    An Exploration of Ethically Challenging Situations Experienced by School Psychologists and Related Outcomes Associated with Those Experiences-A Mixed Methods Study

    This mixed-methods study followed an exploratory sequential methodology to study pressures placed upon school psychologists to engage in unethical practices and the outcomes associated with those experiences. The participants, 27 school psychologists from Pennsylvania, completed a questionnaire focused on the pressure to engage in unethical practices and related outcomes. Ten of those participants were selected for an interview that focused on administrative pressure related to the Social Justice Theory. Findings show that pressure to engage in unethical practice continues to be a problem in the field of school psychology and that school psychologists experience repercussions as a result of advocating on behalf of marginalized students. This research contributes to the literature on the pressure to engage in unethical practice, additional pressures related to Covid-19, and to the relatively new area of research involving Social Justice Theory as it applies to school psychology. Several recommendations applicable for school psychology training programs, school districts, and administrative training programs have also been provided.     An unknown poem by Adam Mickiewicz? A manuscript of poetic pieces from the first half of the nineteenth century at the Library of the Poznań Society of Friends of Arts and Sciences. A communiqué.

    The Library of the Poznań Society of Friends of Arts and Sciences has been recently enriched by the accession of the manuscript “Poetical texts from the first half of the nineteenth century”. The manuscript includes a number of patriotic poems put down in the manuscript between 1848-1849. The article provides information on the physical description of the manuscript item (its present shelf number being: rkp. 2112) and a detailed list of its contents. Individual works have been listed in alphabetical order according to the names of the authors, with annotations concerning first editions. The bulk of the poems included in the manuscript were published prior to their inclusion in the manuscript, some of them after the year 1849. At the present stage of the investigation, some of the poems have not been confirmed to have been published earlier. An anonumous 12-verse poem without a title, attached to the communique at full length, has been identified by the author of the article as a poem whose last four verses were published in 1881 in the book Kraków — Zagrzebiowi under the title W albumie księcia Golicyna by Adam Mickiewicz. The article is intended to stimulate those engaged in research of the history of literature in further investigations concerning the said collection of poems, in particular the last mentioned text

    The article attempts to show how certain ideas formulated several decades ago by Jerzy Łoś may be useful from the perspective of contemporary sociology.     Social Machines and Patterns of Natural Sciences: On Some Implications of Science and Technology Studies

    We propose new articulation of the differences between the natural sciences and the social sciences. Drawing on science and technology studies (STS) we reconstruct the organizational and cognitive mechanisms of a certain type of natural sciences, one which is referred as laboratory science or highconsensus, rapid discovery sciences. The key features of those sciences crucial for their cognitive and engineering success include: ' experimental reproduction of the studied phenomena in the laboratory; ' laboratory interventions and modifications of the phenomena thus evoked and broadly understood scientific 'tinkering'; ' attempts to transfer the artificial arrangements developed in laboratory to non-laboratory settings. The STS perspective not only helps us to explain the differences in status and effectiveness between the social sciences and the natural sciences. It also allows us to formulate certain generai recommendations for the development of the social sciences. We attempt to show that sociologists are able to implement engineering projects in certain domains of social reality, projects involving the creation of closed sociotechnical systems-analogous to the ones which are generated by natural laboratory sciences. We refer to those systems as'social machines' and the proposed research methodology is called'synthetic methodology'

    The scroll compressor with internal cooling system – conception and CFD analysis

    In the paper the new kind of a scroll compressor is analyzed. To satisfy the working conditions and high operational reliability of that system a geometry of the moving and fixed scrolls was modified. In the central parts of the scroll elements the special chambers were created and used as a space for internal cooling of compressed medium. For analyzing the thermal – flow processes in the working chamber the finite volume method was used and carried out in ANSYS CFX software. This paper describes the system, the applied moving boundaries, the initial conditions and the influence of the modified vanes shape on the output parameters. The results obtained for modified geometry were compared with the “classical” geometry for the same initial conditions

    Logic of Social Ontology and Łoś’s Operator

    In 1947 Jerzy Łoś proposed a positional logic based on the realization operator. We follow his work and present it in the context of fundamental challenges of sociology such as the complexity of social reality and reflexivity of social agents. The paper is an outline of the general concept, as it opens a discussion and sets ground for future elaborations. In this paper, we are considering the concept according to which the expressions put forward by Łoś’s system might be indexed not only by spatial and temporal variables, but also by social contexts. And as such Łoś’s system might be a significant improvement, a valuable addition for social simulations and computational sociology, which use multi-agent systems and agent-based modeling. We consider how Łoś’s operator might be useful for these disciplines, as it gives a chance to combine of formalization with the humanistic coefficient, which represents the issues of complexity and reflexivity of social agents

    The Scroll Compressor With Internal Cooling System In Cryogenics Applications

    In order to decrease the energy cost of a compression process the cooling system has to be applied. Based on the modified vanes geometry the new cooling system for the scroll machines was proposed. The distinctive trait of the new vane is a significant space where the cooling apparatus is possible to install. Applying internal cooling may contribute to decreasing outlet temperature thus increase the efficiency of the process. Based on the initial CFD results a large heat extraction scroll compressor prototype will be build and tested in cryogenics applications.     Development Of Numerical Modelling Of Isobutane Vapor Ejector

    Individual residential air conditioning consumes over 11% of electric energy used for household purposes. For buildings with applied central air conditioning systems it comprises a substantially larger share, even one-third of electric energy consumption. Moreover, air-conditioning creates two sources of environmental pollution: 1) direct emission of greenhouse gases, especially for working fluids belonging to HFC group, and 2) emission of the greenhouse gases during generation of electric power to drive the system. Both sources are contributing signicantly to the global warming effect. Additionally, with energy cost rising constantly, industry is looking for reduction of electric energy expenses as a means of lowering their ixed costs in order to stay competitive. Paper presents development of air-conditioning technology that reduces the greenhouse gases emission by using natural refrigerants and also dramatically reduces the need for the electric power. This is accomplished by using free or inexpensive low temperature heat source, either solar or waste heat, as the main source of energy instead of electricity by means of ejection systems. These systems can be thought as a real alternative to compression devices in air-conditioning technologies. Ejection system can effectively compete with absorption system under temperature of the motive heat source lower than 80°C. The paper deals with CFD numerical simulation along with experimental investigations carried out on a specially constructed prototype/stand for the case of isobutane as a working fluid under motive vapour temperature below 75°C. The numerical and experimental results of entrainment ratio were compared. A good accuracy between numerical and experimental results is observed. The divergent of the results are lower than 20% for tested series. The exemplary pressure and velocity field were presented.     Consumer society is usually the object of attacks within the social sciences — sometimes even vicious ones. In this text, a different vision of consumerism is presented. The authors, basing themselves on the concept of Gilles Lipovetsky, argue that consumer culture may be treated as a culture of freedom. They attempt to develop Lipovetsky's thesis, which links consumerism with fashion. The text's aim is thus to turn our attention to the subject of fashion as an important sociological category, particularly in connection with consumer society and freedom. The authors also strive to delineate the various possibilities that result from it, such as the idea that society based on fashion allows us to reformulate the classical opposition of tradition versus modernity

    Exposing the hidden vocal channel: Analysis of vocal expression

    This dissertation explored perception and modeling of human vocal expression, and began by asking what people heard in expressive speech. To address this fundamental question, clips from Shakespearian soliloquy and from the Library of Congress Veterans Oral History Collection were presented to Mechanical Turk workers (10 per clip); and the workers were asked to provide 1-3 keywords describing the vocal expression in the voice. The resulting keywords described prosody, voice quality, nonverbal quality, and emotion in the voice, along with the conversational style, and personal qualities attributed to the speaker. More than half of the keywords described emotion, and were wide-ranging and nuanced. In contrast, keywords describing prosody and voice quality reduced to a short list of frequently-repeating vocal elements. Given this description of perceived vocal expression, a 3-step process was used to model vocal qualities which listeners most frequently perceived. This process included 1) an interactive analysis across each condition to discover its distinguishing characteristics, 2) feature selection and evaluation via unequal variance sensitivity measurements and examination of means and 2-sigma variances across conditions, and 3) iterative, incremental classifier training and validation. The resulting models performed at 2-3.5 times chance. More importantly, the analysis revealed a continuum relationship across whispering, breathiness, modal speech, and resonance, and revealed multiple spectral sub-types of breathiness, modal speech, resonance, and creaky voice. Finally, latent semantic analysis (LSA) applied to the crowdsourced keyword descriptors enabled organic discovery of expressive dimensions present in each corpus, and revealed relationships among perceived voice qualities and emotions within each dimension and across the corpora. The resulting dimensional classifiers performed at up to 3 times chance, and a second study presented a dimensional analysis of laughter. This research produced a new way of exploring emotion in the voice, and of examining relationships among emotion, prosody, voice quality, conversation quality, personal quality, and other expressive vocal elements. For future work, this perception-grounded fusion of crowdsourcing and LSA technique can be applied to anything humans can describe, in any research domain
