Transitioning to Civilian Life
Every military personnel will eventually leave the service for civilian life. Their success is largely attributed to preparation. In order to be prepared a service member needs to be well informed about the services offered to them. My capstone project aims to provide service members with this information in a clear and concise manner. Utilizing research and military experience I will compile a booklet that will allow transitioning service members to be better informed. A survey will be used to obtain quantifiable data to better understand the capstones impact on my intended audience
NGOs and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Case Study of Haiti
This thesis examines the roles played by Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) in addressing the broad issue of poverty and development by focusing on the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. A new and intricate interplay of the profit, public, and non-profit sectors has arisen as the importance of NGOs has grown throughout the Global South. NGOs, now at the heart of economic development in LAC, are actors in what has been called a global civil society and have demonstrated an immense breadth of specified knowledge and adaptability. The main objective of the paper is to explore whether, and to what extent, NGOs can strengthen the capacity of states to effectively and fairly govern, and promote sustainable development. What can NGOs do to improve states in Latin America and the Caribbean? NGOs are placed within the progressive spectrum of development, while uncovering the need for a balanced approach to the complex topic of development. Consequently, NGOs carrying out capacity building objectives can be seen to support the involvement of local actors and communities while serving as interlocutors between the state and civil society. Haiti is used as a case study because it provides a unique and extreme example of the role that NGOs can play in promoting the public sector

The research was developed through the Supervised Professional Exercise
(EPS) carried out in the Nueva Esmeralda farm in the San Mauricio, Santo Domingo,
Suchitepéquez subdivision and as a general objective was to evaluate miticides for
the control of the red spider T. urticae in the crop. of banana M. x paradisiaca.
In order to achieve the objectives, field data collection, interviews, cabinet
information collection were carried out and immersion in the field was essential to
obtain the results presented in this investigation.
The Nueva Esmeralda farm requested to analyze the behavior of the red spider
T. urticae, because it is a pest that is affecting the banana crop M. x paradisiaca,
therefore in this investigation the following objectives were set to counteract the
damage from the same; evaluate acaricides for the control of the red spider plague
T. urticae in the cultivation of M. x paradisiaca; compare the climatic variables
temperature and relative humidity that influence the population of red spider T.
urticae; to evaluate the efficiency of the acaricides for the control of the red spider
mite T. urticae under controlled conditions and to compare the variable cost of the
acaricides in banana M. x paradisiaca
Light therapy for seasonal affective disorder with blue narrow-band light-emitting diodes (LEDs)
Background: While light has proven an effective treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), an optimal wavelength combination has not been determined. Short wavelength light (blue) has demonstrated potency as a stimulus for acute melatonin suppression and circadian phase shifting.
Methods: This study tested the efficacy of short wavelength light therapy for SAD. Blue light emitting diode (LED) units produced 468 nm light at 607 µW/cm2 (27 nm half-peak bandwidth); dim red LED units provided 654 nm at 34 µW/cm2 (21 nm half-peak bandwidth). Patients with major depression with a seasonal pattern, a score of ≥20 on the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-SAD version (SIGH-SAD) and normal sleeping patterns (routine bedtimes between 10:00 pm and midnight) received 45 minutes of morning light treatment daily for 3 weeks. Twenty-four patients completed treatment following random assignment of condition (blue vs. red light). The SIGH-SAD was administered weekly.
Results: Mixed-effects analyses of covariance determined that the short wavelength light treatment decreased SIGH-SAD scores significantly more than the dimmer red light condition (F = 6.45, p = .019 for average over the post-treatment times).
Conclusions: Narrow bandwidth blue light at 607 µW/cm2 outperforms dimmer red light in reversing symptoms of major depression with a seasonal pattern
