    Die TrĂĽmmereisenerze von Damme (Grube Damme und benachbarte Vorkommen) : mit 4 Tabellen

    Bei Damme, Gehrde und Rieste, 30 km nordöstlich von Osnabrück, kommt ein marin-sedimentäres, stratiformes Eisenerzlager vor, das aus Brauneisenerz-Geröllen und mergelig-glaukonitischer Matrix besteht und meist 2-7 m mächtig ist. Dieses Erzlager tritt in fünf unterschiedlich großen, linsenförmigen Zonen auf, die in 70-400 m Tiefe unter Gelände auf den flach einfallenden Flügeln einer 35 km langen und 10km breiten Oberkreide-Mulde liegen. Es gehört stratigraphisch dem Oberen Unter-Campan an und transgrediert auf tonige Gesteine der Unterkreide. In seinem Hangenden liegen Sedimentgesteine des Ober-Campan, Tertiär und Quartär. Das Erzlager entstand als marine Seife durch Abtragung, Umlagerung und Oxidation von Siderit-Konkretionen aus den tonigen Gesteinen der Unterkreide im Liegenden und in der Umgebung des Erzvorkommens. Von 1944-1967 ist das Erzlager in der jetzt auflässigen Grube Damme abgebaut worden. Dort erzeugte man aus Roherz mit 30-32 % Fe und 0,6-0,7% P durch naßmechanische Aufbereitung ein Konzentrat (versandfertiges Produkt) mit 46-47 % Fe und 0,8% P, das im Ruhrgebiet verhüttet wurde. Insgesamt wurden rund 9,2 Mio. t Roherz gefördert und 5,1 Mio. t Konzentrat erzeugt. Die Grube Damme ist aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen stillgelegt worden. Das Erz ist gegenwärtig nicht abbauwürdig. Deshalb sind die Erzvorräte noch nicht vollständig erkundet

    Locally optimal unstructured finite element meshes in 3 dimensions

    This paper investigates the adaptive finite element solution of a general class of variational problems in three dimensions using a combination of node movement, edge swapping, face swapping and node insertion. The adaptive strategy proposed is a generalization of previous work in two dimensions and is based upon the construction of a hierarchy of locally optimal meshes. Results presented, both for a single equation and a system of coupled equations, suggest that this approach is able to produce better meshes of tetrahedra than those obtained by more conventional adaptive strategies and in a relatively efficient manner

    SynKB: Semantic Search for Synthetic Procedures

    In this paper we present SynKB, an open-source, automatically extracted knowledge base of chemical synthesis protocols. Similar to proprietary chemistry databases such as Reaxsys, SynKB allows chemists to retrieve structured knowledge about synthetic procedures. By taking advantage of recent advances in natural language processing for procedural texts, SynKB supports more flexible queries about reaction conditions, and thus has the potential to help chemists search the literature for conditions used in relevant reactions as they design new synthetic routes. Using customized Transformer models to automatically extract information from 6 million synthesis procedures described in U.S. and EU patents, we show that for many queries, SynKB has higher recall than Reaxsys, while maintaining high precision. We plan to make SynKB available as an open-source tool; in contrast, proprietary chemistry databases require costly subscriptions.Comment: Accepted to EMNLP 2022 Demo trac

    Multicarrier communication over underwater acoustic channels with nonuniform Doppler shifts

The definitive version was published in IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering 33 (2008): 198-209, doi:10.1109/JOE.2008.920471.Underwater acoustic (UWA) channels are wideband in nature due to the small ratio of the carrier frequency to the signal bandwidth, which introduces frequency-dependent Doppler shifts. In this paper, we treat the channel as having a common Doppler scaling factor on all propagation paths, and propose a two-step approach to mitigating the Doppler effect: 1) nonuniform Doppler compensation via resampling that converts a "wideband" problem into a "narrowband" problem and 2) high-resolution uniform compensation of the residual Doppler. We focus on zero-padded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to minimize the transmission power. Null subcarriers are used to facilitate Doppler compensation, and pilot subcarriers are used for channel estimation. The receiver is based on block-by-block processing, and does not rely on channel dependence across OFDM blocks; thus, it is suitable for fast-varying UWA channels. The data from two shallow-water experiments near Woods Hole, MA, are used to demonstrate the receiver performance. Excellent performance results are obtained even when the transmitter and the receiver are moving at a relative speed of up to 10 kn, at which the Doppler shifts are greater than the OFDM subcarrier spacing. These results suggest that OFDM is a viable option for high-rate communications over wideband UWA channels with nonuniform Doppler shifts.B. Li and S.     Early growth of field-grown swiss flint maize landraces

    Mild cold stress (chilling) limits early growth of maize (Zea mays L.) in central and northern Europe. Introgression of chilling tolerance from landraces has been proposed, because the genetic basis for chilling tolerance of European Flint x Dent hybrids is small. Therefore, the aim of this study was a detailed characterization of the chilling toler¬ance of Swiss maize landraces, hypothesizing a relatively good performance in marginal thermal environments. The environments were set up by different sowing dates in two years. A functional growth analysis of the shoot from the one-leaf to the six-leaf stage was conducted with eight Swiss landraces and a check hybrid (Magister). The mean air temperature calculated across the six environments was above 15°C. Under these conditions, none of the landraces grew consistently better than Magister. Some landrace-specific relative growth reactions were observed compared to Magister, apparently due to strong changes in the temperature course. However, based on this study direct use of Swiss maize landraces in breeding for the improvement of chilling tolerance is not recom¬mended. More detailed investigations of promising landraces are proposed

    Immunohistochemical investigations and introduction of new therapeutic strategies in scleromyxoedema: Case report

    BACKGROUND: Scleromyxoedema is a rare chronic skin disease of obscure origin, which may often be associated with severe internal co-morbidity. Even though different casuistic treatment modalities have been described, to date, curing still seems to be impossible. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 44-year-old Caucasian female presenting with remarkable circumscribed, erythematous to skin-coloured, indurated skin eruptions at the forehead, arms, shoulders, legs and the gluteal region. Routine histology and Alcian blue labelling confirmed a massive deposition of acid mucopolysaccharides. Immunohistochemical investigations revealed proliferating fibroblasts and a discrete lymphocytic infiltration as well as increased dermal expression of MIB-1(+ )and anti-mastcell-tryptase(+ )cells. Bone marrow biopsies confirmed a monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance without morphological characteristics of plasmocytoma; immunofixation unveiled the presence of IgG-kappa paraproteins. CONCLUSIONS: Taking all data into account, our patient exhibited a complex form of lichen mxyoedematosus, which could most likely be linked a variant of scleromyxoedema. Experimental treatment with methotrexate resulted in a stabilisation of clinical symptoms but no improvement after five months of therapy. A subsequent therapeutic attempt by the use of medium-dose ultraviolet A1 cold-light photomonotherapy led to a further stabilisation of clinical symptoms, but could not induce a sustained amelioration of skin condition
