Engineering Education Periodicals and Proceedings: Increasing Awareness of and Access to the Literature

    Get PDF
In the vast realm, of engineering literature there is a set of publications that is often unknown and certainly underutilized: engineering education periodicals and proceedings. These publications can easily be overlooked by engineering faculty, researchers, students, librarians or information professionals, and others who may not be fully aware of their existence or content. There has been a need for a definitive list of such publications for some time. This paper presents an initial list of these hems as the first step to make them more accessible to those in engineering education who may need them. The next step wil1 be to create a descriptive database of these items, briefly detailing their content, stating who publishes them, indicating what indexes or databases they are indexed or 'abstracted in and showing if they are available electronical1y. A, print-out of such a database could serve as an annotated bibliography, a finding guide, and as a checklist of engineering education periodicals and conference proceedings. Such a print-out could then be published by ASEE in its Guide to the Literature series or as an additional conference paper. As a result, the engineering education literature of ASEE and other organizations or publishers could be more easily identified and utilized by those who create it and by those who would benefit the most from it, namely engineering educators

Selective Guide to Literature on Aerospace Engineering

    Get PDF
The term aerospace incorporates all aspects of flight including aviation, aeronautics, and astronautics. This ASEE Selective Guide to Literature on Aerospace Engineering identifies essential sources of information according to their function and format. The Guide will be useful for practicing engineers, engineering faculty, and engineering students and all who need to know where to look for information on a variety of topics in aerospace engineering. Librarians, library and information science students, and other information professionals will find it useful for planning access services and for collection development. From the launching of balloons in the 19th century to the airplane and spacecraft flights of this century, the aerospace literature has recorded scientific, governmental, industrial, and commercial efforts and achievements. The literature of aerospace engineering over the past 100 years remains of current interest, as knowledge in this field is cumulative and relevant to both historians and practitioners. The entire aerospace effort continues to command a high profile in modern society and is of benefit to people everywhere. As the field of aerospace engineering continues to grow and change, it will be even more important to track its activities and accomplishments through the literature sources listed here. This Guide includes bibliographies, guides to the literature, indexes and abstracts, Internet resources, encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, directories, specifications and standards, government documents, statistical sources, selected periodicals, and selected conference proceedings. Selections are based on the compilers\u27 knowledge and experience in engineering librarianship and interlibrary loan services. Members of the ASEE Engineering Libraries Division and the SLA Aerospace and Engineering Divisions were generous with their input and suggestions. Publishers were occasionally inserted as assumed corporate authors. One such example is Jane\u27s Information Group. The resulting advantage is that all publications for a publisher were then grouped together

Scaling relationship between the wavelength of longitudinal ridges and the thickness of long runout landslides on the moon

    Get PDF
The formation mechanism of longitudinal ridges in long runout landslides has been proposed to require ice and/or clay minerals, as low friction materials would allow the spreading of the deposit, causing the development of longitudinal ridges by tensile deformation of the slide. The necessity of ice in the formation of longitudinal ridges has been challenged by the finding that the wavelength of longitudinal ridges is 2 to 3 times the thickness of the deposit in both ice-free laboratory experiments on rapid granular flows and in a martian and terrestrial long runout landslide, suggesting a scale- and environment-independent mechanism. We conduct morphometric analysis of the longitudinal ridges in two landslides on the Moon, considered ice-free throughout its geological history: the Tsiolkovskiy crater landslide; and the Light Mantle avalanche in Taurus-Littrow Valley. We show that Tsiolkovskiy crater landslide exhibits a scaling relationship between the wavelength of its longitudinal ridges and the thickness of its deposit that is consistent with previous studies, supporting the idea that ice is not a necessary condition for the development of longitudinal ridges. As the Tsiolkovskiy crater landslide is laterally confined, it demonstrates that neither the development of longitudinal ridges nor the occurrence of the scaling relationship between the wavelength of the ridges and the thickness of the deposit depend on the lateral spreading of the deposit. Finally, we use the Light Mantle to test the use of the scaling relationship as a tool to estimate the thickness of the deposit when classical geomorphological methods are not applicable

A Review on Tree Species Suitability for Wood Fuel in Kilimanjaro Region

    Get PDF
Wood energy provides 92% of Tanzania’s national energy needs. Wood is the standard cooking fuel for the majority of Tanzanian households and also an important energy source for small-scale rural industries. This paper focuses on suitability of tree species as wood-fuel in Kilimanjaro region mainly through literature review. Results show that when choosing wood for heat energy production, wood moisture content and basic density have to be considered as they affect amount of available heat per unit volume of fuel (calorific value).Β  The moisture content or any water in the wood has to boil away before the wood will burn, and this will reduce the net energy released as useful heat. Hardwood species are generally denser than softwood species and dense woods will burn for longer than less dense woods. For the purpose of this paper, wood basic density was used as a criterion for selecting tree species suitable for wood fuel in Kilimanjaro region.Β  The study has revealed that Acacia xanthophloea, Eucalyptus maidenii, Cordia africana, Casuarina equisetifolia, Terminalia superba, Senna siamea, Bauhinia petersiana, Azadirachta indica, Albizia versicolar and Ficus benjamina are among the tree species suitable for wood fuel in Kilimanjaro by having higher basic density than 500kg/m3. Β It is recommended that the suitable tree species for wood-fuel uses should be raised and managed by villagers in order to have enough stock for planting. Establishment of demonstration plots for suitable trees for wood fuel in Kilimanjaro region is also recommended.

Yield and quality of milk and udder health in Martina Franca ass: effects of daily interval and time of machine milking

    Get PDF
Twenty asses of Martina Franca breed, machine milked twice a day, were used to assess the influence of milking interval (3-h, 5-h, and 8-h; N=5) and time (700, 1200 and 1900) on milk yield and udder health. Individual milk samples were taken to determine fat, protein and lactose con- tent. Sensory analysis profile was also assessed. Milk's total bacterial count (TBC), somatic cell con- tent (SCC) and udder's skin temperature were considered to assess udder health. Milk yield increases by 28.4% (P<0.01) with a milking interval from 3-h to 8-h and is higher (P<0.01) at morning milking. The maximum milk yield per milking corresponds to 700 milking (1416.9 mL) thus indicating a circa- dian rhythm in milk secretion processes. Milking intervals of 5 and 8 hours cause a decrease (P<0.01) in milk fat and lactose content. The 8-h interval leads to an increase (P<0.01) in SCC but without any significance for the health udder. No alterations about CBT, clinical evaluation and temperature of ud- der were observed. Milk organoleptic characteristics were better in the 3-h interval milking

Clinical and biological significance of miR-23b and miR-193a in human hepatocellular carcinoma

    Get PDF
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common cancer of the liver with a very poor prognosis. The dysregulation of microRNAs (miRs) is indeed implicated in HCC onset and progression. In this study, we have evaluated the expression of miR-23b and miR-193a in a large cohort of 59 and 67 HCC patients, respectively. miR-23b and miR-193a resulted significantly down-regulated in primary HCCs compared to their matched peritumoral counterparts. Furthermore, patients with higher miR-193a expression exhibited longer OS and DFS, suggesting that miR-193a may be a molecular prognostic factor for HCC patients. Since the regulation of miRs by DNA methylation may occur in human cancers, we verified whether the down-modulation of miR-23b and miR-193a in HCC tissues could be related to DNA methylation. An inverse trend between miR-23b expression and DNA methylation was observed, indicating that miR-23b can be epigenetically regulated. By contrast, the down-regulation of miR-193a was not mediated by DNA methylation. To verify the potential role of miR-23b and miR-193a as responsive molecular targets in vitro, we used the inhibitor of DNA methylation 5-aza-dC to restore miR-23b expression level in combination with miR-193a transfection. The combined treatment led to a significant inhibition of cellular proliferation and migration. Taken together, our findings provide evidence that miR-23b and miR-193a may be molecular diagnostic and prognostic factors for HCC; furthermore, miR-23b and miR-193a are responsive molecular targets for limiting HCC cell aggressiveness in combination with the epigenetic drug 5-aza-dC. Moreover, our results provide new advances in the epigenetic regulation of these miRs in HCC
