    An Alternative Mechanism for the Delivery of Scholarly Journal Articles: ReadCube Access at the University of Utah

    Traditional collection management of serials through site licenses and subscriptions is increasingly unsustainable due to rising costs and steady or falling library budgets. The ensuing gaps in access have led to widespread illicit file sharing, resulting in the disintermediation of libraries and the devaluing of publishers. It has therefore become essential to explore alternatives for the delivery of journal literature. We report on the exploration of a new mechanism for the provision of scholarly articles using patron-driven acquisition (PDA). During the 2012–2013 academic year, the University of Utah Marriott Library, ReadCube, and Nature Publishing Group collaborated on the development and testing of ReadCube Access, an article delivery service designed to allow researchers to immediately access individual articles at a cost lower than traditional interlibrary loan, pay per view, or document delivery. The goal of this session is to explore the economics of collection management from the perspective of supplying needed scholarly articles and discuss how new technologies like ReadCube Access and PDA can support that aim. The session will involve a frank discussion of the effects of and attitudes toward illicit file sharing, from which the audience will learn about the scale of file sharing and how it affects the perceived value and, therefore, funding of libraries. An interactive workshop on cost-per-use assessment for various acquisition mechanisms will elucidate how the economics of acquisition mechanisms change with demand and under which conditions PDA will save libraries money while increasing patron engagement and satisfaction

    A Game of Spot the Difference: Librarians, Repository Managers, and Publishers

    Many library publishing programs emerged from institutional repositories. This close relationship has led to the emergence of content platforms that are designed to operate under either use case, however, the missions and requirements of the two types of program differ. A repository for example, may be primarily concerned with the curation, preservation, and accessibility of their institution’s academic output whilst publishers must also concern themselves with external discoverability, search engine optimization, getting indexed in abstract databases and marketing their journals. In this session, you will hear from three successful library publishers who have embraced this external facing aspect of publishing. The overlaps and differences between repositories and publishers will be explored and the speakers will share their thoughts on how library publishers can best serve their patrons be disseminating work and helping researchers to meet funder mandates for open access and data management

    New light from an old reagent: chemiluminescence from the reaction of potassium permanganate with sodium borohydride

    When aqueous sodium borohydride (50 mM) is added to a solution of potassium permanganate (1mM, in sodium hexametaphosphate) at acidic pH, bright red-orange emission is easily visible in a darkened room. This chemiluminescence emission is due to an excited state of manganese (II) that undergoes solution phase phosphorescence and provides an excellent opportunity for students to explore the relationship between the initial oxidation state of the manganese and the likelihood of luminescence. Not surprisingly Mn(VII), Mn(IV) and Mn(III) all give rise to chemiluminescence where as Mn(II) fails to react

    Reciprocal relationship between APP positioning relative to the membrane and PS1 conformation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several familial Alzheimer disease (FAD) mutations within the transmembrane region of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) increase the Aβ<sub>42/40 </sub>ratio without increasing total Aβ production. In the present study, we analyzed the impact of FAD mutations and γ-secretase modulators (GSMs) that alter the Aβ<sub>42/40 </sub>ratio on APP C-terminus (CT) positioning relative to the membrane, reasoning that changes in the alignment of the APP intramembranous domain and presenilin 1 (PS1) may impact the PS1/γ-secretase cleavage site on APP.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>By using a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based technique, fluorescent lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), we show that Aβ<sub>42/40 </sub>ratio-modulating factors which target either APP substrate or PS1/γ-secretase affect proximity of the APP-CT to the membrane and change PS1 conformation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Thus, we propose that there is a reciprocal relationship between APP-CT positioning relative to the membrane and PS1 conformation, suggesting that factors that modulate either APP positioning in the membrane or PS1 conformation could be exploited therapeutically.</p

    The use of structured relationship modelling techniques as a tool to elicit customizable product features

    The current article discusses a procedure for the elicitation of product requirements from a target group of users. The use of the method to help develop products with customizable elements is evaluated as this is one area in which this procedure is considered effective. The technique of forming a structured relationship model uses open-ended questions to elicit subject’s sensations when using the product under investigation. Inductive content analysis is then performed on the responses to allow a structured relationship model to be developed

    A reporter of local dendritic translocation shows plaque- related loss of neural system function in APP-transgenic mice

    Although neuronal communication is thought to be summated within local dendritic segments, no technique is currently available to monitor activity in vivo at this level of resolution. To overcome this challenge, we developed an optical reporter of neuronal activity utilizing the coding sequence of Venus, flanked by short stretches of the 5' and 3' untranslated regions from CAMKIIα. This reporter takes advantage of the fact that CAMKIIα mRNA is transported to the dendrite and locally translated in an activity dependent manner (Aakalu et al., 2001). Using adeno associated virus (AAV), we used this reporter to study neuronal activity in adult mice. Exposure of the mice to an enriched environment led to enhancement of Venus expression in dendritic segments of somatosensory cortex, demonstrating in vivo that dendritic mRNA translocation and local transcription occur in response to physiologically relevant stimuli. We then utilized this system to examine the impact of Alzheimer related local amyloid-β deposits on neural system function, to test the hypothesis that plaques are toxic. In APPswe/PS1d9 (APP/PS1) mice, neurons close to plaques, and dendritic segments close to plaques, both showed diminished fluorescent intensity and therefore neuronal activity. In contrast to wildtype mice, fluorescent intensity in neurons near plaques in transgenic mice did not increase after environmental enrichment. These data indicate that neuronal activity in dendritic segments and neurons in the vicinity of a plaque is decreased compared to wildtype mice, supporting the idea that plaques are a focal lesion leading to impaired neural system function

SEIZE Leeds invited 26 artists to respond to an office space – to explore the tools and working methods common to such spaces through making art. Occupying a disused floor of Wellington Park House, in Leeds’ busy financial district, the exhibition brought together a diverse range of artists in order to showcase both emerging and more established practitioners from across the UK. SEIZE Leeds is an artist-led organisation that works to engage and support emerging and mid-career artists both regionally and nationally through a programme of ambitious art shows and events. They work with vacant spaces in situ to produce exciting and accessible exhibitions that explore ideas relevant to each location and promote talent

    Lowering Transport Costs and Prices by Competition: Regulatory and Institutional Reforms in Low Income Countries

    High passenger and freight transport costs are a barrier to economic growth and social mobility, particularly in Low Income Countries (LICs). This paper considers the current state of knowledge regarding the barriers to achieving lower generalised transport costs. It considers both the road and railway modes across passenger and freight transport. These issues include a reform on the regulations for driver hours (preventing the road infrastructure from overloading), structuring rail concessions, increasing competition, and tackling corruption. Such reforms aim to deliver efficiency gains and service quality improvements at lower costs for users. This paper identifies the knowledge gap in previous research and concludes by setting out a research agenda that builds the evidence base for how the best practices from around the world can best be applied to the specific circumstances in Low Income Countries, with a particular focus on Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asi
