    The importance of Lifestyle entrepreneurship: A conceptual study of the tourism industry

    The purpose of the paper is to explore and discuss the emergence of lifestyle entrepreneurship. The article addresses the question of the relationship between entrepreneur’s life quality and enterprise growth. The purpose is to conceptualize this relationship and to learn more about lifestyle entrepreneurship. Tourism serves as a case industry to illustrate both relevant research in the field of lifestyle entrepreneurship and a conceptual framework to examine the relationship between entrepreneurial activities and perceived life quality. The paper delivers a literature review on entrepreneurship and certain forms of entrepreneurship and conceptualizes lifestyle enterprise’s growth.

    Revascularization with BYCROSS atherectomy device - protocol of a prospective multicenter observational study

    Background The BYCROSSℱ device is a novel device intended for use in atherectomy of the peripheral arterial disease (PAD). With the BYCROSSℱ atherectomy system, also prolonged calcifying lesions can be treated in a minimally invasive manner, which was previously reserved for bypass surgery. The aim of this study is to collect additional clinical data on safety and performance of the BYCROSSℱ from patients undergoing revascularization of severely stenotic or occluded peripheral arterial vessels with the BYCROSSℱ. Methods and design This is an investigator-initiated national prospective multicenter observational study in patients with PAD. Sixty patients (20 per center) with PAD with stenosis higher than 80% or complete occlusion (de novo or recurrent stenosis) of vessels below the aortic bifurcation (min 3 mm vessel diameter) will be recruited. Three vascular surgery centers are participating in the study. The primary efficacy endpoint is procedural success, defined as passage of the occlusion through the BYCROSS device, and safety outcomes, explicated as freedom from device-related serious adverse events (SADEs). Secondary endpoints include primary and secondary patency rates, change in Rutherford classification, and freedom from amputation at 3 and 12 months. Discussion The BYCROSS atherectomy system may be a novel device for the minimally invasive treatment of prolonged calcified lesions previously reserved for bypass surgery. This national prospective multicenter observational study could represent another step in demonstrating the efficancy and safety of this device for treatment of PAD

    Precise implications for real-space pair distribution function modeling of effects intrinsic to modern time-of-flight neutron diffractometers

    Total scattering and pair distribution function (PDF) methods allow for detailed study of local atomic order and disorder, including materials for which Rietveld refinements are not traditionally possible (amorphous materials, liquids, glasses and nanoparticles). With the advent of modern neutron time-of-flight (TOF) instrumentation, total scattering studies are capable of producing PDFs with ranges upwards of 100–200 Å, covering the correlation length scales of interest for many materials under study. Despite this, the refinement and subsequent analysis of data are often limited by confounding factors that are not rigorously accounted for in conventional analysis programs. While many of these artifacts are known and recognized by experts in the field, their effects and any associated mitigation strategies largely exist as passed-down `tribal' knowledge in the community, and have not been concisely demonstrated and compared in a unified presentation. This article aims to explicitly demonstrate, through reviews of previous literature, simulated analysis and real-world case studies, the effects of resolution, binning, bounds, peak shape, peak asymmetry, inconsistent conversion of TOF to d spacing and merging of multiple banks in neutron TOF data as they directly relate to real-space PDF analysis. Suggestions for best practice in analysis of data from modern neutron TOF total scattering instruments when using conventional analysis programs are made, as well as recommendations for improved analysis methods and future instrument design

    Vitamin D depletion aggravates hypertension and target-organ damage

    BACKGROUND: We tested the controversial hypothesis that vitamin D depletion aggravates hypertension and target-organ damage by influencing renin. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four-week-old double-transgenic rats (dTGR) with excess angiotensin (Ang) II production due to overexpression of the human renin (hREN) and angiotensinogen (hAGT) genes received vitamin D-depleted (n=18) or standard chow (n=15) for 3 weeks. The depleted group had very low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (mean+/-SEM; 3.8+/-0.29 versus 40.6+/-1.19 nmol/L) and had higher mean systolic BP at week 5 (158+/-3.5 versus 134.6+/-3.7 mm Hg, P<0.001), week 6 (176.6+/-3.3 versus 162.3+/-3.8 mm Hg, P<0.01), and week 7 (171.6+/-5.1 versus 155.9+/-4.3 mm Hg, P<0.05). Vitamin D depletion led to increased relative heart weights and increased serum creatinine concentrations. Furthermore, the mRNAs of natriuretic peptides, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, hREN, and rRen were increased by vitamin D depletion. Regulatory T cells in the spleen and in the circulation were not affected. Ang metabolites, including Ang II and the counter-regulatory breakdown product Ang 1 to 7, were significantly up-regulated in the vitamin D-depleted groups, while ACE-1 and ACE-2 activities were not affected. CONCLUSIONS: Short-term severe vitamin D depletion aggravated hypertension and target-organ damage in dTGR. Our data suggest that even short-term severe vitamin D deficiency may directly promote hypertension and impacts on renin-angiotensin system components that could contribute to target-organ damage. The findings add to the evidence that vitamin D deficiency could also affect human hypertension

    Risk factors associated with poor pain outcomes following primary knee replacement surgery: analysis of data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, Hospital Episode Statistics and Patient Reported Outcomes as part of the STAR research programme

    OBJECTIVE: Identify risk factors for poor pain outcomes six months after primary knee replacement surgery. METHODS: Observational cohort study on patients receiving primary knee replacement from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, Hospital Episode Statistics and Patient Reported Outcomes. A wide range of variables routinely collected in primary and secondary care were identified as potential predictors of worsening or only minor improvement in pain, based on the Oxford Knee Score pain subscale. Results are presented as relative risk ratios and adjusted risk differences (ARD) by fitting a generalized linear model with a binomial error structure and log link function. RESULTS: Information was available for 4,750 patients from 2009 to 2016, with a mean age of 69, of whom 56.1% were female. 10.4% of patients had poor pain outcomes. The strongest effects were seen for pre-operative factors: mild knee pain symptoms at the time of surgery (ARD 18.2% (95% Confidence Interval 13.6, 22.8), smoking 12.0% (95% CI:7.3, 16.6), living in the most deprived areas 5.6% (95% CI:2.3, 9.0) and obesity class II 6.3% (95% CI:3.0, 9.7). Important risk factors with more moderate effects included a history of previous knee arthroscopy surgery 4.6% (95% CI:2.5, 6.6), and use of opioids 3.4% (95% CI:1.4, 5.3) within three months after surgery. Those patients with worsening pain state change had more complications by 3 months (11.8% among those in a worse pain state vs. 2.7% with the same pain state). CONCLUSIONS: We quantified the relative importance of individual risk factors including mild pre-operative pain, smoking, deprivation, obesity and opioid use in terms of the absolute proportions of patients achieving poor pain outcomes. These findings will support development of interventions to reduce the numbers of patients who have poor pain outcomes

    Low-energy Calibration of XENON1T with an Internal 37^{37}Ar Source

    A low-energy electronic recoil calibration of XENON1T, a dual-phase xenontime projection chamber, with an internal 37^{37}Ar source was performed. Thiscalibration source features a 35-day half-life and provides two mono-energeticlines at 2.82 keV and 0.27 keV. The photon yield and electron yield at 2.82 keVare measured to be (32.3±\pm0.3) photons/keV and (40.6±\pm0.5) electrons/keV,respectively, in agreement with other measurements and with NEST predictions.The electron yield at 0.27 keV is also measured and it is(68.0−3.7+6.3^{+6.3}_{-3.7}) electrons/keV. The 37^{37}Ar calibration confirms thatthe detector is well-understood in the energy region close to the detectionthreshold, with the 2.82 keV line reconstructed at (2.83±\pm0.02) keV, whichfurther validates the model used to interpret the low-energy electronic recoilexcess previously reported by XENON1T. The ability to efficiently remove argonwith cryogenic distillation after the calibration proves that 37^{37}Ar can beconsidered as a regular calibration source for multi-tonne xenon detectors.<br

    The Triggerless Data Acquisition System of the XENONnT Experiment

    The XENONnT detector uses the latest and largest liquid xenon-based timeprojection chamber (TPC) operated by the XENON Collaboration, aimed atdetecting Weakly Interacting Massive Particles and conducting other rare eventsearches. The XENONnT data acquisition (DAQ) system constitutes an upgraded andexpanded version of the XENON1T DAQ system. For its operation, it reliespredominantly on commercially available hardware accompanied by open-source andcustom-developed software. The three constituent subsystems of the XENONnTdetector, the TPC (main detector), muon veto, and the newly introduced neutronveto, are integrated into a single DAQ, and can be operated both independentlyand as a unified system. In total, the DAQ digitizes the signals of 698photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), of which 253 from the top PMT array of the TPCare digitized twice, at ×10\times10 and ×0.5\times0.5 gain. The DAQ for the mostpart is a triggerless system, reading out and storing every signal that exceedsthe digitization thresholds. Custom-developed software is used to process theacquired data, making it available within O(10 s)\mathcal{O}\left(10\text{ s}\right)for live data quality monitoring and online analyses. The entire system withall the three subsystems was successfully commissioned and has been operatingcontinuously, comfortably withstanding readout rates that exceed ∌500\sim500 MB/sduring calibration. Livetime during normal operation exceeds 99%99\% and is∌90%\sim90\% during most high-rate calibrations. The combined DAQ system hascollected more than 2 PB of both calibration and science data during thecommissioning of XENONnT and the first science run.<br
