Cathodoluminescence-based nanoscopic thermometry in a lanthanide-doped phosphor
Crucial to analyze phenomena as varied as plasmonic hot spots and the spread
of cancer in living tissue, nanoscale thermometry is challenging: probes are
usually larger than the sample under study, and contact techniques may alter
the sample temperature itself. Many photostable nanomaterials whose
luminescence is temperature-dependent, such as lanthanide-doped phosphors, have
been shown to be good non-contact thermometric sensors when optically excited.
Using such nanomaterials, in this work we accomplished the key milestone of
enabling far-field thermometry with a spatial resolution that is not
diffraction-limited at readout.
We explore thermal effects on the cathodoluminescence of lanthanide-doped
NaYF nanoparticles. Whereas cathodoluminescence from such lanthanide-doped
nanomaterials has been previously observed, here we use quantitative features
of such emission for the first time towards an application beyond localization.
We demonstrate a thermometry scheme that is based on cathodoluminescence
lifetime changes as a function of temperature that achieves 30 mK
sensitivity in sub-m nanoparticle patches. The scheme is robust against
spurious effects related to electron beam radiation damage and optical
alignment fluctuations.
We foresee the potential of single nanoparticles, of sheets of nanoparticles,
and also of thin films of lanthanide-doped NaYF to yield temperature
information via cathodoluminescence changes when in the vicinity of a sample of
interest; the phosphor may even protect the sample from direct contact to
damaging electron beam radiation. Cathodoluminescence-based thermometry is thus
a valuable novel tool towards temperature monitoring at the nanoscale, with
broad applications including heat dissipation in miniaturized electronics and

Nonlinear Proportional Plus Integral Control of Optical Traps for Exogenous Force Estimation
This article explores nonlinear proportional plus integral (PI) feedback for controlling the position of an object held in an optical trap. In general, nonlinearities in the spatial dependence of the optical force complicate feedback control for optical traps. Nonlinear PI control has been shown to provide all of the benefits of integral control: disturbance rejection, servo tracking, and force estimation. The controller also linearizes the closed-loop system. More importantly, the nonlinear controller is shown to be equivalent to an estimator of the exogenous force. The ability of nonlinear PI control to lower the measurement SNR is evaluated and compared to the variational open-loop case. A simulation demonstrating the performance of the nonlinear PI control is presented
Podofilox-Induced Regression of Shope Papillomas May Be Independent of Host Immunity
We tested the hypothesis that infiltrating leukocytes might contribute to papilloma destruction following podofilox treatment. New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits were inoculated with cottontail rabbit papillomavirus (CRPV) onto abraded areas of the dorsal skin. At 21 d after viral inoculation, 5.0% podofilox solution was applied to some papillomas, whereas others were used as controls. Three rabbits were sacrificed at each of three different periods after treatment initiation (1, 4, and 7 d). Four monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs), RG-16 (for B cells), L11/135 (specific for T cells), 2C4 (specific for class II antigen), and Ki67 (specific for proliferating cells), were used in an immunohistochemical study. All positive cells and total cells in the field were counted with an ocular grid. After 1 d of treatment, proliferation of papilloma cells was strongly suppressed in treated papillomas, but leukocytic infiltration was not altered. At 4 d and 7 d of treatment, there were substantial increases (about two to three times) in the numbers of B and T cells and class II – expressing leukocytes. The upper layers of the papillomas were highly necrotic and cell proliferation was absent in an layers. These data support the view that podofilox has a direct toxic effect on papilloma tissue. Leukocyte infiltration is not strongly associated with papilloma tissue and may not contribute to papilloma destruction
Southern Massive Stars at High Angular Resolution: Observational Campaign and Companion Detection
Multiplicity is one of the most fundamental observable properties of massive
O-type stars and offers a promising way to discriminate between massive star
formation theories. Nevertheless, companions at separations between 1 and 100
mas remain mostly unknown due to intrinsic observational limitations. [...] The
Southern MAssive Stars at High angular resolution survey (SMASH+) was designed
to fill this gap by providing the first systematic interferometric survey of
Galactic massive stars. We observed 117 O-type stars with VLTI/PIONIER and 162
O-type stars with NACO/SAM, respectively probing the separation ranges 1-45 and
30-250mas and brightness contrasts of Delta H < 4 and Delta H < 5. Taking
advantage of NACO's field-of-view, we further uniformly searched for visual
companions in an 8''-radius down to Delta H = 8. This paper describes the
observations and data analysis, reports the discovery of almost 200 new
companions in the separation range from 1mas to 8'' and presents the catalog of
detections, including the first resolved measurements of over a dozen known
long-period spectroscopic binaries.
Excluding known runaway stars for which no companions are detected, 96
objects in our main sample (DEC < 0 deg; H<7.5) were observed both with PIONIER
and NACO/SAM. The fraction of these stars with at least one resolved companion
within 200mas is 0.53. Accounting for known but unresolved spectroscopic or
eclipsing companions, the multiplicity fraction at separation < 8'' increases
to f_m = 0.91 +/- 0.03. The fraction of luminosity class V stars that have a
bound companion reaches 100% at 30mas while their average number of physically
connected companions within 8'' is f_c = 2.2 +/- 0.3. This demonstrates that
massive stars form nearly exclusively in multiple systems. Additionally, the

Global Health Needs Modernized Containment Strategies to Prepare for the Next Pandemic
COVID-19 continues to be a public health crisis, while severely impacting global financial markets causing significant economic and social hardship. As with any emerging disease, pharmaceutical interventions required time, emphasizing the initial and continuing need for non-pharmaceutical interventions. We highlight the role of anthropological and historical perspectives to inform approaches to non-pharmaceutical interventions for future preparedness. The National Academy of Medicine, a not-for-profit, non-governmental US-based medical watchdog organization, published a key document early in the COVID-19 pandemic which points to inadequate quarantine and containment infrastructure as a significant obstacle to an effective pandemic response. In considering how to implement effective quarantine policies and infrastructure, we argue that it is essential to take a longitudinal approach to assess interventions that have been effective in past pandemics while simultaneously addressing and eliminating the negative socio-historical legacies of ineffective quarantine practices.
