paths based on tile segmentation to build complex clusters. After allocating data items (points) to geometric shapes in tile format, the complexity of our algorithm is related to the number of tiles instead of the number of points. The main novelty is the way our algorithm goes through the grids, saving time and providing good results. It does not demand any configuration parameters from users, making easier to use than other strategies. Besides, the algorithm does not create overlapping clusters, which simplifies the interpretation of results

Signal Transmission Across Tile Assemblies: 3D Static Tiles Simulate Active Self-Assembly by 2D Signal-Passing Tiles

The 2-Handed Assembly Model (2HAM) is a tile-based self-assembly model in which, typically beginning from single tiles, arbitrarily large aggregations of static tiles combine in pairs to form structures. The Signal-passing Tile Assembly Model (STAM) is an extension of the 2HAM in which the tiles are dynamically changing components which are able to alter their binding domains as they bind together. For our first result, we demonstrate useful techniques and transformations for converting an arbitrarily complex STAM+^+ tile set into an STAM+^+ tile set where every tile has a constant, low amount of complexity, in terms of the number and types of ``signals'' they can send, with a trade off in scale factor. Using these simplifications, we prove that for each temperature Ď„>1\tau>1 there exists a 3D tile set in the 2HAM which is intrinsically universal for the class of all 2D STAM+^+ systems at temperature Ď„\tau (where the STAM+^+ does not make use of the STAM's power of glue deactivation and assembly breaking, as the tile components of the 2HAM are static and unable to change or break bonds). This means that there is a single tile set UU in the 3D 2HAM which can, for an arbitrarily complex STAM+^+ system SS, be configured with a single input configuration which causes UU to exactly simulate SS at a scale factor dependent upon SS. Furthermore, this simulation uses only two planes of the third dimension. This implies that there exists a 3D tile set at temperature 22 in the 2HAM which is intrinsically universal for the class of all 2D STAM+^+ systems at temperature 11. Moreover, we show that for each temperature Ď„>1\tau>1 there exists an STAM+^+ tile set which is intrinsically universal for the class of all 2D STAM+^+ systems at temperature Ď„\tau, including the case where Ď„=1\tau = 1.Comment: A condensed version of this paper will appear in a special issue of Natural Computing for papers from DNA 19. Interdependent network reciprocity in evolutionary games

    Get PDF
Besides the structure of interactions within networks, also the interactions between networks are of the outmost importance. We therefore study the outcome of the public goods game on two interdependent networks that are connected by means of a utility function, which determines how payoffs on both networks jointly influence the success of players in each individual network. We show that an unbiased coupling allows the spontaneous emergence of interdependent network reciprocity, which is capable to maintain healthy levels of public cooperation even in extremely adverse conditions. The mechanism, however, requires simultaneous formation of correlated cooperator clusters on both networks. If this does not emerge or if the coordination process is disturbed, network reciprocity fails, resulting in the total collapse of cooperation. Network interdependence can thus be exploited effectively to promote cooperation past the limits imposed by isolated networks, but only if the coordination between the interdependent networks is not disturbe

Extracting actionable knowledge to increase business utility in sport services

    Get PDF
The increase in retention of customer in gyms and health clubs is nowadays a challenge that requires concrete and personalized actions. Traditional data mining studies focused essentially on predictive analytics, neglecting the business domain. This work presents an actionable knowledge discovery system which uses the following pipeline (data collection, predictive model, loyalty actions). In the first step, it extracts and transforms existing real data from databases of the sports facilities. In a second step, predictive models are applied to identify user profiles more susceptible to dropout. Actionable rules are generated based on actionable attributes that should be avoided, in order to increase retention. Finally, in the third step, based on the previous actionable knowledge, experimental planning is carried out, with test and control groups, in order to find the best loyalty actions for customer retention. This document presents a simulation and the measure of the business utility of an actions sequence to avoid dropout.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Can serious games help to mitigate climate change? Exploring their influence on Spanish and American teenagers’ attitudes

    Get PDF
There is an urgent need to curb emissions and mitigate climate change, and this fight requires a change in teenagers’ attitudes. In search of new approaches targeting youth, online games are seen as a promising tool for communication and education. Using the serious game 2020 Energy as a case study, the main objective of this paper is to examine the influence of the game on Spanish and American teenagers’ attitudes (N = 108), employing a pretest-posttest design with an experimental condition (playing the game) and a control condition (not playing the game). Results show that there have not been statistically significant differences after playing the game, although when looking closer at each factor, some positive consequences can be found.HUM466 Acceso y evaluación de la información científic

Wisdom of groups promotes cooperation in evolutionary social dilemmas

    Get PDF
Whether or not to change strategy depends not only on the personal success of each individual, but also on the success of others. Using this as motivation, we study the evolution of cooperation in games that describe social dilemmas, where the propensity to adopt a different strategy depends both on individual fitness as well as on the strategies of neighbors. Regardless of whether the evolutionary process is governed by pairwise or group interactions, we show that plugging into the "wisdom of groups" strongly promotes cooperative behavior. The more the wider knowledge is taken into account the more the evolution of defectors is impaired. We explain this by revealing a dynamically decelerated invasion process, by means of which interfaces separating different domains remain smooth and defectors therefore become unable to efficiently invade cooperators. This in turn invigorates spatial reciprocity and establishes decentralized decision making as very beneficial for resolving social dilemmas.Comment: 8 two-column pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in Scientific Report
