Sub-surface alteration and related change in reflectance spectra of space-weathered materials

Context. Airless planetary bodies are studied mainly by remote sensing methods. Reflectance spectroscopy is often used to derive their compositions. One of the main complications for the interpretation of reflectance spectra is surface alteration by space weathering caused by irradiation by solar wind and micrometeoroid particles. Aims. We aim to evaluate the damage to the samples from H+ and laser irradiation and relate it to the observed alteration in the spectra. Methods. We used olivine (OL) and pyroxene (OPX) pellets irradiated by 5 keV H+ ions and individual femtosecond laser pulses and measured their visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) spectra. We observed the pellets with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. We studied structural, mineralogical, and chemical modifications in the samples. Finally, we connected the material observations to changes in the reflectance spectra. Results. In both minerals, H+ irradiation induces partially amorphous sub-surface layers containing small vesicles. In OL pellets, these vesicles are more tightly packed than in OPX ones. Any related spectral change is mainly in the VIS spectral slope. Changes due to laser irradiation are mostly dependent on the material's melting temperature. Of all the samples, only the laser-irradiated OL contains nanophase Fe particles, which induce detectable spectral slope change throughout the measured spectral range. Our results suggest that spectral changes at VIS-NIR wavelengths are mainly dependent on the thickness of (partially) amorphous sub-surface layers. Furthermore, amorphisation smooths micro-roughness, increasing the contribution of volume scattering and absorption over surface scattering. Conclusions. Soon after exposure to the space environment, the appearance of partially amorphous sub-surface layers results in rapid changes in the VIS spectral slope. In later stages (onset of micrometeoroid bombardment), we expect an emergence of nanoparticles to also mildly affect the NIR spectral slope. An increase in the dimensions of amorphous layers and vesicles in the more space-weathered material will only cause band-depth variation and darkening.Peer reviewe

Plasmon-plasmon interaction and the role of buffer in epitaxial graphene micro-flakes

We investigate the origin of the translational symmetry breaking in epitaxially grown single-layer graphene. Despite the surface morphology of homogeneous graphene films influenced by the presence of mutually parallel SiC surface terraces, the far-infrared magneto-plasmon absorption is almost independent of the angle between the probing light polarization and the orientation of terraces. Based on a detailed analysis of the plasmon absorption lineshape and its behavior in the magnetic field, supported by confocal Raman mapping and atomic force microscopy, we explain this discrepancy by spontaneously formed graphene micro flakes. We further support our conclusions using data collected on artificially created graphene nanoribbons: we recognize similar plasmon origin in artificial ribbons and naturally formed grains. An unexpectedly large plasmon resonance redshift was observed in nanoribbons. In a hydrogen-intercalated sample (which does not contain the buffer), this redshift is quantitatively taken into account by a plasmon-plasmon interaction. In non-intercalated samples featuring a buffer layer, this redshift is due to an interplay between the plasmon-plasmon coupling and Coulomb screening by the buffer-induced interface states. Electromagnetic compatibility of the PWR control system

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou elektromagnetické kompatibility řídícího systému regulace výkonu reaktoru typu PWR. Práce obsahuje teoretický úvod do problematiky EMC od jejího vzniku, druhů rušivých signálů a vazeb, po měření a způsoby ochrany zařízení. Dále se věnuje obecnému popisu principu řízení jaderného reaktoru. Praktická část práce je zaměřena na charakteristiku vybraného řídícího systému a návrh zkoušek elektromagnetické kompatibility dle platných norem ČSN EN. Elektromagnetická kompatibilita byla otestována na kvalifikačním stendu, který byl pro tento řídící systém vyroben. Vybrané zkoušky jsou v praktické části blíže popsány a vyhodnoceny.ObhájenoThe master thesis deals with electromagnetic compatibility of PWR reactor control rod system. The thesis contains theoretical introduction to EMC from its origin, types of disturbing signals and couplings, to measurements and methods of device protection. It also deals with the general description of principle of controlling nuclear reactor. The practical part of the thesis is focused on the characteristics of the selected control rod system and the suggestion of electromagnetic compatibility tests according to valid ČSN EN standards. Electromagnetic compatibility was tested on the qualifying stand that was made for this control rod system. Selected tests are described and evaluated in the practical part
