Path integrals on manifolds by finite dimensional approximation
Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary and let H be a
self-adjoint generalized Laplace operator acting on sections in a bundle over
M. We give a path integral formula for the solution to the corresponding heat
equation. This is based on approximating path space by finite dimensional
spaces of geodesic polygons. We also show a uniform convergence result for the
heat kernels. This yields a simple and natural proof for the
Hess-Schrader-Uhlenbrock estimate and a path integral formula for the trace of
the heat operator.Comment: 23 page
Transformer models for electromagnetic transient studies with particular reference to HVdc transmission.
In this thesis a formulation for incorporating general magnetic equivalent circuits in
electromagnetic transient programs is presented. The formulation is applied to create
new single-phase, and the first three-limb three-phase PSCAD-EMTDC program
transformer models. The new models proposed are validated with laboratory, factory,
and field data.
Problems associated with magnetically independent phase representations of three-limb
three-phase transformers are discussed. Considerable differences are shown in the
behaviour of three-phase bank and three-limb three-phase transformers, particularly
for the case of in-rush studies.
The new transformer models arc applied to: the first intervalidation of the Harmonic
Domain Analysis program with the widely accepted PSCAD-EMTDC program,
investigating the division of magnetising current harmonics between transformer windings,
and the development of a new means to reduce HVdc converter dc side harmonics;
the smoothing transformer.
The first set of field measurements from a group connected generator HVdc converter
station are presented. A PSCAD-EMTDC model for the group connection is
validated with the field data and used to investigate the transient behaviour of three-phase
bank and three-limb three-phase converter transformers. Considerable differences
are shown in the case of a single-phase ground fault

Chiral Asymmetry and the Spectral Action
We consider orthogonal connections with arbitrary torsion on compact
Riemannian manifolds. For the induced Dirac operators, twisted Dirac operators
and Dirac operators of Chamseddine-Connes type we compute the spectral action.
In addition to the Einstein-Hilbert action and the bosonic part of the Standard
Model Lagrangian we find the Holst term from Loop Quantum Gravity, a coupling
of the Holst term to the scalar curvature and a prediction for the value of the
Barbero-Immirzi parameter
Beyond Einstein-Cartan gravity: Quadratic torsion and curvature invariants with even and odd parity including all boundary terms
Recently, gravitational gauge theories with torsion have been discussed by an
increasing number of authors from a classical as well as from a quantum field
theoretical point of view. The Einstein-Cartan(-Sciama-Kibble) Lagrangian has
been enriched by the parity odd pseudoscalar curvature (Hojman, Mukku, and
Sayed) and by torsion square and curvature square pieces, likewise of even and
odd parity. (i) We show that the inverse of the so-called Barbero-Immirzi
parameter multiplying the pseudoscalar curvature, because of the topological
Nieh-Yan form, can only be appropriately discussed if torsion square pieces are
included. (ii) The quadratic gauge Lagrangian with both parities, proposed by
Obukhov et al. and Baekler et al., emerges also in the framework of Diakonov et
al.(2011). We establish the exact relations between both approaches by applying
the topological Euler and Pontryagin forms in a Riemann-Cartan space expressed
for the first time in terms of irreducible pieces of the curvature tensor.
(iii) Only in a Riemann-Cartan spacetime, that is, in a spacetime with torsion,
parity violating terms can be brought into the gravitational Lagrangian in a
straightforward and natural way. Accordingly, Riemann-Cartan spacetime is a
natural habitat for chiral fermionic matter fields.Comment: 12 page latex, as version 2 an old file was submitted by mistake,

The Spectral Action for Dirac Operators with skew-symmetric Torsion
We derive a formula for the gravitational part of the spectral action for
Dirac operators on 4-dimensional manifolds with totally anti-symmetric torsion.
We find that the torsion becomes dynamical and couples to the traceless part of
the Riemann curvature tensor. Finally we deduce the Lagrangian for the Standard
Model of particle physics in presence of torsion from the Chamseddine-Connes
Dirac operator.Comment: Longer introduction and conclusion adde
The Holst Action by the Spectral Action Principle
We investigate the Holst action for closed Riemannian 4-manifolds with
orthogonal connections. For connections whose torsion has zero Cartan type
component we show that the Holst action can be recovered from the heat
asymptotics for the natural Dirac operator acting on left-handed spinor fields.Comment: We correct a sign mistake in Proposition 2.3. As a consequence the
main result (Theorem 3.4) becomes more natura
Defective minor spliceosome mRNA processing results in isolated familial growth hormone deficiency
The molecular basis of a significant number of cases of isolated growth hormone deficiency remains unknown. We describe three sisters affected with severe isolated growth hormone deficiency and pituitary hypoplasia caused by biallelic mutations in the RNPC3 gene, which codes for a minor spliceosome protein required for U11/U12 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) formation and splicing of U12-type introns. We found anomalies in U11/U12 di-snRNP formation and in splicing of multiple U12-type introns in patient cells. Defective transcripts include preprohormone convertases SPCS2 and SPCS3 and actin-related ARPC5L genes, which are candidates for the somatotroph-restricted dysfunction. The reported novel mechanism for familial growth hormone deficiency demonstrates that general mRNA processing defects of the minor spliceosome can lead to very narrow tissue-specific consequences.Peer reviewe
The spectral action and cosmic topology
The spectral action functional, considered as a model of gravity coupled to
matter, provides, in its non-perturbative form, a slow-roll potential for
inflation, whose form and corresponding slow-roll parameters can be sensitive
to the underlying cosmic topology. We explicitly compute the non-perturbative
spectral action for some of the main candidates for cosmic topologies, namely
the quaternionic space, the Poincare' dodecahedral space, and the flat tori. We
compute the corresponding slow-roll parameters and see we check that the
resulting inflation model behaves in the same way as for a simply-connected
spherical topology in the case of the quaternionic space and the Poincare'
homology sphere, while it behaves differently in the case of the flat tori. We
add an appendix with a discussion of the case of lens spaces.Comment: 55 pages, LaTe
