    Similar Effects of 24 Weeks of Resistance Training Performed with Different Frequencies on Muscle Strength, Muscle Mass, and Muscle Quality in Older Women

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of 24 weeks of resistance training (RT) performed 2 vs. 3 times per week on muscle strength, muscle mass, and muscle quality in older women. Thirty-nine older women (≥ 60 years old) were randomly assigned to two groups according to RT frequency (G2x = two sessions per week, n=19; and G3x = three sessions per week, n=20) and were submitted to 24 weeks of whole-body RT, divided into two stages of 12 weeks. In the first stage, participants performed 1 set of 10 to 15 repetitions in each of eight exercise, whereas in the second stage, they performed 2 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions. Muscle strength was assessed by one repetition maximum (1RM) tests in chest press, knee extension, and biceps preacher curl, while the lean soft tissue was estimated by DXA. The muscle quality index was determined by the ratio between strength and lean soft tissue. There were observed similar increases between groups for muscle strength (G2x=19.5%; G3x=22.2%), lean soft tissue (G2x=3.0%; G3x=1.6%), and muscle quality index (G2x=16.0%; G3x=21.1%). These results indicate that RT-induced muscular adaptation occurs regardless of training twice or thrice a week in older women. Instructors, coaches and practitioners can choose their training frequency preference, since both frequencies provided similar adaptations

    Virulence-associated trimeric autotransporters of Haemophilus parasuis are antigenic proteins expressed in vivo

    Glässer’s disease is a re-emerging swine disease characterized by a severe septicaemia. Vaccination has been widely used to control the disease, although there is a lack of extended cross-protection. Trimeric autotransporters, a family of surface exposed proteins implicated in host-pathogen interactions, are good vaccine candidates. Members of this family have been described in Haemophilus parasuis and designated as virulence-associated trimeric autotransporters (VtaA). In this work, we produced 15 recombinant VtaA passenger domains and looked for the presence of antibodies directed against them in immune sera by immunoblotting. After infection with a subclinical dose of H. parasuis Nagasaki, an IgG mediated antibody response against 6 (VtaA1, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10) of the 13 VtaA of the Nagasaki strain was detected, indicating that they are expressed in vivo. IgA production against VtaA was detected in only one animal. VtaA were more likely to be late antigens when compared to early (Omp P5 and Omp P6) and late (YaeT) defined antigens. Antibody cross-reaction with two orthologs of Nagasaki’s VtaA5 and 6, VtaA15 and 16 of strain HP1319, was also detected. No antibodies against VtaA were detected in the sera of animals immunized with a bacterin of the Nagasaki strain, suggesting poor expression in the in vitro conditions used. Taken together, these results indicate that VtaA are good candidate immunogens that could be used to improve H. parasuis vaccines. However, their capacity to confer protective immunity needs to be further studied

    Impacto do estado nutricional na composição corporal e força muscular de idosas inseridas em um programa de treinamento com pesos

    O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o impacto do estado nutricional na composição corporal e força muscular de idosas inseridas em um programa de treinamento com pesos (TP). Quarenta e oito idosas foram divididas em três grupos: eutróficas (EUT, IMC ≤ 24,9 kg/m²), sobrepeso (SOB, IMC entre 25,0 e 29,9 kg/m²) e obesas (OBE, IMC ≥ 30,0 kg/m2). O TP foi realizado por 12 semanas, uma série de 10 a 15 repetições, oito exercícios, três sessões semanais. Avaliações da composição corporal (massa muscular, massa gorda e gordura de tronco), força e qualidade muscular foi realizado. Interação foi encontrada para a massa muscular onde o grupo EUT apresentaram efeito significativo (+ 4,0%) quando comparado ao SOB (+ 1,4%) e OBE (+ 1,4%). Efeito do tempo foi observado para a força muscular (EUT = + 10,6%, SOB = + 7,5% e OBE = + 11,0%), qualidade muscular (EUT = + 6,1%, SOB = + 6,3% e OBE = + 9,8%), gordura de tronco (EUT = - 3,3%, SOB = - 0,7% e OBE = - 0,7%) e massa gorda (EUT = - 3,0%, SOB = - 1,5% e OBE = - 0,5%). Os resultados sugerem que o TP é efetivo para a melhora da força, qualidade muscular, massa muscular, gordura de tronco e massa gorda de mulheres idosas, porém o estado nutricional pode ser determinante nas modificações da massa muscular

    Contribuições do Lesson Study para a formação inicial do professor que ensina Matemática: : uma metanálise dos trabalhos apresentados no I SILSEM

    This study aimed to identify the contributions of Lesson Study to the initial training of mathematics teachers. To do so, we chose to conduct a meta-analysis research (Fiorentini and Lorenzato, 2006), in which eight expanded abstracts were analyzed, resulting from completed and ongoing research, published in the Proceedings of the 1st International Seminar on Lesson Study in Mathematics Teaching (In Portuguese, I SILSEM), held in Brazil in May 2021. The study indicates that the researches adopted a qualitative and interpretative approach and considered as the main stages of Lesson Study: planning, teaching, observation, and analysis of lessons, with some of the latter being conducted during the pandemic period, which reshaped the experience of the stages with the support of communication technology resources, shared writing, and record keeping. In terms of results, it was evident that teachers under training, when engaging in collaborative work in lesson plan development, selection, creation, and proposition of exploratory tasks, curriculum guidance analysis, mathematical content study, lesson development, observation, lesson evaluation, and reflection on the entire process, produce essential knowledge for their professional practice. These results, documented in the 1st SILSEM, highlight the potential of Lesson Study for initial teacher training while reinforcing the need for further research and practices on this topic. Keywords: Initial Training. Teacher. Mathematics. Lesson Study.Este estudo teve o objetivo de identificar as contribuições do Lesson Study para a formação inicial do professor que ensina matemática. Para tanto, optou-se por realizar uma pesquisa do tipo metanálise, em que foram analisados oito resumos expandidos, resultantes de pesquisas concluídas e em desenvolvimento, publicadas nos Anais do I Seminário Internacional de Lesson Study no Ensino de Matemática (I SILSEM), realizado no Brasil em maio de 2021. O estudo indica que as pesquisas adotaram abordagem qualitativa e interpretativa e consideraram as principais etapas do Lesson Study: planejamento, ensino, observação e análise das aulas, sendo algumas realizadas durante o período da pandemia, o que reconfigurou a vivência das etapas com o apoio de recursos tecnológicos de comunicação, escrita compartilhada e registro da produção. Em termos de resultados, evidenciaram que os licenciandos, quando experimentam o trabalho colaborativo na elaboração de planos de aula, na seleção, criação e proposição de tarefas exploratórias, análise das orientações curriculares, estudo do conteúdo matemático, desenvolvimento, observação, avaliação de aulas e reflexão sobre todo o processo produzem conhecimentos essenciais a sua prática profissional. Esses resultados, registrados no I SILSEM, demarcam o potencial do Lesson Study para a formação inicial de professores, ao mesmo tempo em que reforçam a necessidade de mais pesquisas e práticas sobre esse tema
