The purpose of this thesis is to identify the current status of contemporary Anglo-French defence cooperation and consider its relevance to British defence policy. To do so it provides an overview of both existing literature on Anglo-French relations and the historical background of the relationship. It also considers several international relations theories which are relevant to the relationship. To further its analysis it considers three case studies, those being the Lancaster House Treaty, the 2011 intervention in Libya and Brexit. The thesis concludes that defence cooperation with France is of vital importance to the UK, but the relationship has been imperilled by Brexit

A Framework for Mobile Applications based on a structured P2P Overlay

P2P applications are increasingly popular. Unlike traditional client-server applications they do not require central server resources. This makes them less costly to host and maintain. While there have been a large number of P2P applications been developed for PC based systems, there are only very few for mobile appliances, such as mobile phones or networked PDAs, and even fewer which operate successfully on the public mobile data network (GPRS, 3G), rather than WiFi. This is largely due to the difficulties posed by the restrictive data access to mobile devices (NATs, Firewalls by the network operators) and traditionally high charges for data communications. Recently, the latter point has been virtually removed by the introduction of flat-rate data packages by the operators. Statistics of polarization dependent loss in an installed long-haul WDM system.

We have made continual, multiple-day measurements of the polarization dependent loss of multiple C-band channels in an installed 1800 km terrestrial link. The PDLs of individual channels varied on the time-scale of hours, while the temporal variations of the PDLs of adjacent channels often tracked. The probability densities of the field measurements of PDL were not Maxwellian and instead were truncated, consistent with the limited number of elements in the link having appreciable PDL. A new model for the statistics of PDL in systems with few PDL elements is proposed, where a lower bound of the distribution exists if there is a dominant PDL element.
