    There is considerable interest in the kinetics and concentrations of free radicals in the stratosphere. Chlorine monoxide is a critically important radical because of its role in catalytic cycles for ozone depletion. Depletion occurs under a wide variety of conditions including the Antarctic spring when unusual mechanisms such as the BrO sub x/ClO sub x, ClO dimer (Cl sub 2 O sub 2), and ClO sub x/HO sub x cycles are suggested to operate. Infrared spectroscopy is one of the methods used to measure ClO in the stratosphere (Menzies 1979 and 1983; Mumma et al., 1983).     Monitoring the long-term radial velocity (RV) and acceleration of nearby stars has proven an effective method for directly detecting binary and substellar companions. Some fraction of nearby RV trend systems are expected to be comprised of compact objects that likewise induce a systemic Doppler signal. In this paper, we report the discovery of a white dwarf companion found to orbit the nearby (π=28.297±0.066\pi = 28.297 \pm 0.066 mas) G9 V star HD 169889. High-contrast imaging observations using NIRC2 at Keck and LMIRCam at the LBT uncover the (ΔH=9.76±0.16\Delta H = 9.76 \pm 0.16, ΔL′=9.60±0.03\Delta L' = 9.60 \pm 0.03) companion at an angular separation of 0.8'' (28 au). Thirteen years of precise Doppler observations reveal a steep linear acceleration in RV time series and place a dynamical constraint on the companion mass of M≥0.369±0.010M⊙M \geq 0.369 \pm 0.010 M_{\odot}.     Use of suppression subtractive hybridisation to extend our knowledge of genome diversity in Campylobacter jejuni

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previous studies have sought to identify a link between the distribution of variable genes amongst isolates of <it>Campylobacter jejuni </it>and particular host preferences. The genomic sequence data available currently was obtained using only isolates from human or chicken hosts. In order to identify variable genes present in isolates from alternative host species, five subtractions between <it>C. jejuni </it>isolates from different sources (rabbit, cattle, wild bird) were carried out, designed to assess genomic variability within and between common multilocus sequence type (MLST) clonal complexes (ST-21, ST-42, ST-45 and ST-61).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The vast majority (97%) of the 195 subtracted sequences identified had a best BLASTX match with a <it>Campylobacter </it>protein. However, there was considerable variation within and between the four clonal complexes included in the subtractions. The distributions of eight variable sequences, including four with putative roles in the use of alternative terminal electron acceptors, amongst a panel of <it>C. jejuni </it>isolates representing diverse sources and STs, were determined.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There was a clear correlation between clonal complex and the distribution of the metabolic genes. In contrast, there was no evidence to support the hypothesis that the distribution of such genes may be related to host preference. The other variable genes studied were also generally distributed according to MLST type. Thus, we found little evidence for widespread horizontal gene transfer between clonal complexes involving these genes.</p

    Are Petroglyphs Markers for Frontier Boundaries or Directional to Raw Material Resources?

    The Shawangunk, NY region is known for rich mineral resources: anomalous concentrations of quartz crystals; native silver; silver, copper and zinc sulfides; and minimal quantities of native gold. The Shawangunks also host Native American petroglyphs carved into local bedrock. Although the Shawangunks are rich in metallic ores and semiprecious minerals, the entire range is sorely deficient in chert and other raw materials used for prehistoric subsistence. Despite the lack of raw materials for subsistence needs, archaeological tools found in the area are strikingly similar in raw-material type, as well as general morphology, to quarry-extraction tools discovered in the adjacent Wallkill Valley. The Wallkill Valley contains hundreds of prehistoric chert quarries occurring in Cambro-Ordovician carbonates. Recovered objects are fashioned from metaconglomerates, arkoses, quartzites, and argillites occurring within the graded sequences of the middle to upper Silurian Shawangunk Formation. The formation extends from Rosendale, NY southward into Virginia and unconformably overlies shales and graywackes of the Ordovician Martinsburg Formation. The Shawangunk Ridge in the vicinity of New Paltz, NY consists of gray to white conglomerate and quartzite, with milky quartz pebbles and rose quartz in the upper part of the formation. It pinches out near Binnewater, NY. Tools weigh up to 10 kg and are battered on all surfaces. Some surfaces show pitting, grinding and abrasion. Ruptures occurring along joint surfaces, or joint-bedding intersections, are flaked backward to prepare a wedge-like impact surface. The full complement of rock types occurring within the graded sequence are exploited for their durability in production of tools. Morphologically the objects fit categorically into the chain of operation of lithic production described for Wallkill Valley chert quarries. Considering the paucity of subsistence raw material in the Shawangunks, what does the richness of petroglyphs and extraction tools signify? Do petroglyphs represent territorial/frontier boundaries or limits of raw-material resources? Perhaps the petroglyphs mark the entranceway to sources of commodity minerals employed for personal adornment, ideological activities or internment

    Secukinumab versus adalimumab for psoriatic arthritis: comparative effectiveness up to 48 weeks using a matching-adjusted indirect comparison

    Secukinumab and adalimumab are approved for adults with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA). In the absence of direct randomized controlled trial (RCT) data, matching-adjusted indirect comparison can estimate the comparative effectiveness in anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-naïve populations. Individual patient data from the FUTURE 2 RCT (secukinumab vs. placebo; N = 299) were adjusted to match baseline characteristics of the ADEPT RCT (adalimumab vs. placebo; N = 313). Logistic regression determined adjustment weights for age, body weight, sex, race, methotrexate use, psoriasis affecting ≥ 3% of body surface area, Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score, Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index score, presence of dactylitis and enthesitis, and previous anti-TNF therapy. Recalculated secukinumab outcomes were compared with adalimumab outcomes at weeks 12 (placebo-adjusted), 16, 24, and 48 (nonplacebo-adjusted). After matching, the effective sample size for FUTURE 2 was 101. Week 12 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) response rates were not significantly different between secukinumab and adalimumab. Week 16 ACR 20 and 50 response rates were higher for secukinumab 150 mg than for adalimumab (P = 0.017, P = 0.033), as was ACR 50 for secukinumab 300 mg (P = 0.030). Week 24 ACR 20 and 50 were higher for secukinumab 150 mg than for adalimumab (P = 0.001, P = 0.019), as was ACR 20 for secukinumab 300 mg (P = 0.048). Week 48 ACR 20 was higher for secukinumab 150 and 300 mg than for adalimumab (P = 0.002, P = 0.027), as was ACR 50 for secukinumab 300 mg (P = 0.032). In our analysis, patients with PsA receiving secukinumab were more likely to achieve higher ACR responses through 1 year (weeks 16-48) than those treated with adalimumab. Although informative, these observations rely on a subgroup of patients from FUTURE 2 and thus should be considered interim until the ongoing head-to-head RCT EXCEED can validate these findings.
