    Triple correlation for detection of damage-related nonlinearities in composite structures

    Nonlinear effects in vibration responses are investigated for the undamaged composite plate and the composite plate with a delamination. The analysis is focused on higher harmonic generation in vibration responses for various excitation amplitude levels. This effect is investigated using the triple correlation technique. The dynamics of composite plate was modelled using two-dimensional finite elements and the classical lamination theory. The doubled-node approach was used to model delamination area. Mode shapes and natural frequencies were estimated based on numerical models. Next, the delamination divergence analysis was used to obtain relative displacements for delaminated plies. Experimental modal analysis test was carried out to verify the numerical models. The two strongest vibration modes as well as two vibration modes with the smallest and largest motion level of delaminated plies were selected for nonlinear vibration test. The Fisher criterion was employed to verify the effectiveness and confidence level of the proposed technique. The results show that the method can be used not only to reveal nonlinearities, but also to reliably detect impact damage in composites. These results are confirmed using the statistical analysis

    Analysis of elastic nonlinearity for impact damage detection in composite laminates

    This paper concerns the experimental analysis of nonlinear response features of a composite laminate plate for impact damage detection. The measurement procedure is based on the Scaling Subtraction Method (SSM) and consists in exciting the damaged specimen with two sinusoidal signals at different amplitude. The linearly rescaled response signal at low amplitude excitation is subtracted from the response at large amplitude excitation to extract the nonlinear signatures. The latter are analysed in the time domain to infer the presence of damage. Results are compared with frequency domain analyses using the nonlinear vibro-acoustic modulation technique (NWMS). Changes in amplitude and phase as well as modulation effects of the acquired responses are also monitored. Surface-bonded, low profile piezoceramic transducers are used for excitation and sensing. Both measurements techniques are applied to detect barely visible impact damage in laminate composite plate. Non-destructive penetrant-enhanced X-ray inspections are carried out to characterize the extent of internal damage.     Synthesis of Bis-Heterocyclic 1H-Imidazole 3-Oxides from 3-Oxido-1H-imidazole-4-carbohydrazides

    The reaction of 1H-imidazole-4-carbohydrazides 1, which are conveniently accessible by treatment of the corresponding esters with NH2NH2·H2O, with isothiocyanates in refluxing EtOH led to thiosemicarbazides (= hydrazinecarbothioamides) 4 in high yields (Scheme 2). Whereas 4 in boiling aqueous NaOH yielded 2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiones 5, the reaction in concentrated H2SO4 at room temperature gave 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amines 6. Similarly, the reaction of 1 with butyl isocyanate led to semicarbazides 7, which, under basic conditions, undergo cyclization to give 2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ones 8 (Scheme 3). Treatment of 1 with Ac2O yielded the diacylhydrazine derivatives 9 exclusively, and the alternative isomerization of 1 to imidazol-2-ones was not observed (Scheme 4). It is important to note that, in all these transformations, the imidazole N-oxide residue is retained. Furthermore, it was shown that imidazole N-oxides bearing a 1,2,4-triazole-3-thione or 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine moiety undergo the S-transfer reaction to give bis-heterocyclic 1H-imidazole-2-thiones 11 by treatment with 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-dithione (Scheme 5)

    The study of fermentation and brewing has a long history of pioneering discoveries that continue to influence modern industrial food production. Since then, numerous research endeavors have yielded conventional criteria that guide contemporary brewing practices. However, the intricate open challenges faced today necessitate a more exhaustive understanding of the process at the molecular scale. We have developed an ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometric analysis (FT-ICR-MS) of the brewing process that can rapidly and comprehensively resolve thousands of molecules. This approach allows us to track molecular fluctuation during brewing at the level of chemical compositions. Employing biological triplicates, our investigation of two brewing lines that are otherwise identical except for the malt used revealed over 8,000 molecular descriptors of the brewing process. Metabolite imprints of both the similarities and differences arising from deviating malting temperatures were visualized. Additionally, we translated traditional brewing attributes such as the EBC-value, free amino nitrogen, pH-value, and concentration curves of specific molecules, into highly correlative molecular patterns consisting of hundreds of metabolites. These in-depth molecular imprints provide a better understanding of the molecular circumstances leading to various changes throughout the brewing process. Such chemical maps go beyond the observation of traditional brewing attributes and are of great significance in the investigation strategies of current open challenges in brewing research. The molecular base of knowledge, along with advancements in technological and data integration schemes, can facilitate the efficient monitoring of brewing and other productions processes

    Real-world outcomes of sipuleucel-T treatment in PROCEED, a prospective registry of men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

    BackgroundThe large registry, PROVENGE Registry for the Observation, Collection, and Evaluation of Experience Data (PROCEED)(NCT01306890), evaluated sipuleucel-T immunotherapy for asymptomatic/minimally symptomatic metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).MethodsPROCEED enrolled patients with mCRPC receiving 3 biweekly sipuleucel-T infusions. Assessments included overall survival (OS), serious adverse events (SAEs), cerebrovascular events (CVEs), and anticancer interventions (ACIs). Follow-up was for ≥3 years or until death or study withdrawal.ResultsIn 2011-2017, 1976 patients were followed for 46.6 months (median). The median age was 72 years, and the baseline median prostate-specific antigen level was 15.0 ng/mL; 86.7% were white, and 11.6% were African American. Among the patients, 1902 had 1 or more sipuleucel-T infusions. The median OS was 30.7 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 28.6-32.2 months). Known prognostic factors were independently associated with OS in a multivariable analysis. Among the 1255 patients who died, 964 (76.8%) died of prostate cancer (PC) progression. The median time from the first infusion to PC death was 42.7 months (95% CI, 39.4-46.2 months). The incidence of sipuleucel-T-related SAEs was 3.9%. The incidence of CVEs was 2.8%, and the rate per 100 person-years was 1.2 (95% CI, 0.9-1.6). The CVE incidence among 11,972 patients with mCRPC from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare database was 2.8%; the rate per 100 person-years was 1.5 (95% CI, 1.4-1.7). One or more ACIs (abiraterone, enzalutamide, docetaxel, cabazitaxel, or radium 223) were received by 77.1% of the patients after sipuleucel-T; 32.5% and 17.4% of the patients experienced 1- and 2-year treatment-free intervals, respectively.ConclusionsPROCEED provides contemporary survival data for sipuleucel-T-treated men in a real-world setting of new life-prolonging agents, which will be useful in discussing treatment options with patients and in powering future trials with sipuleucel-T. The safety and tolerability of sipuleucel-T in PROCEED were consistent with previous findings

    47. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in first and second complete remission conditioned with fractionated total body irradiation and etoposide or cyclophosphamide

    Patients and methodsFrom 1993 to 2001 thirty two children underwent bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for ALL (12 in I CR and 20 in II CR after early BM or BM/organ relapse). Except 2 syngeneic all other were HLA-identical siblings transplants. All patients (pts) were conditioned with FTBI 2×1,5 Gy for 4 days (total dose 12 Gy) with lung shielding (9 Gy) and CY 60 mg/kg i.v for 2 days (total dose 120 mg/kg) (n=1 in I CR and n = 11 in II CR) or VP 60 mg/kg i.v (n = 11 in I CR and n = 9 in II CR), Pts in I CR have been given 1,1–4,9×108 MNC/kg (med. 2,7×108/kg), while pts in II CR 1,9–4,0×108 MNC/kg (med. 2,7×108/kg). For GvHD prevention CsA 3 mg/kg/d i.v was administered alone in 22 pts (n = 9 in I CR and n = 13 in II CR) or in combination with “short” MTX +/− PRED in 8 pts (n = 3 in I CR and n = 5 in II CR). Two pts transplanted with syngeneic BM received no GvHD prevention. Regimen related toxicity (RRT) was graded according to the system developed by Bearman et al. (1988).ResultsOnly mild or moderate expression of RRT was observed (GI toxicity, I°− 80%, II° −4%; stomatitis I° −40%, II° −20%; hepatic toxicity I°− 28%; renal, bladder and cardiac toxicity I°− 4%) and no transplant related deaths occured (TRM=0%). Among 12 pts transplanted in I CR only one child relapsed 4 months from BMT, while remaining 11 pts are alive in CCR with a median follow-up of 33months (range 6 to 66 months) and 92% probability of 5-year EFS. Of 20 children transplanted in II CR 6 relapsed 1–14 months from BMT (median 6,5 months). Fourteen of them remain in CCR with a median follow-up 19,5 months (range 1 to 96 months) and 66% probability of 8-year EFS.Conclusions1.In children with ALL the FTBI-12 Gy-containing regimen is well tolerated without the life-threatening toxic complications.2.FTBI-12 Gy-containing regimen demonstrates very good antileukemic efficacy for HR-ALL in I CR, but only limited for ALL in II CA.3.3. In context of good tolerance of FTBI in a total dose of 12 Gy and its limited antileukemic efficacy in children with ALL in II CR the escalation of FTBI total dose from 12 Gy to 13,2 Gy appears to be justified in those children.     Surge-type glaciers in the Tien Shan (Central Asia)

    Surge-Type glaciers have been observed in several mountain ranges of the world. Though Karakoram and Pamir are the hot spots for the occurrence of surge-Type glaciers in High Mountain Asia, few surge-Type glaciers also exist in Tien Shan. These have not been studied or reported in detail in the recent literature. We have identified 39 surge-Type glaciers and five tributary surges in Tien Shan either from available literature or by visual interpretation using available images from the period 1960 until 2014. Out of the 39 glaciers, 9 are confirmed as surge-Type, 13 are very probably surge-Type, and the remaining are possibly of surge-Type. Most of the surge-Type glaciers are located in Ak-Shiirak and Central Tien Shan. Compared with the normal glaciers of Tien Shan, the surge-Type glaciers are larger, cover higher ranges of elevations, and have shallower slopes. There is no significant difference in aspect. The largest surge events were observed in Central Tien Shan: North Inylchek Glacier (years 1996/1997) and Samoilowich Glacier (years 1992 until 2006) advanced several kilometers. The surge cycle was around 50 years for both of these glaciers. The advance was less pronounced for all other surge-Type glaciers during the period ca. 1960-2014. Some of the tributary glaciers behaved differently than the main glaciers in the sense that they continuously advanced during the entire period of our study, whereas the main glaciers have remained stable or retreated.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
