    Effects of Australian Economic Activities on Waste Generation and Treatment

    Understanding the relationships between the Australian economic system and waste generation from intermediate sectors and households is a prerequisite for planning and implementing waste management strategies at a national scale. Data of waste generation accounts link to those of national economic accounts. However, in Australia, some years’ data are absent and so these links cannot be made. To rectify this data gap, this paper interpolates and extrapolates the Australian input-output table (IOT) of 2010–2011. Waste input-output (WIO) analysis is then used to assess the effects of the Australian economy on waste generation and treatment between 2009–2010 and 2010–2011. Analysis indicated that the result of interpolation was more reasonable than that of extrapolation, and the interpolation of the Australian IOT of 2010–2011 can be applicable. This comparative analysis of the time series data in WIO model has identified that: (1) per million $AUD of output of the Construction sector generated the most amount of direct and total waste during the period; (2) the relationships between the development of Australian economy and waste generation illustrate that the Australian economy is currently a traditional linear economy; (3) the effectiveness of waste-related policies are shown by the growth of the sums of direct and total effects of intermediate sectors on the Recovery sector; and (4) the amount of waste generated by households increased sharply over the two years. The physical flows of waste footprint show details of waste generation and treatment in the Australian economic system. The information provided in this paper is beneficial to formulate tailor-made policies for waste management in Australia

    Positive words carry less information than negative words

    We show that the frequency of word use is not only determined by the word length \cite{Zipf1935} and the average information content \cite{Piantadosi2011}, but also by its emotional content. We have analyzed three established lexica of affective word usage in English, German, and Spanish, to verify that these lexica have a neutral, unbiased, emotional content. Taking into account the frequency of word usage, we find that words with a positive emotional content are more frequently used. This lends support to Pollyanna hypothesis \cite{Boucher1969} that there should be a positive bias in human expression. We also find that negative words contain more information than positive words, as the informativeness of a word increases uniformly with its valence decrease. Our findings support earlier conjectures about (i) the relation between word frequency and information content, and (ii) the impact of positive emotions on communication and social links.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 3 table

    Generating synthetic rainfall on various timescales daily, monthly and yearly

    EXTENDED ABSTRACT The main objective of this paper is to present a model for generating synthetic rainfall totals on various timescales to be applicable for a variety of uses. Many large-scale ecological and water resources models require daily, monthly and yearly rainfall data as input to the model. As historical data provides only one realisation, synthetic generated rainfall totals are needed to assess the impact of rainfall variability on water resources systems A model for generating yearly totals will be described using traditional time series methods. This model, along with a similarly constructed daily generation model by, We present a new model for the generation of synthetic monthly rainfall data which we demonstrate for Parafield in Adelaide, South Australia. The rainfall for each month of the year is modelled as a non-negative random variable from a mixed distribution with either a zero outcome or a strictly positive outcome. We use maximum likelihood to find parameters for both the probability of a zero outcome and the gamma distribution that best matches the observed probability density for the strictly positive outcomes. We describe a new model that generates correlated monthly rainfall totals using a diagonal band copula with a single parameter to generate lag-1 correlated random numbers. Our model preserves the marginal monthly distributions and hence also preserves the monthly and yearly means. We show that for the particular example of Parafield the correlation between rainfall totals for successive months is not significant and so it is reasonable to assume independence. This is however not true for daily rainfall.     High-dose therapy and blood or marrow transplantation for non-Hodgkin lymphoma with central nervous system involvement

    AbstractThe role of autologous or allogeneic blood or marrow transplantation (BMT) remains undefined in patients with central nervous system (CNS) involvement by lymphoma. The records of all adult and pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients receiving BMT at Johns Hopkins from 1980 to 2003 were reviewed, and 37 patients were identified who had CNS involvement that was treated into remission by the time of BMT. The chief histologies were diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia. Twenty-four percent received intrathecal chemotherapy alone, and 70% received intrathecal chemotherapy and CNS irradiation before BMT. The main preparative regimens were cyclophosphamide/total body irradiation and busulfan/cyclophosphamide. Forty-one percent received an allogeneic transplant. Lymphoma relapsed after BMT in 14 patients (38%), and at least 5 had documented or suspected CNS relapse. In multivariate models, age ≥18 years at diagnosis, resistant systemic disease, busulfan/cyclophosphamide conditioning, and lack of intrathecal consolidation after BMT were statistically significant predictors of inferior survival. The 5-year actuarial event-free survival was 36%, and overall survival was 39%. After BMT, long-term survival is thus achievable in a subset of patients with a history of treated CNS involvement by non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The survival rates are not dissimilar to those typically seen in other high-risk lymphoma patients undergoing BMT. These data suggest that patients with lymphomatous involvement of the CNS who achieve CNS remission should be offered BMT if it is otherwise indicated

    Ammonia desorption chemical ionization of ether-linked phospholipids of the type 1-O-alkyl-2-O-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (platelet-activating factors) and a series of analogues revealed a systematic fragmentation pattern that is characteristic for these compounds. The predominant ions included the protonated molecular ion and a series of fragments derived from the molecular ion having the following nominal mass losses: MH-14, MH-42, MH-59, and MH-183. Deuterated ammonia was used to elucidate the nature of several fragments.     Combining genomics and epidemiology to track mumps virus transmission in the United States.

    Unusually large outbreaks of mumps across the United States in 2016 and 2017 raised questions about the extent of mumps circulation and the relationship between these and prior outbreaks. We paired epidemiological data from public health investigations with analysis of mumps virus whole genome sequences from 201 infected individuals, focusing on Massachusetts university communities. Our analysis suggests continuous, undetected circulation of mumps locally and nationally, including multiple independent introductions into Massachusetts and into individual communities. Despite the presence of these multiple mumps virus lineages, the genomic data show that one lineage has dominated in the US since at least 2006. Widespread transmission was surprising given high vaccination rates, but we found no genetic evidence that variants arising during this outbreak contributed to vaccine escape. Viral genomic data allowed us to reconstruct mumps transmission links not evident from epidemiological data or standard single-gene surveillance efforts and also revealed connections between apparently unrelated mumps outbreaks

    Experimental designs for phase I and phase I/II dose-finding studies

    We review the rationale behind the statistical design of dose-finding studies as used in phase I and phase I/II clinical trials. We underline what the objectives of such dose-finding studies should be and why the widely used standard design fails to meet any of these objectives. The standard design is a ‘memoryless' design and we discuss how this impacts on practical behaviour. Designs introduced over the last two decades can be viewed as designs with memory and we discuss how these designs are superior to memoryless designs. By superior we mean that they require less patients overall, less patients to attain the maximum tolerated dose (MTD), and concentrate a higher percentage of patients at and near to the MTD. We reanalyse some recently published studies in order to provide support to our contention that markedly better results could have been achieved had a design with memory been used instead of a memoryless design

    Binding and metabolism of platelet-activating factor by human neutrophils.

    Human polymorphonuclear neutrophils rapidly incorporated radiolabeled platelet-activating factor, 1-O-[hexadecyl-9, 10-3H2]-2-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine ([3H]PAF), and then metabolized it into its sn-2-fatty acyl derivative. Fractionation of radiolabel-pretreated cells over Percoll gradients revealed that virtually all of the intact [3H]PAF was located in nongranule membranes that were enriched with alkaline phosphatase and cell surface glycoproteins. While still membrane associated, the ligand was rapidly converted to its acyl derivative and then more slowly transferred to specific granules and, to a lesser extent, azurophilic granules. In contrast, neutrophils did not metabolize [3H]PAF at 4 degrees C but rather gradually accumulated it in their alkaline phosphatase-enriched membrane subfractions. These same subfractions contained receptors for the ligand, as determined by their capacity to bind [3H]PAF specifically. Binding was readily saturated, partially reversible, and fit a two receptor model; dissociation constant (Kd) values for high and low affinity sites were 0.2 and 500 nM, respectively. Receptors with similar affinities were detected in whole cells. Furthermore, the potencies of several structural analogues in inhibiting binding of [3H]PAF to membranes correlated closely with their respective potencies in stimulating degranulation responses. Finally, quantitative studies suggested all or most of the cell's receptors were membrane associated. We conclude that PAF rapidly enters cellular membranes to bind with specific receptors that trigger function. The intramembranous ligand is also deacetylated, acylated, and then transferred to granules. This metabolism may be sufficiently rapid to limit ligand-receptor binding and distort quantitative analyses of receptors

    Validation of cardiovascular magnetic resonance assessment of pericardial adipose tissue volume

    © 2009 Nelson et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.Background Pericardial adipose tissue (PAT) has been shown to be an independent predictor of coronary artery disease. To date its assessment has been restricted to the use of surrogate echocardiographic indices such as measurement of epicardial fat thickness over the right ventricular free wall, which have limitations. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) offers the potential to non-invasively assess total PAT, however like other imaging modalities, CMR has not yet been validated for this purpose. Thus, we sought to describe a novel technique for assessing total PAT with validation in an ovine model. Methods 11 merino sheep were studied. A standard clinical series of ventricular short axis CMR images (1.5T Siemens Sonata) were obtained during mechanical ventilation breath-holds. Beginning at the mitral annulus, consecutive end-diastolic ventricular images were used to determine the area and volume of epicardial, paracardial and pericardial adipose tissue. In addition adipose thickness was measured at the right ventricular free wall. Following euthanasia, the paracardial adipose tissue was removed from the ventricle and weighed to allow comparison with corresponding CMR measurements. Results There was a strong correlation between CMR-derived paracardial adipose tissue volume and ex vivo paracardial mass (R2 = 0.89, p < 0.001). In contrast, CMR measurements of corresponding RV free wall paracardial adipose thickness did not correlate with ex vivo paracardial mass (R2 = 0.003, p = 0.878). Conclusion In this ovine model, CMR-derived paracardial adipose tissue volume, but not the corresponding and conventional measure of paracardial adipose thickness over the RV free wall, accurately reflected paracardial adipose tissue mass. This study validates for the first time, the use of clinically utilised CMR sequences for the accurate and reproducible assessment of pericardial adiposity.
