    Programming language Formian.

Formex algebra is a powerful tool for the generation of data used in the design and analysis of space structures. However, for the algebra to be of practical use, it is necessary to have a means of employing the concepts on a computer. This is the particular problem which this thesis addresses. The solution proposed here is Formian, an interactive programming language, which being modelled on formex algebra allows complex configurations to be generated from a few concise and yet readily understood statements. Formian is designed to allow problems of data generation to be tackled in a single programming environment. The thesis describes the raison d'etre for the Formian programming language and the steps taken to create the language and to provide a practical and reliable implementation in the form of a computer program. A complete description of the language structure is given. This includes an overview of formex algebra. The use of Formian from a designer's viewpoint is provided by interspersing the description with practical examples

Fertility Preservation for Cancer Patients: A Review

    Get PDF
Infertility can arise as a consequence of treatment of oncological conditions. The parallel and continued improvement in both the management of oncology and fertility cases in recent times has brought to the fore-front the potential for fertility preservation in patients being treated for cancer. Oncologists must be aware of situations where their treatment will affect fertility in patients who are being treated for cancer and they must also be aware of the pathways available for procedures such as cryopreservation of gametes and/or embryos. Improved cancer care associated with increased cure rates and long term survival, coupled with advances in fertility treatment means that it is now imperative that fertility preservation is considered as part of the care offered to these patients. This can only be approached within a multidisciplinary setting. There are obvious challenges that still remain to be resolved, especially in the area of fertility preservation in prepubertal patients. These include ethical issues, such as valid consent and research in the area of tissue retrieval, cryopreservation, and transplantation

Seattle Center Economic and Conceptual Development Study Phase 1 Report and Executive Summary - Draft

The City of Seattle retained Walt Disney Imagineering, Inc. and Harrison Price Company, a Joint Venture, to prepare a master conceptual and economic development plan for Seattle Center. The six-month work program was initiated in December 1987 and encompassed a thorough examination of the physical condition, structural and use characteristics, and financial performance of Seattle Center buildings and grounds, both individually and collectively. It is emphasized that this new study is not simply an update of earlier planning work conducted over the past few years. Rather the scope and depth of this work program transcends these earlier efforts and formulates, for the first time, a comprehensive master plan for the future growth and development of Seattle Center

A new global fAPAR and LAI dataset derived from optimal albedo estimates: comparison with MODIS products

    Get PDF
We present the first comparison between new fAPAR and LAI products derived from the GlobAlbedo dataset and the widely-used MODIS fAPAR and LAI and products. The GlobAlbedo derived products are produced using a 1D two-stream radiative transfer (RT) scheme designed explicitly for global parameter retrieval from albedo, with consistency between RT model assumptions and observations, as well as with typical large-scale land surface model RT schemes. The approach does not require biome-specific structural assumptions (e.g. cover, clumping, understory), unlike more detailed 3D RT model approaches. GlobAlbedo-derived values of fAPAR and LAI are compared with MODIS values over 2002-2011 at multiple flux tower sites within selected biomes, over 1200 × 1200 km regions and globally. GlobAlbedo-derived fAPAR and LAI values are temporally more stable than the MODIS values due to (1) the smoothness of the underlying albedo, derived via optimal estimation (assimilation) using an a priori estimate of albedo derived from an albedo ‘climatology’ (composited multi-year albedo observations) and (2) space-time invariant prior information in the inversion of the two-stream RT scheme. Parameters agree closely in timing but with GlobAlbedo values consistently lower than MODIS, particularly for LAI. Larger differences occur in winter (when values are lower) and in the Southern hemisphere. Globally, we find that: GlobAlbedo-derived fAPAR is ~0.9- 1.01 × MODIS fAPAR with an offset of ~0.03; GlobAlbedo-derived LAI is ~0.6 × MODIS LAI with an offset of ~0.2. Differences arise due to the RT model assumptions underlying the products, meaning care is required in interpreting either set of values, particularly when comparing to finescale ground-based estimates. We present global calibrations between GlobAlbedo-derived and MODIS products.JRC.H.5-Land Resources Managemen

21-cm synthesis observations of VIRGOHI 21 - a possible dark galaxy in the Virgo Cluster

Many observations indicate that dark matter dominates the extra-galactic Universe, yet no totally dark structure of galactic proportions has ever been convincingly identified. Previously we have suggested that VIRGOHI 21, a 21-cm source we found in the Virgo Cluster using Jodrell Bank, was a possible dark galaxy because of its broad line-width (~200 km/s) unaccompanied by any visible gravitational source to account for it. We have now imaged VIRGOHI 21 in the neutral-hydrogen line and find what could be a dark, edge-on, spinning disk with the mass and diameter of a typical spiral galaxy. Moreover, VIRGOHI 21 has unquestionably been involved in an interaction with NGC 4254, a luminous spiral with an odd one-armed morphology, but lacking the massive interactor normally linked with such a feature. Numerical models of NGC 4254 call for a close interaction ~10^8 years ago with a perturber of ~10^11 solar masses. This we take as additional evidence for the massive nature of VIRGOHI 21 as there does not appear to be any other viable candidate. We have also used the Hubble Space Telescope to search for stars associated with the HI and find none down to an I band surface brightness limit of 31.1 +/- 0.2 mag/sq. arcsec.Comment: 8 pages, accepted to ApJ, uses emulateapj.cls. Atrial fibrillation in hemodialysis patients: clinical features and associations with anticoagulant therapy

Using data from the international Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS), we determined incidence, prevalence, and outcomes among hemodialysis patients with atrial fibrillation. Cox proportional hazards models, to identify associations with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation and clinical outcomes, were stratified by country and study phase and adjusted for descriptive characteristics and comorbidities. Of 17,513 randomly sampled patients, 2188 had preexisting atrial fibrillation, with wide variation in prevalence across countries. Advanced age, non-black race, higher facility mean dialysate calcium, prosthetic heart valves, and valvular heart disease were associated with higher risk of new atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation at study enrollment was positively associated with all-cause mortality and stroke. The CHADS2 score identified approximately equal-size groups of hemodialysis patients with atrial fibrillation with low (less than 2) and higher risk (more than 4) for subsequent strokes on a per 100 patient-year basis. Among patients with atrial fibrillation, warfarin use was associated with a significantly higher stroke risk, particularly in those over 75 years of age. Our study shows that atrial fibrillation is common and associated with elevated risk of adverse clinical outcomes, and this risk is even higher among elderly patients prescribed warfarin. The effectiveness and safety of warfarin in hemodialysis patients require additional investigation

The Seattle Center Economic and Conceptual Development Study is divided into three phases, of which the present second phase addresses three alternative redevelopment concepts for the site together with associated attendance estimates and where applicable, facility sizing guidelines. Pictorial and narrative descriptions of the three concept options have been submitted under separate cover; this companion document contains the attendance and sizing estimates pertinent to the three plans. This study includes an introduction, summary text, and accompanying tables highlight the principal findings and conclusions, while the detailed analysis, including supporting documentation, is presented as a statistical appendix
