    Guidance document on fat reduction factor, functional barrier concept, phthalates and primary aromatic amines

    Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 of 14 January 2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food contains four issues for which food inspectors and enforcement laboratories need further guidance. These issues are the concept of the fat reduction factor and the functional barrier, and the restrictions for certain phthalates and primary aromatic amines. The Regulation applies from 1 May 2011. The network of the European Union Reference Laboratory and the National Reference Laboratories for food contact materials created a Task Force in order to give guidance on these issues.JRC.I.1-Chemical Assessment and Testin

    Prevalence of Rheumatoid Arthritis in the Southern Part of Denmark

    The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis in the southern part of Denmark. Using a screening questionnaire, telephone interview, register data, and a clinical examination cases were ascertained from a random sample of 4995 individuals over the age of 15. As case definition we used the original and modified 1987 American College of Rheumatology classification criteria. The overall point prevalence was 0.26% (95% confidence interval: 0.13-0.39) in the total sample and 0.35% (95% confidence interval: 0.17-0.52) among the responders; the cumulative prevalence was 0.75% (95% confidence interval: 0.52-0.97) in the total sample and 0.92% (95% confidence interval: 0.62-1.21) among the responders

    What Is an L-Cell and How Do We Study the Secretory Mechanisms of the L-Cell?

    Synthetic glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues are effective anti-obesity and anti-diabetes drugs. The beneficial actions of GLP-1 go far beyond insulin secretion and appetite, and include cardiovascular benefits and possibly also beneficial effects in neurodegenerative diseases. Considerable reserves of GLP-1 are stored in intestinal endocrine cells that potentially might be mobilized by pharmacological means to improve the body’s metabolic state. In recognition of this, the interest in understanding basic L-cell physiology and the mechanisms controlling GLP-1 secretion, has increased considerably. With a view to home in on what an L-cell is, we here present an overview of available data on L-cell development, L-cell peptide expression profiles, peptide production and secretory patterns of L-cells from different parts of the gut. We conclude that L-cells differ markedly depending on their anatomical location, and that the traditional definition of L-cells as a homogeneous population of cells that only produce GLP-1, GLP-2, glicentin and oxyntomodulin is no longer tenable. We suggest to sub-classify L-cells based on their differential peptide contents as well as their differential expression of nutrient sensors, which ultimately determine the secretory responses to different stimuli. A second purpose of this review is to describe and discuss the most frequently used experimental models for functional L-cell studies, highlighting their benefits and limitations. We conclude that no experimental model is perfect and that a comprehensive understanding must be built on results from a combination of models

    We construct a hierarchy of supersymmetric string theories by showing that the general N-extended superstrings may be viewed as a special class of the (N+1)-extended superstrings.     Maximization of Regional probabilities using Optimal Surface Graphs: Application to Carotid Artery Segmentation in MRI

    __Purpose__ We present a segmentation method that maximizes regional probabilities enclosed by coupled surfaces using an Optimal Surface Graph (OSG) cut approach. This OSG cut determines the globally optimal solution given a graph constructed around an initial surface. While most methods for vessel wall segmentation only use edge information, we show that maximizing regional probabilities using an OSG improves the segmentation results. We applied this to automatically segment the vessel wall of the carotid artery in magnetic resonance images. __Methods__ First, voxel-wise regional probability maps were obtained using a Support Vector Machine classifier trained on local image features. Then the OSG segments the regions which maximizes the regional probabilities considering smoothness and topological constraints. __Results__ The method was evaluated on 49 carotid arteries from 30 subjects. The proposed method shows good accuracy with a Dice wall overlap of 74:1%+-4:3%, and significantly outperforms a published method based on an OSG using only surface information, the obtained segmentations using voxel-wise classification alone, and another published artery wall segmentation method based on a deformable surface model. Intra-class correlations (ICC) with manually measured lumen and wall volumes were similar to those obtained between observers. Finally, we show a good reproducibility of the method with ICC = 0:86 between the volumes measured in scans repeated within a short time interval. __Conclusions__ In this work a new segmentation method that uses both an OSG and regional probabilities is presented. The method shows good segmentations of the carotid artery in MRI and outperformed another segmentation method that uses OSG and edge information and the voxel-wise segmentation using the probability maps

    Efficiency of a gyroscopic device for conversion of mechanical wave energy to electrical energy:Technical report from ESGI-83 workshop in industrial mathematics 2011

    We consider a recently proposed gyroscopic device for conversion of mechanical ocean wave energy to electrical energy. Two models of the device derived from standard engineering mechanics from the literature are analysed, and a model is derived from analytical mechanics considerations. From these models, estimates of the power production, efficiency, forces and moments are made. We find that it is possible to extract a significant amount of energy from an ocean wave using the described device.     concrete: Targeted Estimation of Survival and Competing Risks in Continuous Time

    This article introduces the R package concrete, which implements a recently developed targeted maximum likelihood estimator (TMLE) for the cause-specific absolute risks of time-to-event outcomes measured in continuous time. Cross-validated Super Learner machine learning ensembles are used to estimate propensity scores and conditional cause-specific hazards, which are then targeted to produce robust and efficient plug-in estimates of the effects of static or dynamic interventions on a binary treatment given at baseline quantified as risk differences or risk ratios. Influence curve-based asymptotic inference is provided for TMLE estimates and simultaneous confidence bands can be computed for target estimands spanning multiple multiple times or events. In this paper we review the one-step continuous-time TMLE methodology as it is situated in an overarching causal inference workflow, describe its implementation, and demonstrate the use of the package on the PBC dataset.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, submitted to the R Journa
