    Pressure induced magnetic phase separation in La0.75_{0.75}Ca0.25_{0.25}MnO3_{3} manganite

    The pressure dependence of the Curie temperature TC(P)_{C}(P) in La0.75_{0.75}Ca0.25_{0.25}MnO3_{3} was determined by neutron diffraction up to 8 GPa, and compared with the metallization temperature TIM(P)_{IM}(P) \cite{irprl}. The behavior of the two temperatures appears similar over the whole pressure range suggesting a key role of magnetic double exchange also in the pressure regime where the superexchange interaction is dominant. Coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic peaks at high pressure and low temperature indicates a phase separated regime which is well reproduced with a dynamical mean-field calculation for a simplified model. A new P-T phase diagram has been proposed on the basis of the whole set of experimental data.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Deep Saturated Free Electron Laser Oscillators and Frozen Spikes

    We analyze the behavior of Free Electron Laser (FEL) oscillators operating in the deep saturated regime and point out the formation of sub-peaks of the optical pulse. They are very stable configurations, having a width corresponding to a coherence length. We speculate on the physical mechanisms underlying their growth and attempt an identification with FEL mode locked structures associated with Super Modes. Their impact on the intra-cavity nonlinear harmonic generation is also discussed along with the possibility of exploiting them as cavity out-coupler.Comment: 28 page

    Ultrahigh brightness electron beams by plasma-based injectors for driving all-optical free-electron lasers

    We studied the generation of low emittance high current monoenergetic beams from plasma waves driven by ultrashort laser pulses, in view of achieving beam brightness of interest for free-electron laser (FEL) applications. The aim is to show the feasibility of generating nC charged beams carrying peak currents much higher than those attainable with photoinjectors, together with comparable emittances and energy spread, compatibly with typical FEL requirements. We identified two regimes: the first is based on a laser wakefield acceleration plasma driving scheme on a gas jet modulated in areas of different densities with sharp density gradients. The second regime is the so-called bubble regime, leaving a full electron-free zone behind the driving laser pulse: with this technique peak currents in excess of 100 kA are achievable. We have focused on the first regime, because it seems more promising in terms of beam emittance. Simulations carried out using VORPAL show, in fact, that in the first regime, using a properly density modulated gas jet, it is possible to generate beams at energies of about 30 MeV with peak currents of 20 kA, slice transverse emittances as low as 0.3 mm mrad, and energy spread around 0.4%. These beams break the barrier of 10^{18}  A/(mm mrad)^{2} in brightness, a value definitely above the ultimate performances of photoinjectors, therefore opening a new range of opportunities for FEL applications. A few examples of FELs driven by such kind of beams injected into laser undulators are finally shown. The system constituted by the electron beam under the effect of the electromagnetic undulator has been named AOFEL (for all optical free-electron laser)

    Apparent superluminal advancement of a single photon far beyond its coherence length

    We present experimental results relative to superluminal propagation based on a single photon traversing an optical system, called 4f-system, which acts singularly on the photon's spectral component phases. A single photon is created by a CW laser light down{conversion process. The introduction of a linear spectral phase function will lead to the shift of the photon peak far beyond the coherence length of the photon itself (an apparent superluminal propagation of the photon). Superluminal group velocity detection is done by interferometric measurement of the temporal shifted photon with its correlated untouched reference. The observed superluminal photon propagation complies with causality. The operation of the optical system allows to enlighten the origin of the apparent superluminal photon velocity. The experiment foresees a superluminal effect with single photon wavepackets.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

    Inspections of accredited workshops: Some Italian experiences

    Among the activities established by the Directive 128/09 and by NAP (National Action Plan), a periodical inspection by authorities is addressed to official workshops in charge of sprayer inspections.In this paper we describe activities carried out by two Italian regions (Umbria and Campania) that have recently started a regular activity for the inspection of workshops. An inspection procedure according to technical national guidelines (ENAMA documents) was prepared in collaboration with regional authorities and CRA-ING, that is in charge of technical aspects of inspections. The approach, the key elements and some results of inspections are reported in the paper

    The influence of the brittle-ductile transition zone on aftershock and foreshock occurrence

    Aftershock occurrence is characterized by scaling behaviors with quite universal exponents. At the same time, deviations from universality have been proposed as a tool to discriminate aftershocks from foreshocks. Here we show that the change in rheological behavior of the crust, from velocity weakening to velocity strengthening, represents a viable mechanism to explain statistical features of both aftershocks and foreshocks. More precisely, we present a model of the seismic fault described as a velocity weakening elastic layer coupled to a velocity strengthening visco-elastic layer. We show that the statistical properties of aftershocks in instrumental catalogs are recovered at a quantitative level, quite independently of the value of model parameters. We also find that large earthquakes are often anticipated by a preparatory phase characterized by the occurrence of foreshocks. Their magnitude distribution is significantly flatter than the aftershock one, in agreement with recent results for forecasting tools based on foreshocks

    The case of the particular kind of jewellery with coins made by the XIX century Castellani manufactory from Rome, is the reason why a program of data elaboration has been implemented, to manage a quantity of written informations (archives and figurative and technical descriptions) together with images: five different sheets are needed to join all the main elements. On this basis, an analogous database can be developed to investigate texts such as the XVI century manuscript by Pirro Ligorio, where coins are used to write an historical prosopography illustrting, by means of drawings, the history of the old most famous men of the Roman Republic. However, the coins are not always reproduced wrightly or the same coin is used on different occasions: a program like this can detect these cases. Computer analysis together with the traditional humanistic research will achieve, on an historical basis, remarkable results
