Reconstructing the electron in a fractionalized quantum fluid
The low energy physics of the fractional Hall liquid is described in terms
quasiparticles that are qualitatively distinct from electrons. We show,
however, that a long-lived electron-like quasiparticle also exists in the
excitation spectrum: the state obtained by the application of an electron
creation operator to a fractional quantum Hall ground state has a non-zero
overlap with a complex, high energy bound state containing an odd number of
composite-fermion quasiparticles. The electron annihilation operator similarly
couples to a bound complex of composite-fermion holes. We predict that these
bound states can be observed through a conductance resonance in experiments
involving a tunneling of an external electron into the fractional quantum Hall
liquid. A comment is made on the origin of the breakdown of the Fermi liquid

Decomposition Algorithms for Analyzing Transient Phenomena in Multi-class Queueing Networks in Air Transportation
In a previous paper (Peterson, Bertsimas, and Odoni 1992), we studied the phenomenon of transient congestion in landings at a hub airport and developed a recursive approach for computing moments of queue lengths and waiting times. In this paper we extend our approach to a network, developing two approximations based on the method used for the single hub. We present computational results for a simple 2-hub network and indicate the usefulness of the approach in analyzing the interaction between hubs. Although our motivation is drawn from air transportation, our method is applicable to all multi-class queuing networks where service capacity at a station may be modeled as a Markov or semi-Markov process. Our method represents a new approach for analyzing transient congestion phenomena in such networks. Airport congestion and delay have grown significantly over the last decade. By 1986 ground delays at domestic airports averaged 2000 hours per day, the equivalent of grounding the entire fleet of Delta Airlines at that tillie (250 aircraft) for one day (Donoghue 1986). In 1990, 21 airports in the U.S. exceeded 20, 000 hours of delay, with 12 more projected to exceed this total by 1997 (National Transportation Research Board 1991). An Examination of Computer Forensics and Related Certifications In The Accounting Curriculum
Forensic accounting has been a fast-growing niche area within the accounting field for many years. While there has been dramatic growth in the number of courses and degrees in forensic accounting offered by universities, certain relevant topics receive little coverage, such as computer forensics. The purpose of this paper is to examine the views of accounting academics and practitioners pertaining to integrating computer forensics in the accounting curriculum, as well as to determine which forensic accounting certifications the respondents hold. Differences in opinions between the two groups are discussed, along with recommendations on how to improve the forensic accounting curriculum pertaining to computer forensics education
Stochastic Feature Selection with Distributed Feature Spacing for Hyperspectral Data
Feature subset selection is a well studied problem in machine learning. One short-coming of many methods is the selection of highly correlated features; a characteristic of hyperspectral data. A novel stochastic feature selection method with three major components is presented. First, we present an optimized feature selection method that maximizes a heuristic using a simulated annealing search which increases the chance of avoiding locally optimum solutions. Second, we exploit local cross correlation pair-wise amongst classes of interest to select suitable features for class discrimination. Third, we adopt the concept of distributed spacing from the multi-objective optimization community to distribute features across the spectrum in order to select less correlated features. The classification performance of our semi-embedded feature selection and classification method is demonstrated on a 12-class textile hyperspectral classification problem under several noise realizations. These results are compared with a variety of feature selection methods that cover a broad range of approaches. Abstract © IEE
Radio Properties of Low Redshift Broad Line Active Galactic Nuclei
The question as to whether the distribution of radio-loudness in active
galactic nuclei (AGN) is actually bimodal has been discussed extensively in the
literature. Futhermore, there have been claims that radio-loudness depends on
black hole mass and Eddington ratio. We investigate these claims using the low
redshift broad line AGN sample of Greene & Ho (2007), which consists of 8434
objects at z < 0.35 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Fourth Data Release (SDSS
DR4). We obtained radio fluxes from the Very Large Array Faint Images of the
Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey for the SDSS AGN. Out of the
8434 SDSS AGN, 821 have corresponding observed radio fluxes in the FIRST
survey. We calculated the radio-loudness parameter (R) for all objects above
the FIRST detection limit (1 mJy), and an upper limit to R for the undetected
objects. Using these data, the question of radio bimodality is investigated for
different subsets of the total sample. We find no clear demarcation between the
radio-loud (RL, R > 10) and radio-quiet (RQ, R < 10) objects, but instead fill
in a more radio-intermediate population in a continuous fashion for all
subsamples. We find that 4.7% of the AGN in the flux-limited subsample are RL
based on core radio emission alone. We calculate the radio-loud fraction (RLF)
as both a function of black hole mass and Eddington ratio. The RLF decreases
(from 13% to 2%) as Eddington ratio increases over 2.5 order of magnitude. The
RLF is nearly constant (~5%) over 4 decades in black hole mass, except for an
increase at masses greater than 10^8 solar masses. We find for the FIRST
detected subsample that 367 of the RL AGN have black hole masses less than 10^8
solar masses, a large enough number to indicate that RL AGN are not a product
of only the most massive black holes in the local universe.Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, accepted to A
Equilibration through local information exchange in networks
We study the equilibrium states of energy functions involving a large set of
real variables, defined on the links of sparsely connected networks, and
interacting at the network nodes, using the cavity and replica methods. When
applied to the representative problem of network resource allocation, an
efficient distributed algorithm is devised, with simulations showing full
agreement with theory. Scaling properties with the network connectivity and the
