Antitrust and Regulation
Since the passage of the Interstate Commerce Act (1897) and the Sherman Act (1890), regulation and antitrust have operated as competing mechanisms to control competition. Regulation produced cross-subsidies and favors to special interests, but specified prices and rules of mandatory dealing. Antitrust promoted competition without favoring special interests, but couldn't formulate rules for particular industries. The deregulation movement reflected the relative competencies of antitrust and regulation. Antitrust and regulation can also be viewed as complements in which regulation and antitrust assign control of competition to courts and regulatory agencies based on their relative strengths. Antitrust also can act as a constraint on what regulators can do. This paper uses the game-theoretic framework of political bargaining and the historical record of antitrust and regulation to establish and illustrate these points.
\ud
Therapieziel sollte sein: die Restaurierung des .Penis.

Roadblocks to translational challenges on viral pathogenesis.
Distinct roadblocks prevent translating basic findings in viral pathogenesis into therapies and implementing potential solutions in the clinic. An ongoing partnership between the Volkswagen Foundation and Nature Medicine resulted in an interactive meeting in 2012, as part of the "Herrenhausen Symposia" series. Current challenges for various fields of viral research were recognized and discussed with a goal in mind--to identify solutions and propose an agenda to address the translational barriers. Here, some of the researchers who participated at the meeting provide a concise outlook at the most pressing unmet research and clinical needs, identifying these key obstacles is a necessary step towards the prevention and cure of human viral diseases
Fiscal policy in the context of varieties of capitalism
In the recent literature the impact of institutional variables on macroeconomic policy outcomes has been largely ignored. However one particular strand of the political economy has lately shed some light on the relationship between fiscal policy and its effects on economic growth by distinguishing the type of capitalism which characterizes developed countries. In this paper I will follow this so-called Varieties of Capitalism approach to examine the question, whether fiscal policy in liberal market economies is more effective than in non-liberal ones due to institutional complementarities. For this purpose I rely on a mixed-methodology, first using vector autoregressive models to determine fiscal multipliers across 19 OECD countries, before investigating by which institutional factors expansionary fiscal effects might be influenced. Indeed, significant difference in the size of the multiplier between the two production regimes can be found. However, the obtained results seem exactly to contradict my expectations
Figures of Chance and Contingency in Albert Kahn's Planetary Project
The Archives de la Planète is a collection of visual material – about 100 hours of film, 72000 autochromes and 4000 stereoscopic images – established between 1908 androughly 1932. While the project was of Kahn’s inspiration (and also financed by him),the human geographer Jean Brunhes served as its scientific director. Its purpose was to document the diversity, but even more so, the underlying unity of human life and activity all over the globe. It seems thus fitting that Brunhes used a cartographic logicin mapping the “positive facts” of his science, relying on visual documentation. Thisarticle examines some of the temporal complexities and contingencies of representation inherent in the autochrome part of the collections. As archives within the archive, they upset the cartographic logic of the project
