    Teorie della gravitazione f(R)

    Tra tutti i fenomeni naturali osservabili, ne era presente uno particolarmente interessante e con il quale si aveva diretto contatto quotidianamente: la gravità. Dopo le innumerevoli osservazioni astronomiche effettuate da Galileo, fu Newton nel diciassettesimo secolo a capire che il moto dei pianeti era governato dalle medesime leggi che descrivono la caduta dei gravi sulla Terra e fu quindi lui che ci fornÏ una prima teoria della gravità con la quale si spiegarono le orbite dei pianeti con ottima precisione. Grazie al contributo di Einstein, la teoria si rinnovò e si arricchÏ, ma rimase pur sempre lontana dall' essere completa, tant' è che ancora oggi sono presenti molte domande a cui non siamo in grado di rispondere. In questo articolo ci occuperemo di tali quesiti, provando a formulare una teoria che sia in accordo con le attuali evidenze sperimentali. Nella prima parte, tratteremo le ragioni che hanno spinto i ricercatori ad introdurre le nuove teorie della gravità f(R); in particolare vedremo la peculiarità delle curve di rotazione delle galassie e perchÊ ci sia il bisogno di tirare in ballo la materia oscura. Discuteremo anche alcuni problemi derivanti dall' evoluzione cosmica e altre incongruenze riguardanti la stabilità delle stelle di neutroni. In seguito mostreremo come ricavare l' equazione di Einstein partendo dai principi variazionali di Hamilton, e estenderemo tale ragionamento con lo scopo di ottenere un' equazione corrispondente ad una gravità modificata. Infine, verranno introdotte le teorie della gravità f(R), per mezzo delle quali cercheremo di discutere alcune possibili spiegazioni alle problematiche mosse nella parte introduttiva

    Studio di sensibilitĂ  dei sensori MHS, ATMS, GMI, SSMIS e sviluppo di un algoritmo prototipale per il retrieval del vapore acqueo

    La presente tesi affronta due tematiche differenti basandosi sulle radianze simulate dal codice di trasferimento radiativo RTTOV. Il primo studio ha lo scopo di comprendere la sensibilità nelle microonde dei radiometri satellitari MHS, ATMS, GMI e SSMIS in presenza di nubi di acqua liquida, ghiacciata e precipitazioni liquide e solide. In particolare, l’indagine è stata effettuata nelle bande spettrali con frequenze a 90, 150 GHz (o 157 o 166 a seconda del sensore) e nei canali del vapor d’acqua attorno alla frequenza di assorbimento a 183 GHz. Il metodo scelto è stato quello di attuare 4 diverse simulazioni per ogni strumento, ognuna delle quali eseguita azzerando il contributo di 3 idrometeore su 4. A questo punto, è stato esaminato l’andamento delle temperature di brillanza in funzione del contenuto colonnare dell’unica tipologia di idrometeora considerata. Nella seconda parte, l’obiettivo ha riguardato lo sviluppo di due algoritmi prototipali, su terra e su mare, per ciascuno dei 4 sensori presi in esame, in grado di stimare l’acqua precipitabile totale da misure satellitari di radianza, in condizioni di cielo sereno. Per la fase di sviluppo, TPW (total precipitable water) inerenti a profili creati da WRF e BT (brightness temperature) simulate da RTTOV, nei canali tra 90 e 183 GHz, sono stati messi in relazione attraverso una regressione lineare multipla, così da determinare la migliore stima per i coefficienti. In seguito si è passati alla validazione degli algoritmi su altri profili indipendenti. I test sono stati eseguiti su 4 diversi dataset, creati da WRF, inerenti a stagioni diverse: febbraio, giugno, agosto e ottobre. Anche in questo caso, le temperature di brillanza inserite negli algoritmi sono state ottenute da simulazioni di RTTOV, a cielo sereno. Infine è stato applicato l’algoritmo di retrieval su dati satellitari di MHS, inerenti alla data di febbraio scelta per la validazione

    Automatic Calibration of a Two-Axis Rotary Table for 3D Scanning Purposes

    Rotary tables are often used to speed up the acquisition time during the 3D scanning of complex geometries. In order to avoid manual registration of the point clouds acquired with different orientations, automatic algorithms to compensate the rotation were developed. Alternatively, a proper calibration of the rotary axis with respect to the camera system is needed. Several methods are available in the literature, but they only consider a single-axis calibration. In this paper, a method for the simultaneous calibration of both axes of the table is proposed. A checkerboard is attached to the table, and several images with different poses are acquired. An optimization algorithm is then setup to determine the orientation and the locations of the two axes. A metric to assess the calibration quality was also defined by computing the average mean reprojection error. This metric is used to investigate the optimal number and distribution of the calibration poses, demonstrating that the optimum calibration results are achieved when a wider dispersion of the calibration poses is adopted

    Analysis of NO2 and O3 Total Columns from DOAS Zenith-Sky Measurements in South Italy

    The Gas Absorption Spectrometer Correlating Optical Difference—New Generation 4 (GASCOD/NG4) is a multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) instrument which measures diffuse solar spectra at the Environmental-Climate Observatory (ECO) of the Italian research institute CNR-ISAC, near Lecce. The high-resolution spectra measured in zenith-sky configuration were used to retrieve the NO2 and O3 vertical column densities (VCDs) from March 2017 to November 2019. These good-quality data, proven by the comparison with the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) satellite measurements, were used to characterize the ECO site by exploiting the sinergy with in situ NO2 and O3 concentrations and meteorological data. Although stratospheric processes seem to be the main forces behind the NO2 and O3 VCDs seasonal trends, diurnal variabilities revealed the presence of a tropospheric signal in the NO2 VCDs, which had significant lower values during Sundays. Comparison with wind data acquired at the ECO observatory, at 20 m above the ground, revealed how NO2 VCDs are influenced by both tropospheric local production and transport from the nearby city of Lecce. On the other hand, no significant tropospheric signal was contained in the O3 VCDs

    Phosgene distribution derived from MIPAS ESA v8 data: intercomparisons and trends

    The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) measured the middle-infrared limb emission spectrum of the atmosphere from 2002 to 2012 on board ENVISAT, a polar-orbiting satellite. Recently, the European Space Agency (ESA) completed the final reprocessing of MIPAS measurements, using version 8 of the level 1 and level 2 processors, which include more accurate models, processing strategies, and auxiliary data. The list of retrieved gases has been extended, and it now includes a number of new species with weak emission features in the MIPAS spectral range. The new retrieved trace species include carbonyl chloride (COCl2), also called phosgene. Due to its toxicity, its use has been reduced over the years; however, it is still used by chemical industries for several applications. Besides its direct injection in the troposphere, stratospheric phosgene is mainly produced from the photolysis of CCl4, a molecule present in the atmosphere because of human activity. Since phosgene has a long stratospheric lifetime, it must be carefully monitored as it is involved in the ozone destruction cycles, especially over the winter polar regions. In this paper we exploit the ESA MIPAS version 8 data in order to discuss the phosgene distribution, variability, and trends in the middle and lower stratosphere and in the upper troposphere. The zonal averages show that phosgene volume mixing ratio is larger in the stratosphere, with a peak of 40 pptv (parts per trillion by volume) between 50 and 30 hPa at equatorial latitudes, while at middle and polar latitudes it varies from 10 to 25 pptv. A moderate seasonal variability is observed in polar regions, mostly between 80 and 50 hPa. The comparison of MIPAS–ENVISAT COCl2 v8 profiles with the ones retrieved from MIPAS balloon and ACE-FTS (Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment – Fourier Transform Spectrometer) measurements highlights a negative bias of about 2 pptv, mainly in polar and mid-latitude regions. Part of this bias is attributed to the fact that the ESA level 2 v8 processor uses an updated spectroscopic database. For the trend computation, a fixed pressure grid is used to interpolate the phosgene profiles, and, for each pressure level, VMR (volume mixing ratio) monthly averages are computed in pre-defined 10∘ wide latitude bins. Then, for each latitudinal bin and pressure level, a regression model has been fitted to the resulting time series in order to derive the atmospheric trends. We find that the phosgene trends are different in the two hemispheres. The analysis shows that the stratosphere of the Northern Hemisphere is characterized by a negative trend of about −7 pptv per decade, while in the Southern Hemisphere phosgene mixing ratios increase with a rate of the order of +4 pptv per decade. This behavior resembles the stratospheric trend of CCl4, which is the main stratospheric source of COCl2. In the upper troposphere a positive trend is found in both hemispheres.</p

    The ESA MIPAS/Envisat level2-v8 dataset: 10 years of measurements retrieved with ORM v8.22

    The observations acquired during the full mission of the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) instrument, aboard the European Space Agency Environmental Satellite (Envisat), have been analysed with version 8.22 of the Optimised Retrieval Model (ORM), originally developed as the scientific prototype of the ESA level-2 processor for MIPAS observations. The results of the analyses have been included into the MIPAS level-2 version 8 (level2-v8) database containing atmospheric fields of pressure, temperature, and volume mixing ratio (VMR) of MIPAS main targets H2_{2}O, O3_{3}, HNO3_{3}, CH4_{4}, N2_{2}O, and NO2_{2}, along with the minor gases CFC-11, ClONO2_{2}, N2_{2}O5_{5}, CFC-12, COF2_{2}, CCl4_{4}, CF4_{4}, HCFC-22, C2_{2}H2_{2}, CH3_{3}Cl, COCl2_{2}, C2_{2}H6_{6}, OCS, and HDO. The database covers all the measurements acquired by MIPAS in the nominal measurement mode of the full resolution (FR) part of the mission (from July 2002 to March 2004) and all the observation modes of the optimised resolution (OR) part (from January 2005 to April 2012). The number of species included in the MIPAS level2-v8 dataset makes it of particular importance for the studies of stratospheric chemistry. The database is considered by ESA the final release of the MIPAS level-2 products. The ORM algorithm is operated at the vertical grid coincident to the tangent altitudes of the observations or to a subset of them, spanning (in the nominal mode) the altitude range from 6 to 68 km in the FR phase and from 6 to 70 km in the OR period. In the latitude domain, FR profiles are spaced by about 4.7∘, while the OR profiles are spaced by about 3.7∘. For each retrieved species, the auxiliary data and the retrieval choices are described. Each product is characterised in terms of the retrieval error, spatial resolution, and “useful” vertical range in both phases of the MIPAS mission. These depend on the characteristics of the measurements (spectral and vertical resolution of the measurements), the retrieval choices (number of spectral points included in the analyses, number of altitudes included in the vertical retrieval grid), and the information content of the measurements for each trace species. For temperature, water vapour, ozone, and nitric acid, the number of degrees of freedom is significantly larger in the OR phase than in the FR one, mainly due to the finer vertical measurement grid. In the FR phase, some trace species are characterised by a smaller retrieval error with respect to the OR phase, mainly due to the larger number of spectral points used in the analyses, along with the reduced vertical resolution. The way of handling possible caveats (negative VMR, vertical grid representation) is discussed. The quality of the retrieved profiles is assessed through four criteria, two providing information on the successful convergence of the retrieval iterations, one on the capability of the retrieval to reproduce the measurements, and one on the presence of outliers. An easy way to identify and filter the problematic profiles with the information contained in the output files is provided.     Extracorporeal life support in mitral papillary muscle rupture: Outcome of multicenter study

    Background: Post-acute myocardial infarction papillary muscle rupture (post-AMI PMR) may present variable clinical scenarios and degree of emergency due to result of cardiogenic shock. Veno-arterial extracorporeal life support (V-A ECLS) has been proposed to improve extremely poor pre- or postoperative conditions. Information in this respect is scarce.Methods: From the CAUTION (meChanical complicAtion of acUte myocardial infarcTion: an InternatiOnal multiceNter cohort study) database (16 different Centers, data from 2001 to 2018), we extracted adult patients who were surgically treated for post-AMI PMR and underwent pre- or/and postoperative V-A ECLS support. The end-points of this study were in-hospital survival and ECLS complications.Results: From a total of 214 post-AMI PMR patients submitted to surgery, V-A ECLS was instituted in 23 (11%) patients. The median age was 61.7 years (range 46-81 years). Preoperatively, ECLS was commenced in 10 patients (43.5%), whereas intra/postoperative in the remaining 13. The most common V-A ECLS indication was post-cardiotomy shock, followed by preoperative cardiogenic shock and cardiac arrest. The median duration of V-A ECLS was 4 days. V-A ECLS complications occurred in more than half of the patients. Overall, in-hospital mortality was 39.2% (9/23), compared to 22% (42/219) for the non-ECLS group.Conclusions: In post-AMI PMR patients, V-A ECLS was used in almost 10% of the patients either to promote bridge to surgery or as postoperative support. Further investigations are required to better evaluate a potential for increased use and its effects of V-A ECLS in such a context based on the still high perioperative mortality

    Serum Albumin Is Inversely Associated With Portal Vein Thrombosis in Cirrhosis

    We analyzed whether serum albumin is independently associated with portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in liver cirrhosis (LC) and if a biologic plausibility exists. This study was divided into three parts. In part 1 (retrospective analysis), 753 consecutive patients with LC with ultrasound-detected PVT were retrospectively analyzed. In part 2, 112 patients with LC and 56 matched controls were entered in the cross-sectional study. In part 3, 5 patients with cirrhosis were entered in the in vivo study and 4 healthy subjects (HSs) were entered in the in vitro study to explore if albumin may affect platelet activation by modulating oxidative stress. In the 753 patients with LC, the prevalence of PVT was 16.7%; logistic analysis showed that only age (odds ratio [OR], 1.024; P = 0.012) and serum albumin (OR, -0.422; P = 0.0001) significantly predicted patients with PVT. Analyzing the 112 patients with LC and controls, soluble clusters of differentiation (CD)40-ligand (P = 0.0238), soluble Nox2-derived peptide (sNox2-dp; P &lt; 0.0001), and urinary excretion of isoprostanes (P = 0.0078) were higher in patients with LC. In LC, albumin was correlated with sCD4OL (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient [r(s)], -0.33; P &lt; 0.001), sNox2-dp (r(s), -0.57; P &lt; 0.0001), and urinary excretion of isoprostanes (r(s), -0.48; P &lt; 0.0001) levels. The in vivo study showed a progressive decrease in platelet aggregation, sNox2-dp, and urinary 8-iso prostaglandin F2 alpha-III formation 2 hours and 3 days after albumin infusion. Finally, platelet aggregation, sNox2-dp, and isoprostane formation significantly decreased in platelets from HSs incubated with scalar concentrations of albumin. Conclusion: Low serum albumin in LC is associated with PVT, suggesting that albumin could be a modulator of the hemostatic system through interference with mechanisms regulating platelet activation

    Beta-Blocker Use in Older Hospitalized Patients Affected by Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: An Italian Survey From the REPOSI Register

    Beta (β)-blockers (BB) are useful in reducing morbidity and mortality in patients with heart failure (HF) and concomitant chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Nevertheless, the use of BBs could induce bronchoconstriction due to β2-blockade. For this reason, both the ESC and GOLD guidelines strongly suggest the use of selective β1-BB in patients with HF and COPD. However, low adherence to guidelines was observed in multiple clinical settings. The aim of the study was to investigate the BBs use in older patients affected by HF and COPD, recorded in the REPOSI register. Of 942 patients affected by HF, 47.1% were treated with BBs. The use of BBs was significantly lower in patients with HF and COPD than in patients affected by HF alone, both at admission and at discharge (admission, 36.9% vs. 51.3%; discharge, 38.0% vs. 51.7%). In addition, no further BB users were found at discharge. The probability to being treated with a BB was significantly lower in patients with HF also affected by COPD (adj. OR, 95% CI: 0.50, 0.37-0.67), while the diagnosis of COPD was not associated with the choice of selective β1-BB (adj. OR, 95% CI: 1.33, 0.76-2.34). Despite clear recommendations by clinical guidelines, a significant underuse of BBs was also observed after hospital discharge. In COPD affected patients, physicians unreasonably reject BBs use, rather than choosing a β1-BB. The expected improvement of the BB prescriptions after hospitalization was not observed. A multidisciplinary approach among hospital physicians, general practitioners, and pharmacologists should be carried out for better drug management and adherence to guideline recommendations
