“Breaking the Law...?” On the Role of Law and Legal References in the Cultural History of the Heavy Metal Scene in Styria since 1980

Die kulturgeschichtliche Perspektive fragt danach, welche Rolle das Recht als Alltagsphänomen im Leben der Menschen spielte. Ein solcher Bereich, in welchem man eine zentrale Stellung des Rechts wahrscheinlich auf den ersten Blick nicht vermuten würde, ist das Szene-Leben in der Subkultur des Heavy Metal. Und doch ist Metal seit seiner Frühzeit von einem bestimmten Rechtsverständnis geprägt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Rolle das Recht und der Rechtsbezug in der Kulturgeschichte der Metal-Szene in Graz und der Steiermark seit 1980 spielten. Auf den Ebenen der alltäglichen sozialen Realität, der soziokulturellen Imagination (etwa auf Band-T-Shirts, Flyern, Plattencovers etc.) sowie der Musik selbst nahm das Rechtsthema starken Einfluss auf die Ausbildung der spezifischen Identität und Werte der steirischen Metal-Community.The cultural-historical perspective asks what role law played as an everyday phenomenon in people’s lives. One such area in which one would probably not suspect a central position of law at first glance is the scene life in the subculture of heavy metal. And yet metal has been characterized by a certain understanding of law since its early days. This article explores the question of what role law and references to law have played in the cultural history of the metal scene in Graz and Styria since 1980. On the levels of everyday social reality, socio-cultural imagination (for example on band T-shirts, flyers, record covers etc.) as well as the music itself, the topic of law had a strong influence on the formation of the specific identity and values of the Styrian metal community

Quantum Spin Dimers from Chiral Dissipation in Cold-Atom Chains

We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics of a driven dissipative spin chain with chiral coupling to a 1D bosonic bath, and its atomic implementation with a two-species mixture of cold quantum gases. The reservoir is represented by a spin-orbit coupled 1D quasi-condensate of atoms in a magnetized phase, while the spins are identified with motional states of a separate species of atoms in an optical lattice. The chirality of reservoir excitations allows the spins to couple differently to left and right moving modes, which in our atomic setup can be tuned from bidirectional to purely unidirectional. Remarkably, this leads to a pure steady state in which pairs of neighboring spins form dimers that decouple from the remainder of the chain. Our results also apply to current experiments with two-level emitters coupled to photonic waveguides.Comment: Replaced by published version (6 pages + 8 pages supplemental material

Delayed Coherent Quantum Feedback from a Scattering Theory and a Matrix Product State Perspective

We study the scattering of photons propagating in a semi-infinite waveguide terminated by a mirror and interacting with a quantum emitter. This paradigm constitutes an example of coherent quantum feedback, where light emitted towards the mirror gets redirected back to the emitter. We derive an analytical solution for the scattering of two-photon states, which is based on an exact resummation of the perturbative expansion of the scattering matrix, in a regime where the time delay of the coherent feedback is comparable to the timescale of the quantum emitter's dynamics. We compare the results with numerical simulations based on matrix product state techniques simulating the full dynamics of the system, and extend the study to the scattering of coherent states beyond the low-power limit.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figure

Measurement Protocol for the Entanglement Spectrum of Cold Atoms

Entanglement, and, in particular the entanglement spectrum, plays a major role in characterizing many-body quantum systems. While there has been a surge of theoretical works on the subject, no experimental measurement has been performed to date because of the lack of an implementable measurement scheme. Here, we propose a measurement protocol to access the entanglement spectrum of many-body states in experiments with cold atoms in optical lattices. Our scheme effectively performs a Ramsey spectroscopy of the entanglement Hamiltonian and is based on the ability to produce several copies of the state under investigation together with the possibility to perform a global swap gate between two copies conditioned on the state of an auxiliary qubit. We show how the required conditional swap gate can be implemented with cold atoms, either by using Rydberg interactions or coupling the atoms to a cavity mode. We illustrate these ideas on a simple (extended) Bose-Hubbard model where such a measurement protocol reveals topological features of the Haldane phase

Thermal Conductivity of Liquid Metals

Over the last decades, many experimental methods have been developed and improved to measure thermophysical properties of matter. This chapter gives an overview over the most common techniques to obtain thermal conductivity λ as a function of temperature T. These methods can be divided into steady state and transient methods. At the Institute of Experimental Physics at Graz University of Technology, an ohmic pulse-heating apparatus was installed in the 1980s, and has been further improved over the years, which allows the investigation of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity for the end of the solid phase and especially for the liquid phase of metals and alloys. This apparatus will be described in more detail. To determine thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity with the ohmic pulse-heating method, the Wiedemann-Franz law is used. There are electronic as well as lattice contributions to thermal conductivity. As the materials examined at Graz University of Technology, are mostly in the liquid phase, the lattice contribution to thermal conductivity is negligibly small in most cases. Uncertainties for thermal conductivity for aluminum have been estimated ±6% in the solid phase and ±5% in the liquid phase

Thermal vs. Entanglement Entropy: A Measurement Protocol for Fermionic Atoms with a Quantum Gas Microscope

We show how to measure the order-two Renyi entropy of many-body states of spinful fermionic atoms in an optical lattice in equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations. The proposed scheme relies on the possibility to produce and couple two copies of the state under investigation, and to measure the occupation number in a site- and spin-resolved manner, e.g. with a quantum gas microscope. Such a protocol opens the possibility to measure entanglement and test a number of theoretical predictions, such as area laws and their corrections. As an illustration we discuss the interplay between thermal and entanglement entropy for a one dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model at finite temperature, and its possible measurement in an experiment using the present scheme

Isochromosome 12p formation regulates vitamin D metabolism in testicular cancer

Isochromosome 12p (iChr12p) is typical in almost all invasive testicular cancers. Increased copy number of genes on 12p is associated with the development of a clinically manifest tumor; however, the causative genes have not yet been identified. Chromosome 12 harbors many genes involved in Vitamin D metabolism. RNAseq analysis of Vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes from the TCGA cohort revealed that clustering of VDR expression signatures could differentiate between pure seminomas and non-seminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT). Using TCGA mRNA expression of anabolic (CYP2R1, CYP27A1 and CYP27B1) and catabolic (CYP24A1) Vitamin D enzymes, positive (PTHLH, IFNG, and TNF) and negative (FGF23) feedback regulators could also clearly distinguish between pure seminomas and NSGCT. We hypothesize that the regulation of Vitamin D metabolism might be disturbed through iChr12p formation, influencing testicular carcinogenesis via increased FGF23 and PTHLH expression. While FGF23 represses CYP27B1 and activates catabolism of active hormone, increased PTHLH secretion can lead to hypercalcemia via inactivation of VDR. In conclusion, testicular cancer is associated with extensive modifications in intratesticular Vitamin D homeostasis. Further research is needed to clarify whether Vitamin D deficiency causes the formation of iChr12p and whether Vitamin D deficiency via iChr12p genomic aberration is involved in testicular carcinogenesis

Thoughts about the EURO

Das Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit ist es, dem Leser einen Überblick über die einschlägige Literatur der letzten zehn Jahre, welche sich mit der europäischen Einheitswährung, dem Euro, beschäftigt, zu verschaffen. Der Zeitraum von 1997 bis 2006 schien mir angemessen, da sowohl die Einigung auf den Wachstums- und Stabilitätspakt als auch die Festlegung der Maastricht Kriterien und die Einführung des Euro als Buchgeld 1999 und als Bargeld 2002 in diese Zeitspanne fällt. Des Weiteren ermöglicht dieser Zeitraum die Beobachtung der Jahre kurz vor der Einführung des Euro, die Zeit der Einführung selbst und die Beobachtung der ersten Jahre mit der neuen Währung. Nachdem die Kapitel eins und zwei einen Abstract und die Einführung in die Arbeit beinhalten, werden in Kapitel drei und seinen Unterkapiteln Artikel aus der Fachliteratur bearbeitet und es wird versucht, dem Leser einen Eindruck der Sichtweisen den Euro betreffend von beiden Seiten des Atlantischen Ozeans aus zu vermitteln. Politische Themen die mit einer derart weitgreifenden Änderung im Europäischen Wirtschaftsraum wie der Einführung einer gemeinsamen Währung einhergehen werden im Kapitel vier untersucht. Die politischen Aspekte und ihre Verknüpfung und Auswirkung auf Ökonomische Bereiche werden ebenso besprochen wie die Notwendigkeit von politischen Entscheidungsträgern wirtschaftliche Vorteile wie die Freihandelszone ohne Wechselkursrisken gegen politische Nachteile wie die Aufgabe der souveränen Wechselkurspolitik an eine übergeordnete Stelle abzuwägen. Die Stärkung des Gemeinschaftssinnes durch eine einheitliche Währung ist außerdem als positiver Effekt anzumerken. Die Europäische Zentralbank, ihre Strukturen und geldpolitische Ziele werden ebenfalls in der Arbeit betrachtet. Auch werden die schwierigen ersten Jahre der Währungsunion und die Beziehungen der europäischen Zentralbank zur ihrem amerikanischen Pendant, der Federal Reserve, genauer unter die Lupe genommen. Den Abschluss der Arbeit bilden Gedanken und Reflektionen über die Erscheinung der Wechselkursentwicklungen. Es werden verschiedenste Ansätze in der Theorie besprochen, und zwei simple Beispiele der Beziehung des Euro/Dollar Wechselkurses in Relation zu Leistungsbilanzen bzw. zu Refinanzierungszinssätzen runden das Kapitel ab. Auf Grund des momentanen Informationsstandes besagt der allgemeine Grundtenor zurzeit, dass die Annahme, dass Wechselkursentwicklungen weithingehend einem Zufallsprinzip folgen nicht völlig ausgeschlossen werden kann.This diploma thesis is meant to provide an overview of the literature on the common European currency, the Euro in the time span from 1997 to 2006. The choice for this decade came because of the fact that the events of fixing the Stability and Growth Pact of the European Union as well as the implementation of the Maastricht criteria, the introduction of the Euro as a virtual currency in 1999 and Euro cash in 2002 all took place in the observed years. Thus the years just before the start, the start itself and the first years with the new currency were examined in this paper. While chapters one and two are and abstract and the introduction, chapter three and its subchapters are strictly dedicated to the issue of reviewing the literature and try to give an understanding of both the European and the American view on the Euro. Chapter four broadly deals with the political issues that come along with the change in the European economic area. The decisions of policymakers are of tremendous importance when taking such a big step. These steps come alongside the economical ones when creating a monetary union. The trade off between the benefits of a common trade area and the loss of the powerful instrument of the sovereign national monetary policy and the symbolic value of a common currency that were supposed to stimulate the citizens of the EU to develop a more sophisticated sense of community were the most challenging issues that policy makers of EMU countries had to deal with. The European Central Bank, its structures and goals in monetary policy are dealt with in this paper as well as the possibilities of the ECB to achieve its goals and the troubled first years of EMU. The leading role of the US Federal and the role of the ECB as a follower of the trends in interest rate movements are also highlighted and supported by numerous articles. Another big issue, especially in the most recent past, is the phenomenon of exchange rate movements. This paper provides information on the different views of looking at exchange rates and focuses mainly on the Euro/Dollar relationship. I treat the most common ways of measuring and predicting exchange rate movements and present two simple models that fit in the big picture – they are significant and, in part, indicate a certain trend but one can not really draw meaningful conclusions in terms of predicting future movements from them. The literature of the articles that concentrate on exchange rate movements leads to the conclusion that the theory of exchange rate movements being close to random walks cannot be rejected

Acht Geschichten über die Integrationsgeschichte

European integration represents a historically unprecedented and new form of a continent's peaceful unification. Therefore, historiography needs innovative theoretical concepts to illustrate this process appropriately; at the present moment, however, integration history is only characterized by an extensive 'theoretical deficit'. The book project 'Acht Geschichten über die Integrationsgeschichte. Zur Grundlegung der Geschichte der europäischen Integration als ein episodisches historiographisches Erzählen' critically adopts this opinion and illuminates the theoretical principles of integration historiography. A proposal regarding the theoretical principles of unification historiography is compiled from an interdisciplinary perspective. The concept of the episodic historiographic narrative (Peter Pichler) understands the unification of Europe as a comprehensive cooperation and transformation process in which various historic strands (e.g. political, economic, cultural, social, legal, religious, etc.) interlink with each other. Therefore it would be most sensible to show their totality as an episodic historiographic network within the historiographic context. This theoretical proposal shall be provided for research as a new meta-perspective and methodical tool. In a first step, the hitherto existing research on integration history is critically reviewed. Furthermore, its discourse will be analysed. Particular attention is paid to include Eastern and Southern European as well as Turkish perspectives. Their synopsis shows the interplay between the Eastern and Southern European 'transition'-narrative and the Turkish perspective on the integration process as the driving force of the debate. Furthermore, 'post-modern' perspectives on integration history represent an important feature of the discourse's acceleration and renewal. The first step ends with the contributors being able to give a first innovative impulse to the discursive renewal of research concerning integration history; the neoterised term 'transnarrative competence' allows for correlation between 'transition'-narrative and Turkish perspectives on integration. In a second step, those theoretical features from recent developments in integration and historical theory are isolated that can contribute to a perspective renewal of research. The concept of the episodic historiographic narrative proposes an interdisciplinary theory based on those elements of political, social, legal and cultural sciences. The analytical narrative mindset of each element is determined and thus reconstructed as one episodic plot line, one episode of European integration history. The net of episodes eventually constitutes the proposed theory of an episodic historiographic narrative. Thus, the concept of the episodic historiographic narrative does not only enable histrorians to overcome the deficit in the theory of integration historiography but also enters new academic ground by uniting interdisciplinary elements to an episodic network.Die europäische Integration stellt eine historisch präzedenzlose und neuartige Form der friedlichen Vereinigung eines Kontinents dar. Die Geschichtswissenschaft benötigt daher innovative theoretische Konzepte, um diesen Prozess angemessen erklären zu können - zum gegenwärtigen Zeitpunkt ist die Integrationsgeschichte jedoch durch ein weitgehendes "Theoriedefizit" geprägt. Das Buchprojekt "Acht Geschichten über die Integrationsgeschichte. Zur Grundlegung der Geschichte der europäischen Integration als ein episodisches historiographisches Erzählen" nimmt diesen Befund kritisch auf und leuchtet die theoretischen Grundlagen der Integrationshistoriographie aus. In interdisziplinärer Perspektive wird ein Vorschlag zur theoretischen Grundlegung der Vereinigungshistoriographie erarbeitet. Das Konzept eines episodischen historiographischen Erzählens (Peter Pichler) begreift die Einigung Europas als einen umfassenden Kooperations- und Transformationsprozess. In diesem Prozess greifen verschiedenste geschichtliche Teilstränge (etwa politische, wirtschaftliche, kulturelle, soziale, rechtliche, religiöse usw.) netzwerkartig ineinander. Im historiographischen Text ist deren Gesamtes daher am sinnvollsten als ein episodisches historiographisches Netzwerk zu repräsentieren. Dieser Theorievorschlag soll als neue Metaperspektive und methodisches Arbeitsinstrument zu Verfügung gestellt werden. Ein erster Arbeitsschritt unterzieht die bisherige Forschung zur Integrationsgeschichte einer kritischen Bestandsaufnahme und Diskursanalyse. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt darauf, auch ost- und südosteuropäische sowie türkische Perspektiven miteinzubeziehen. In der Synopsis zeigt sich das Zusammenspiel von ost- und südosteuropäischem "transition"-Narrativ sowie der türkischen Perspektive auf den Integrationsprozess als Motor der Debatte. Weiters stellen "postmoderne" Perspektiven auf die Integrationsgeschichte ein wichtiges Element der Beschleunigung und Erneuerung des Diskurses dar. Der erste Arbeitsschritt endet damit, einen ersten Innovationsimpuls zur diskursiven Erneuerung der integrationsgeschichtlichen Forschung geben zu können: Der neu eingeführte Begriff der "transnarrativen Kompetenz" ermöglicht es, "transition"-Narrativ und türkische Integrationsperspektiven aufeinander zu beziehen. In einem zweiten Arbeitsschritt werden aus der jüngsten Entwicklung in Integrations- und Geschichtstheorie jene theoretischen Elemente isoliert, die zu einer perspektivischen Erneuerung der Forschung beitragen können. Das Konzept des episodischen historiographischen Erzählens verbindet diese Bausteine aus Politik-, Sozial-, Rechts- und Kulturwissenschaften zu einem interdisziplinären Theorievorschlag. Die Bausteine werden in ihrer jeweiligen analytischen Erzählhaltung bestimmt und somit als jeweils ein episodischer Erzählstrang, als eine Episode der Geschichte der europäischen Integration rekonstruiert. Das Netzwerk dieser Episoden macht schließlich den Theorievorschlag eines episodischen historiographischen Erzählens aus. Das Konzept des episodischen historiographischen Erzählens ermöglicht somit nicht nur die Überwindung des Theoriedefizits der Integrationsgeschichtsschreibung, sondern dringt mittels der Vereinigung interdisziplinärer Bausteine zu einem episodischen Netzwerk tief in wissenschaftliches Neuland vor
