The effects of bedrest on crew performance during simulated shuttle reentry. Volume 2: Control task performance

    Get PDF
A simplified space shuttle reentry simulation performed on the NASA Ames Research Center Centrifuge is described. Anticipating potentially deleterious effects of physiological deconditioning from orbital living (simulated here by 10 days of enforced bedrest) upon a shuttle pilot's ability to manually control his aircraft (should that be necessary in an emergency) a comprehensive battery of measurements was made roughly every 1/2 minute on eight military pilot subjects, over two 20-minute reentry Gz vs. time profiles, one peaking at 2 Gz and the other at 3 Gz. Alternate runs were made without and with g-suits to test the help or interference offered by such protective devices to manual control performance. A very demanding two-axis control task was employed, with a subcritical instability in the pitch axis to force a high attentional demand and a severe loss-of-control penalty. The results show that pilots experienced in high Gz flying can easily handle the shuttle manual control task during 2 Gz or 3 Gz reentry profiles, provided the degree of physiological deconditioning is no more than induced by these 10 days of enforced bedrest

Avalanche Behavior in an Absorbing State Oslo Model

Self-organized criticality can be translated into the language of absorbing state phase transitions. Most models for which this analogy is established have been investigated for their absorbing state characteristics. In this article, we transform the self-organized critical Oslo model into an absorbing state Oslo model and analyze the avalanche behavior. We find that the resulting gap exponent, D, is consistent with its value in the self-organized critical model. For the avalanche size exponent, \tau, an analysis of the effect of the external drive and the boundary conditions is required.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, REVTeX 4, submitted to PRE Brief Reports; added reference and some extra information in V

Hingeless helicopter rotor with improved stability

    Get PDF
Improved stability was provided in a hingeless helicopter rotor by inclining the principal elastic flexural axes and coupling pitching of the rotor blade with the lead-lag bending of the blade. The primary elastic flex axes were inclined by constructing the blade of materials that display non-uniform stiffness, and the specification described various cross section distributions and the resulting inclined flex axes. Arrangements for varying the pitch of the rotor blade in a predetermined relationship with lead-lag bending of the blade, i.e., bending of the blade in a plane parallel to its plane of rotation were constructed

    Characterizations of linear sufficient statistics

    Get PDF
A surjective bounded linear operator T from a Banach space X to a Banach space Y must be a sufficient statistic for a dominated family of probability measures defined on the Borel sets of X. These results were applied, so that they characterize linear sufficient statistics for families of the exponential type, including as special cases the Wishart and multivariate normal distributions. The latter result was used to establish precisely which procedures for sampling from a normal population had the property that the sample mean was a sufficient statistic

Influence of diesel surrogates on the behavior of simplified spray models

    Get PDF
Numerous experimental investigations make use of diesel surrogates to make the computational time reasonable. In the few studies where measured (surrogate and real diesel) and computed (surrogate only) results have been compared, the selection methodology for the surrogate constituent compounds and the measures taken to validate the chemical kinetic models are not discussed, and the range of operating conditions used is often small. Additionally, most simplified models use tuning variables to fit model results to measurements. This work makes the comparison between some frequently used diesel surrogates using a simple 1D vaporizing spray model, with the spray cone angle as the tuning parameter. Results show that liquid length and fuel fraction strongly depend on the physical properties of the used fuel for a fixed spray angle. These parameters are important for modeling auto-ignition and pollutant formation. The spray angle is varied till the spray length is the same for each surrogate. Results show important differences between other spray parameters such as local mixture fraction and axial velocity

NONDESTRUCTIVE TEST OF CARBON BEDS FOR REACTOR CONTAINMENT APPLICATIONS. Progress Report, June 1962-December 1963

A nondestructive technique was developed for evaluating carbon beds used in reactor containment applications. Freon-12 was used as a tracer to detect leak paths that would reduce the efficiency of carbon beds for removal of radioactive I/sub 2/ vapor. Leaks greater than 0.008% of the tothl flow were detected with an electron-capture-type instrument. The current method is suitable for testing dry carbon beds prior to field installation and at air velocities up to 20 ft/min. (auth

    Two-band ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model for local-moment half-metals

We introduce a two-band Kondo-lattice model to describe ferromagnetic half-metals with local magnetic moments. In a model study, the electronic and magnetic properties are presented by temperature dependent magnetization curves, band-structures, spin polarizations and plasma frequencies. These are obtained from numerically evaluated equations, based on the single-electron Green functions. We show that the mutual influence between the itinerant electrons and the local magnetic moments is responsible for several phase transitions of the half-metals, namely first and second order magnetic phase transitions, as well as half-metal to semiconductor and half-metal to semimetal transitions.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics: Condensed Matte
